not looking for recommendations over $50, i’m on a budget. i saw this one is normally 80 and was reduced by half so i figure its probably a pretty good filter but i wanted to check with people here
i already have a 50 gallon sponge filter and a 30 gallon sponge filter running on this tank, i just wanted to get a HOB too because the sponges don’t pick up particle debris.
my little albino guy is having a hard time finding food before my normal senegal does since he’s mostly blind. i also struggle to tong feed because i almost never see him come out of hiding for more than a brief second to swim by (too many hides in the tank, heavily planted) and then straight back to where i can’t reach him again.
so i moved him to a 20 long where i can always reach him to tong feed. just gonna keep him here until he gets a bit bigger, he’s about half an inch shorter than my normal senegal already, which i find concerning since ive only had them for about 3 weeks and they were the same size when i got them.
let me know what yall think about this. i could also set up a larger pond (27gal tub, 33 gal aquarium or 40 gal tub) but id have to cycle it first and i had this 20 gal already cycled and empty of fish so i used this.
also, how big of a water change weekly? i know what to do in a properly sized tank, but with a tank much smaller than what’s recommended for this species i dont know if i may need to do larger or smaller water changes.

will my baby choke or eventually wear it down into smaller pieces? idk but i’m scared i just accidentally hurt them
i already did a 40% water change yesterday, (was overdue) but the tank constantly has this
need a good shelf for my 3 20 longs, but i also want to make sure i dont have 60 gallons of water on the floor
so i know very little about cichlids. i know they’re aggressive and territorial especially when mating, i know they can only be kept with certain fish depending on species due to aggression, and that they like digging through sand and some eat plants, but thats about it. i know a 29 gallon is pretty small, but it’s what i have to work with and if it doesn’t work out, that’s okay. i’ll do something else with it.
im starting up a new cycle in my 29 gallon and i would like to make it a cichlid tank.(filter and heater not added yet) i plan to let the cycle run for at least a month before i consider fish to let the plants and cycle mature. (i also plan to add multiple more sweet potatoes to grow out of the top because they grow reeeally well and i think they’d do a great job filtering the water)
firstly, just a curiosity, is a 29 gallon big enough for a traditional cichlid tank where people overstock it with cichlids to reduce aggression? if not, completely fine. i was more so considering just getting a pair anyway.
IF i can go that route, i would like some recommendations on cichlids that can live together in an overstocked 29 gallon.
if i cant do that, i would like some recommendations for an interactive cichlid species that i can keep as a pair in a tank of that size, OR a recommendation for a cichlid species that can live as a pair with 8 gold barbs as dither fish in the tank with them. i can keep the gold barbs out if necessary though.

just got him today. i don’t have a scale to weigh him unfortunately but that is a medium dubia roach for scale i guess😭i should’ve put a quarter next to him but i was scared of spooking him

i finally had one be super full of eggs and i took a pic of her one night and then the next morning i found her dead at the surface💔i think maybe she had trouble laying them or something ill put a pic of her in the comments if anyone knows
i know quartz are safe but i’m unfamiliar with what crystals are actually in this pile and i’d like to have “colored gravel” that is actually safe for fish
cups are food safe, purchased from walmart. i want to use them as caves. the glass paperweight was found at an antique vendor market, not sure how old it is or how to know if the glass is safe
