One eye guy

This slimey salamander is missing an eye, not sure why! He needs a proper name that fits his… missing bits.

Specific Species ID?

A little guy I rescued. I know it's a mountain horned dragon of some type, but that's it. Any ideas on species or gender? He's currently in an enclosure that used to house my now passed veiled chameleon George(another rescue that I think died from old age), which is convenient since it seems like they have similar environment needs lol.

And no, although the timing is coincidental, I don't think its a reincarnation, because George hated us with the fury of a dying sun, lmao.

What part of reptile keeping did you underestimate before actually doing it?

When I first started looking seriously at reptile keeping, I noticed that a lot of things sound simple in care guides but become more complicated in real life.

Temperature, humidity, lighting, feeding, behavior, cleaning, seasonal changes, none of them are impossible, but they all require more consistency than beginners often expect.

For experienced keepers here, what part of reptile keeping did you underestimate before actually doing it?

Was it the daily routine, the environmental management, reading behavior, equipment reliability, or something else entirely?

My grandma’s text to me after attempting to hand feed my 3 reptiles while I was out of state

For context she is 78 and terrified of anything with scales.

EDIT: Thanks for all the love on this post 🥲🤍 I can’t keep up with responses very well, but I’ll be sure to read some of these comments to my slightly traumatized grandmother. For any newcomers there are some scattered photos of my little guys in the comments if you wanna see them.

Hi new here.

Just got a bearded dragon from my coworker. I have a 40 gal tank with a top that slides open. Looking for advise and people’s preferences. Never had a bearded dragon but had a lot of green anoles growing up and never had any problems.

Attached photos. We’re getting better stuff for him to climb just ordered it. This is day one of him being with us. He came from a 20 gal tank.
Also getting different sand this was what was available at the store. Better sand coming in the mail.

Any advise of types of sand? One or two lamps?
We currently have one 75w basking lamp uvb.
Are heating pads any good? The tank I got came with one but we havnt used it.
Brands of cleaner? Or just 50/50 white vinegar and water?

Any tips or hints would be great.
Thanks ✌🏼

Please Support a Great Local Reptile Shop in Columbus

I wanted to give a shoutout to DK Reptiles & Exotics (3408 E Main St, Columbus, OH).
I stopped by today, and the owner mentioned he’d recently been in a car accident that set him back. He also said he’s meeting with his landlord and isn’t sure what the future holds for the shop.
I’ve always appreciated having a local reptile store where you can get honest advice and see that the animals are genuinely cared for. It would be heartbreaking to lose another small business that’s been a resource for the reptile community.
If you’ve ever shopped at DK Reptiles & Exotics, consider stopping by to pick up feeders, supplies, or anything you’ve been meaning to buy. Even sharing your positive experiences in the comments could help bring more people through the door.
Small businesses like this depend on community support, and I hope we can show them some love during a difficult time. 🦎🐍❤️

Rest in peace, Lunchbox

Best photo I have of her. She passed quietly due to old age. I was originally going to bring her in for euthanasia as I was concerned, and this became quite the ordeal as I was caught between a place of wondering whether it was more humane to let her live her days at home, or try to net her for a vet visit as she’s always been skittish. I’d originally posted asking for opinions on this. She passed the day before I would bring her in. This happened well over a week ago but I needed time.

I placed her into the soil with her cleanup crew and recovered her bones. Any suggestions on what I can do or craft to honor her would be much loved.

Edit to add: I also removed the decor from her beautiful bioactive cube. I think I will allow it to cycle with some plants for now, but do not have the heart for another reptile. I do have a Leo who is healthy and happy in a 55gal.

What is this weird behavior ?

This is the second time I see him do this. It lasted 5 minutes, video was sped up. Its like he’s going in circles on his own body and I don’t understand why.

Reptile Breeding Game Update

Hi everyone. Some of you may remember a while back I posted about wanting to create a reptile breeding tycoon style game. I had quite a few people respond to that and absolutely love it which I will go back and respond to those people with updates. For those who didn't see that I am planning on making a tycoon style game where you go from a small bedroom breeder to someone like KINOVA etc. I will link my original post to look at.

However good news I have fully finished planning out the game in terms having a "MVP" prototype able to be running and made with stand in shapes as the characters and objects. My goal is to have a fully playable demo ready in 6-8 months (I wish I could work more on it but my schedule makes it tough).

