bloodhound mixes

for your breed-specific enjoyment and consideration, I present my 1/2 bloodhound, 1/4 lab, 1/4 catahoula sisters. I’ve had Willa (95 lbs) since puppyhood from a family with an accidental litter. I found her sister Emmie (75 lbs) on Craigslist in October and added her to the pack. I also have a wolfhound lab mix from Hawaii who is their elderly mentor and critic.

happy baked beans sunbathing and chasing things daily 🖤🖤

edited to add: these girls have made me bloodhound loyalists for life. they have so much personality and bring such joy and humor to my life. they’re a handful and exhausting, but I am forever changed as a bloodhound owner 🥰

Bloodhound/Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix

Looking at setting up a visit to adopt this handsome fella, a Bloodhound/Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix, as a companion for my 1 year old Labrador,
Who is also a male. Anyone have any experience with this mix, and things I should know about the Bloodhound side in general? My boy could use an adult dog as a mentor and friend since it’s been just he and I since I moved to Tennessee in May, and he had a senior dog friend when we lived back home with my grandparents. Would like to get him a friend but curious about any pros/cons with this breed mix and how it could pair with my boy.

Thank you!

Riley the Service Dog

Hello! This is Riley! He’s 50% BloodHound, 30% German Shepherd, 10% Husky (some extra percent between Husky and Shepherd!)

He was severely abused in his first home until 1.5 y/o and then went into SD training where he experienced some abuse from my buddy’s partner, Now he is mine now (he’s 7 now almost 8) and I’ve had him for about 1.5 years.
He’s a very anxious dog and he kinda just melts. As he gets even older he just moves at his own sassy timing but surprisingly still loves to do his SD tasks.

Since this is a BH subreddit I wanted to ask more about how do you all enrich your older boys. He loves sniffing and hotdogs and he does lift his paw and points. Just curious but also, can I see your puppers?!

Thank you all for your time!

Doesn’t get along with cat

We adopted this big guy three years ago when he was 2yrs old. From the day we brought him home, he will attack our cat, who has lived with our previous dogs before. It has not gotten any better since and we have to keep the cat behind a door in a separate room. Otherwise he will actively hunt her down. He has never got a hold of our cat but I would only assume he would try to kill her if he did. He’s otherwise a gentle giant. Gets along with dogs, doesn’t bother other animals or even neighborhood cats. I assume it’s something to do with the cat being in the house, although he doesn’t have the same issue with another dog in the house.

Anything thoughts on how we can bond these two or is it a lost cause?

A long appreciation post about my best love, Ella Bella Boo, the Shood Hei… Bloodhound/Shar Pei 🩷

I don’t know if crosses are allowed here, but I thought this community might appreciate my Shood Pound, Shar Pei/Bloodhound. I’m stuck in the hospital with my father today, and figured this was the time to introduce her to her relatives!

I’ve rescued Shar Pei’s my whole adult life through North American Shar Pei rescue. But four years ago this little girl (who later, to no one’s surprise, tested to be Shar Pei/Bloodhound) was found roaming the local state park with her mother, a beautiful Shar Pei.

I had a friend who works at the local rescue and she knew that my last Shar Pei had passed the month before from bloat. It was horribly traumatic. She was only four and died on the operating table. When the mom and baby were found the rescue didn’t want to put them up for general adoption due to all of the health problems Shar Pei’s are known to suffer from… so she called me.

I didn’t want a new dog yet, and sadly I could even look at the mother without crying, she looked exactly like my girl I had just lost… but I did agree to drive mom to the Houston brand of NASPR (she IMMEDIATELY found a forever home) and take on the weird little mix, who I named Ella. The last pic is her puppy photo taken in the shelter. 💕

Two days after she came home, my relationship of 8 years ended. I moved him out and prepared myself for oncoming depression… but let me tell you… this “little” dog had other ideas! 😂

I’m used to Shar Pei’s. They sleep the huge majority of the day and night, would rather die than get their paws wet or muddy, if it’s raining they have to be drug out to pee… I had one who would literally hang her butt over the side of the deck and pee just so she wouldn’t have to leave the shelter of the deck roof!

The first morning after my breakup it was raining and I was prepared to sleep all day… all week… whatever.

But Ella said NOPE.

