Bad vet experience. Do I give it another chance or go elsewhere?

Bad vet experience. Do I give it another chance or go elsewhere?

Hey everybody, long-ish post coming up.

I’ve had my gecko, Otis, for a few years now. Up until a year or so ago, we were unaware he needed a multivitamin with vitamin A, and were just giving him calcium with and without D3. Around that time, he developed minor impacted hemipenes.

The vet recommended we soak him several times a week and come back so they could manually express the hemipenes. We came back several times, and they weren’t able to extract them. They let us know that since it didn’t seem to be bothering him, it wasn’t a problem and we could leave it be (looking back, this is red flag number one)

Jumping forward to last Saturday (4 days ago), I took him out of his tank and noticed his hemipenes looked much larger, and were red. We immediately called the vet and were told we were safe to wait until Wednesday (today), which was the soonest they could fit him in.

We take him in today and the vet tech begins asking us about his tank size, temperature, how often we feed him, etc. We tell her Otis’s basking spot is around 93°F, his warm-side ambient temp is in the upper 80s, and the cool side ambient is room temp (lower 70s). She immediately tells us that these temperatures are way too hot for him, which I didn’t think sounded right, but I made a note of it.

She then asked how often we fed him, to which we said once a week. She proceeded to tell me that leopard geckos can eat EVERY DAY, which I immediately knew was wrong. But I smiled and nodded along. She then proceeded to tell me he’s overweight, which seemed to contradict the previous advice, but sure.

Finally, the actual vet comes in, and it’s a vet we’ve never seen at previous visits. She lets us know the treatment game plan is to start feeding him everyday so the “larger stools” will force out the blockage? I immediately think this doesn’t sound right, as we were expecting him to be anesthetized and have the impaction manually removed. They then take him to a different room to ‘clean the wound’.

After 20 minutes or so, they come back looking worried. They let us know they tried to extract the impaction with no anesthesia, but couldn’t proceed because he was bleeding and screaming. Me and my gf are both shocked that they even tried to do this, as it wasn’t discussed with us and seemed needlessly cruel. They then let us know that they need to anesthetize him and remove the impaction right this minute, which is what we were hoping for and expecting.

We picked him up a few hours later with some antibiotics and a follow-up in a week. I’m feeling really frustrated and not at all confident in this situation. I go home and google the info the vet tech gave us, and find out that our temps are fine and that adult leopard geckos typically eat 1-2 times a week.

I honestly have lost all confidence in this office after this situation, from the false information to the cruel removal attempt. Am I overreacting? Should I go to the follow-up and find a new vet afterwards? Or should I try to find a new vet to do the follow-up itself?

Thanks for reading and any input.

Just picked these two up from a horrible situation

These two were posted on Facebook yesterday and it happened to pop up in my feed and I just had to do something. I already own two leos so I'm familiar with their care but this is my first gecko rescue. They were in that 20 gal tall fish tank together. Obviously one wasn't doing well competing for food. The guy said they're about 2 years old. The skinny one looks like a baby from stunted growth. I have them separated now and on paper towels for the time being. I plan on getting them to the vet as soon as possible. I hope I can get them healthy. I wasn't planning on getting more geckos so I only have one spare 40 gal enclosure, I'll have to use a smaller one for a little while until I can get it upgraded. They're safe now though and will get all the care they need.

What we think about this terrarium remodel? :D

Was a rescue I got in February. After having him on paper towels and treating him of a nasty hemipene impaction at the vet I was confident he was good and built him this terrarium set up! 40 gallon, has a 30-70 sand dirt mix, carved foam rocks, fake plants (can’t seem to keep real plant alive), and got and sanitized rocks and bark from my local forests. First terrarium build I’ve done myself and I’m quite happy with it, and so is Charles :]💜

He’s the sweetest boy ever, I wish I had the room in my living space for a bigger terrarium for him so he can live the true high life.

