BBC Plots 'Poirot' Reboot; Casting Underway For Agatha Christie Icon

The self-proclaimed “greatest detective in the world” is about to get his latest screen incarnation. Deadline can reveal that the BBC has committed to reimagining Hercule Poirot in a major television series based on the beloved novels of Agatha Christie.

Sources said the British broadcaster secured the adaptation in a highly competitive situation, with other networks and streamers bidding. The BBC is understood to have made a significant commitment to the project, meaning it could run for up to three seasons over the coming years. Season 1 is expected to premiere in the second half of 2027.

Deadline hears that the Poirot reboot is housed at Mammoth Screen, which has a long track record of adapting Christie’s work, having produced BBC series including And Then There Were None and Murder is Easy. Mammoth founder Damien Timmer executive-produced many episodes of Poirot, the David Suchet series that ran for nearly 25 years on ITV.

Responsibility for adapting Christie’s work has fallen to Benji Walters, a relatively unknown writer who has credits on BBC series Noughts + Crosses and spent time developing an adaptation of Brideshead Revisited with Call Me by Your Name director Luca Guadagnino in 2020. The project was in with the BBC and HBO, but ultimately never made it to the screen.

Sources said Walters has breathed new life into the fictional Belgian detective, but script details are currently being kept under wraps. The adaptation, which will be produced with Agatha Christie Limited, is expected to be filmed in Liverpool and the north-west of England over the summer.

The search for Poirot, Christie’s most famous and longest-running character, is underway. The role will likely attract significant interest, with several high-profile actors portraying the detective over the years. British audiences will associate Poirot with Suchet, but he was played by John Malkovich in the 2018 limited series The ABC Murders (also produced by Mammoth). Kenneth Branagh donned the detective’s distinctive moustache in three movies: Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, and A Haunting in Venice.

Poirot appeared in 33 novels and 51 short stories, comprising some of Christie’s most celebrated work. The Christie canon is as in demand as ever. Netflix recently streamed Seven Dials, starring Helena Bonham Carter and Mia McKenna Bruce, while BritBox is planning to bring crime-fighting couple Tommy and Tuppence back to TV in Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence.

BritBox (US) - June 2026 Schedule Announced

BBC Studios has announced the titles coming to BritBox (US) in June 2026, which include a range of new BritBox Originals and classic British fare, as well as the spring slate. BritBox is a digital video subscription service offering the most extensive collection of British TV in the U.S. and Canada.

The June lineup includes A Woman of Substance, which brings Barbara Taylor Bradford’s iconic bestseller to life in a sweeping new period drama led by Brenda Blethyn (Vera, Little Voice) and breakout star Jessica Reynolds (House of Guinness, Outlander).

Spanning decades of ambition, betrayal, and reinvention, A Woman of Substance follows Yorkshire maid Emma Harte as she defies the limits placed upon her in a relentless rise to power and revenge. The series premieres on BritBox on June 24.

Now streaming, The Other Bennet Sister reimagines Jane Austen’s world through the eyes of Mary Bennet (Ella Bruccoleri, Call the Midwife), placing the often-overlooked sister at the center of a fresh Regency-era story of love, ambition, and self-discovery. The finale of the critically acclaimed series premieres on June 24.

Is BritBox not showing the RHS Chelsea garden show this year?

I see it's on Premier, which means I guess I'll have to sign up. I'm sure I'll love it, but I don't like being forced to pay extra for things I used to get on the original Britbox.

Do Americans realize Britbox is garbage compared to Iplayer?

I have access to Iplayer and I was curious to see what Britbox offered, to their credit they did offer a lot of dramas , some high end documentaries and game/panel shows, but in looking closer, I noticed very few programs highlight social issues or featuring the UK's diversity such as the black, LGBTq or disabled community. I saw hardly any regional programing for Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales. Most of the content seems to be nature docs, travel or content about the royal, and not about everyday people in the UK. Barely any hard hitting, uncensored docs that you see on BBC and Channel 4. And zero docs on music or performances It doesn't represent the real UK ar all. Its sad that this is the only legal access to UK content, though Netflix fills some if the gap. You are better off accessing Iplayer, ITV and Channel 4 with a VPN, its cheaper and you get all the content..

Lucy Worsley Investigates Upgrade?!

I get the idea behind Premier and don’t have a problem with the concept, even though I chose not to upgrade. My question is: Why do we need to upgrade to see even one episode of Lucy Worsley-even ones from Season 1?

Oho! All Bennet Sister eps now available to stream w/Premier

I, for one, feel satisfied enough with this outcome. Yeah, it would have been nice if they'd decided this in advance and/or let us know this would be the case. Did they actually change their minds because folks were so mad or was this the plan all along? Y'all feel better about premier or still nah? Happy viewing!

Father brown - missing Season 13

Would anyone know why (in Australia) that I wouldn’t have access to Season 13 of Father Brown? Google searches seem to tell me that it should have started airing back in February, but mine still only goes up to Season 12.

I also don’t have Season 4 of Sister Boniface, but google seems to be telling me that I might not be alone on that one.

I have a question about rain in British TV shows.

I have noticed (especially crime shows) that no one wears a hat when rain is pouring down. Yes, they wear raincoats, but no hats. Why? Is this just on TV or is it a British thing? This may be just in older shows which is what I watch.

Got a year for $79.99 - less than $7/month :)

So . . . I cancelled my Britbox last November (I had gotten their Black Friday deal the year before). I just moved my viewing to my $5/month PBS app. I had also cancelled my Prime, but realized you can still watch all the live channels on Prime for free. So between the two I was getting my detective show fix and was happy with that.

This week I randomly saw an offer for Britbox on the Prime app for $79.99 a year. Grabbed it up and am finishing the last season of Grace which had been added just before I cancelled. I don't mind not getting premier viewing on shows at all, and now I can leisurely watch whatever aired between November and now.

Why does The Professionals feel like a more hardcore version of American police procedurals from the same period?

OK, I'm technically watching this one on Tubi, but I hear it's on BritBox too, so I figured it was all right to ask here.

So, I'm American, and I've heard of the 70s/80s crime show The Professionals for well over a decade, but because it never aired on any American cable channels (as far as I was aware) nor were any Region 1 DVD/Blu-ray box sets manufactured, it was only until recent years that I was able to watch it, and the first thing that struck me - aside from how much ass it kicks - is how hardcore it is compared to American police procedurals from the 70s and 80s. Like, I love shows like Adam-12, Miami Vice, S.W.A.T. and Hunter, but this one has more balls than all of those shows combined. Why is that?

Are some shows/episodes abridged in any way?

I'm new to BritBox and glad to have it in my streaming lineup.

My Downton box set is packed away somewhere, so I started watching on BritBox, just to have something on in the background while I was doing chores around the house. A couple of times, I thought there might be some dialog missing here and there.

I'm in the US and I know that when Downton was on Masterpiece here, we sometimes got re-edited episodes that were sliced up and put back together to fit the time slot. So now I'm wondering if BritBox is serving up those US versions to US customers?

Upstairs Downstairs (1970s) S3 E9 "Desirous of Change" Richard's sudden change of character

I wonder if anyone thought that >!the way Richard Bellamy behaved with the French Countess was altogether contradictory of the character we thought he had. Ignoring so many red flags. Throwing himself at her. !<

What did you think?