My question is this... Would people dislike the game if I made it a pixel art style of 2D top down game (think of like stardew valley but I would want it more detailed) Or would people prefer it to be a cartoon style game but not pixel art orrrrrrrr to be a 3D game sort of like the million simulator games out there? 2D top down would allow me to build this game much much faster than 3D which is why I want to do that but if no one would be interested then I will take the time to make it 3D. Also if I can somehow make some money from a 2D version then maybe I can hire some people to make a 3D perfect version down the line. Please let me know your thoughts and if anyone is an artist (cartoon or pixel art) and are willing to help me make some assets please reach out!

It has been super fun making the GDD (game design document) and planning out all the features. I think this game will be addicting to play and will have a pokemon gotta catch them all sort of vibe where you could either just try and produce the craziest animals, hatch every combination possible, or even become a breeding empire.

See yall with the next update :)

First Snake: Hognose or Rainbow Boa?

I’m very interested in getting my first snake! I currently own a leopard gecko and 3 crested geckos. I’ve been looking at getting a hognose snake for a while, but today my expo experience made my feelings jumbled.

I held a beautiful male leucistic rainbow boa today and it was sooo lovely to hold. It wrapped around my wrist, nuzzled between my fingers and stayed in my hand politely still. Then afterwards I held a female taffy hognose snake from the same seller and it didn’t want to cling onto me (resisting), hissed and did a quick jolt at my hand. I gave it back to the vender after that because I’m not ready to get bit yet (I’m still a scared of getting bit even though I know it doesn’t hurt bad). The vender pretty much sold me on the rainbow boa. After that vender, I went to another and held a beautiful male tricolor hognose and it was much calmer but still very active. I was really wanting a tricolor snake but now rainbow boas have my attention!! (especially the one I held. dw I got contact info from both sellers)

After the first vender, I’m so conflicted with my thoughts about which one I should get! I want opinions from people who own these snake/have dealt with them!

I like the idea of a smaller and calmer snake. I want to be able to have it out and chill with me without having to worry about it escaping or falling off of me 24/7. I know gender can play a toll in their personalities and size so I was thinking about getting a male.

I’m open to other snake species, any tips/info, etc!!
ADVICE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

ALSO I’m still doing research about snakes!! I don’t plan on buying one until I am FULLY educated in the specific breed I want and when I have a proper tank setup!!

~

RANDOM QUESTION: What’s the difference between the Colombian, Brazilian, and Argentine rainbow boas??

(Pinterest photos are just there because snakes are so freaking pretty)

~

EDIT: Im starting to believe the seller with the “rainbow boa” actually had a rosy boa. I wish I got a picture of the snake but he was reallly tiny and vender said he had them for a couple of months now. ALSO he said that they are super easy to take care of and that they only get 3-4 feet long. I went with my cousin to the expo so he’s gonna talk to the guy about it. Praying it’s a rosy boa and the guy just labeled it wrong🤞

Bearded Dragon vs Blue-Tongued Skink?

So I've really wanted a beardie for the last couple of years, and have slowly but surely been getting the setup together over the last 3 months after moving to a larger place and finding someone to make me a custom 4x2x2 tank. But my partner has been really taken with blue-tongues recently, and the more I see of them, the more I like them. It seems their environmental and dietary needs are easier, and they generally seem just as social as beardies, if not more. I was wondering if those who have owned both could give me their opinions? I'll also say that I do own two cats, but any reptile I own would occupy a spare bedroom we have in our apartment after our roommate moves out. Obviously, I don't want ANY interaction between any reptile I own and my cats. I was wondering if (in a worst-case scenario) blue-tongues or beardies would have more of a stress reaction to a cat eyeing their enclosure than the other. I have owned a veiled chameleon and a leopard gecko with my family, so I do have some experience with reptiles, just not beardies or blue tongues. Thank you in advance <3

Why are snake racks used for breeding?

I am in no way a reptile expert nor do I own snakes at the moment (I hope to someday). But I thoroughly enjoy watching ball python and Boa clutch hatchings and seeing all of the different morphs and beautiful colors the snakes can create.

Though, I’ve noticed that almost every person that breeds them has their female snakes in these rack shelves where they lay their eggs in a box like enclosure. I am just curious and would like to know if this is a temporary thing for the mother snakes to lay their eggs or if they stay there full time. I would also like to know if keeping the females in standard pet enclosures (like a 4*2*2 enclosure) would affect it. I assume they often do it this way so it’s easier to collect the eggs, but I wanted to know if anyone who breeds pythons or any other reptile does it differently.