MY PRECIOUS BABY/ questions

Alr guys I got this lil baby cake that I named Sonny back in April. The last 2 pics are him when I rescued him, and the rest are pics that show his tail, weight, and just cute pics lol. Basically I was working for Pet Supplies Plus (0/10 WORST JOB FOR PPL WHO CARE ABOUT ANIMALS) and he was being cohabbed. Sadly, his tail was ripped off by the other baby at the time, so I purchased this lil boy for $30, and my coworker took home the other lil guy 😭 I fed him as much as he wanted everyday, and good god can this lil baby eat.
But the reason I’m posting is I’m wondering if he looks old enough and big enough to feed once a week? I’m feeding him every few days now (dubias XL mealworms, large crickets) , but I think I made him a lil too fat trying to compensate for his tail 😭 so ye ,
Also what do yall think of his regrowth? In my opinion his tail looks so amazing now and I’m so proud of him :,)

Cricket shortage

I'm not sure if other people are dealing with this but there is a massive cricket shortage in my city. I am currently taking care of my younger brother's leopard gecko. He left the city for a few months and we aren't able to have regular contact. I was curious if you guys can help.

I normally feed his adult leopard gecko between 16 to 24 crickets a week, but because of the shortage I have been feeding the leo just meal worms. I was curious about how often, and many meal worms I should be feeding her. I also wanna know about how many dubia roaches I should give (I haven't bought any yet but I am curious about them).

People at my pet store are guessing it might be another month before crickets go back to normal. I would really appreciate any guidance on how often and what I can feed.

Thank you so much!!!!

Tips for bonding with my rescue?

Goose has been settling in great the last couple weeks but I don’t see him come out of his warm hide much besides to eat and bask, unless he’s just coming out after everyone goes to bed. He’s very curious about me and pokes his head out when I talk to him and doesn’t startle when I take the screen off, move things around, or put my hands in there (I know front opening is ideal but can’t be picky about a free tank). I’ve started laying my hand in there for him to get used to every day and he’ll come out and smell and lick, almost start to crawl onto my hand, and then realize I don’t have food and fully turn away from me 🤣 “You don’t have roaches or worms? I’m not interested.” I’d love to get him coming out voluntarily as he has MBD from former neglect and I don’t want to accidentally hurt him by picking him up. My experienced reptile friend that rehabbed him handled him a lot that way, though, and said he never seemed bothered and was really friendly and handleable.

How can I get him more comfortable and build a gentle handling relationship with him? I know handling should be more limited with MBD cases but I’d still like to be able to share that with him eventually, even if to a lesser extent.

Thanks everyone! My reptile experience so far is only with a ball python and he’s a sturdy guy so this is all very new to me!

I had no idea geckos were this clean! My husband 3D printed a tiny litter box for Mandarinka

When I first got my leopard gecko, Mandarinka, I had no clue they always use the exact same designated poop corner!
She used to always go on a piece of paper towel in that corner, which was already super convenient. But then my husband decided to 3D print a custom corner litter tray for her enclosure. We placed it right in her spot, and she immediately understood the assignment! Now she uses her little tray like a tiny cat🐱
Honestly, she’s basically a small, scaly cat at this point 🤣 Does anyone else’s gecko have a custom litter setup?

For anyone asking, here’s the link to the 3D model my husband printed:

Gecko x-rays

i took loki to the vet for some reasons unimportant to the post but he’s ok so no one needs to worry. BUT i got these x rays out of it (he’s all clear) and i think they deserve to be shared.

Has anyone body else had to buy a second water bowl because their gecko likes to lay it. Or is mine broken.

Is Todd the Destroyer overweight?

This is Todd the Destroyer. He lives in a 4ft x 4ft x 2ft bioactive tank. His food (dubia roches, Super worms, and isopods) live in the tank with him. He hunts all his own food when he wants. I have not had to add food in over a year. It just keeps cycling. I add water and vegetables from the kitchen for the bugs to eat and they are thriving. I also have a dish for calcium that he never seems to touch. Would change anything? Would you start feeding him yourself? Other than water it seems like a self sustained ecosystem at this point! What other info would you like to see on this post?

Also a pic of the flower that grew in his tank.

I’ve had Morax for almost 5 years now, she was my college pet!

I wonder what she thinks about… How many thoughts do you think go through her head a day…..