She stood in front of my face, licked my forehead, pawed my pillow, and started barking… incessantly. I got up thinking she just needed to potty, I opened the back door, and she RAN to the first puddle and dove head first into it. Next, she applied that sniffer and proceeded to inspect every square into of our huge back yard. Every. Square. Inch. I coaxed her back inside, dried her off, and tried to go back to sulking in bed. NOPE! The barking and prodding began again. The slobbery chops. The big, sad eyes. The floppy, floppy (but still Shar Pei shaped 😂) ears.

I give in to her every single time.

I’ve had to learn a lot. Shar Pei’s are generally pretty quiet dogs… oh. my. goodness. The full chested BORKS that Ella lets out! AT EVERYTHING! She doesn’t howl on her own… but I can get her to and it’s the sweetest howl I’ve ever heard.

If my Shar Pei’s got out of the fence, they wouldn’t wander more than a few yards before running back. If Ella gets out… good luck! That nose takes over and she is GONE. She’s on the scent and won’t stop till she’s either caught or has found the thing she’s looking for, normally a neighboring dog or the kids playing soccer at the park. But it’s hilarious! She finds them but instead of playing with them, it’s like “Yep, there you are. I found you. What’s next” and she moves on to the next smell that needs to be found.

She hunts CONTINUALLY. Lizards. Mice. Rabbits. Possums. Skunks. (OH, THE SKUNKS!!!) It’s doesn’t matter, she’s after them.

Regular leashes were a nightmare, she’s 80 pounds of muscle and nose and has pulled me down hills on my belly. I finally got her a 15’ lead and a great harness and it was a revelation. She wasn’t pulling to get away, she was pulling to cover a greater sniffing area. Strafing left and right and left and right. She’s not pulled me down once since.

We live in central Texas and it’s a million degrees right now, but as soon as it cools I think we’re going to start doing some canicross training. I think she’ll love it and god knows I could do with some more human interaction! 😂

I care for my 86 yo father, and it’s a lonely life. I could have not gotten another dog. I could have gotten another sleepy dog. I could have slept for a week, or a month, or a year, but I didn’t. I got a judgmental, bossy, loving hulk of a Shood Hei. Sometimes you don’t get what you think you want, you get exactly what you need.

Bloodhound Biting

Hey everyone, I have a 3 y/o male bloodhound with serious behavioral issues. He’s bitten a couple of people and I thought I had it corrected, but today he bit my mom and it was pretty bad.

At this point I’m confident I need to rehome him, which breaks my heart. I would never give him to a shelter or anything that would make him homeless or at risk of ending up in a bad situation.

I just wanted to see if any of you had thoughts or suggestions. Thanks

1 year 2 month Pupdate: Angus

He’s the best (and first) bloodhound I’ve ever had. He loves his brother (8 y/o Rottweiler/Akita mix). He loves his humans (mom especially <3)

Loves:
+Mom. Snuggling next to, on top of, under, or within 2’ of mom
+Cardboard boxes for biting 1000 tiny teeth holes into
+Water bottles - make satisfying cronches
+Paper - love to shred
+Stealing toys from Gordon
+Smelling his humans’ breath - especially in the morning
+Dog parks but only if no more than 3 dogs and none of the dogs jump him. Partial to small girl dogs.
+Humans who are allergic to or otherwise scared of dogs. Let him love you

Hates
+Humans who are overly excited to meet him - he wishes to not be perceived with such positive energy
+Being left at home while mom and dad walk Gordon - it’s not fair even though he knows his turn is next
+Anytime mom leaves period ever. Why does she leave me?
+coming inside when asked politely

A few common questions angus receives when out and about:

  1. is that a dog or a horse
  2. are bloodhounds usually so tall
  3. are you sure he’s not a Great Dane

how do you treat bloody nose and facial injuries?

Hello there, this is Lime, 3 YO bloodhound. He's allergic to everything and some time a couple of weeks ago he started scratching his nose. During this time our vet prescribed some medicine to treat his nose area, but once we apply the medicine he licks it all away. He keeps scratching the area and it gets worse over time. We'll go to the vet soon again, but the question is perhaps you had to deal with something similar and have tips how to deal with this?

Are you guys ever tempted to put a clip on the back of their heads?

(Nothing mean, like a padded garment clip or similar.)

I would be. Please tell me someone has done this.
