How to fix Son of a Dungeon looking "video gamey"

Nvidia's got a whole SDK for character rendering that includes skin and hair neural rendering and it might be the thing that helps get the face renders out of the uncanny valley https://github.com/NVIDIA-RTX/RTXCR

It can do subsurface scattering and more realistic diffusion for enhanced reflectivity and more realistic rendering of the materials.

Left a comment on the video about RTX Skin, which is built into the SDK

Edit: Just to clear things up, I don't think the footage they showed looks bad. It looks like a game because it's being rendered in Unreal, which makes a TON of sacrifices to rendering accuracy to run in real time. It's a game engine, not blender. I'm just suggesting Nvidia's SDK because it could help refine the look further without being a massive time sink.

If it were me, I'd just lean even more into the video game aesthetic. Stylize things even more. Would only make the show look more unique and cohesive than it already does.

I think a lot of people are getting hung up on the end result without realizing how flexible this workflow lets them be. It's not JUST about saving time on setups or rendering. They can do any dynamic camera movement and lighting conditions they want. Just because the output doesn't look photorealistic today doesn't mean adopting this sort of workflow early is a waste of time or some sort of creative compromise.

I'm a "View Boi" for the crew - are you?

As a long time (decade+?) Youtube Viewer turned website patron (for the extended VFX AR) I've developed a habit of habitually watching every video twice; First on the website, then a day later on YouTube.

Sometimes this is for legitimate memory purposes (catching a great insight twice, a day apart, to make sure it sticks) - but more often than not, to give an extra view on the YT platform for the crew. Now I make it a point, embracing my status as a drop of water in the ocean, to give it a watch ASAP - telling myself in some way that I've "done my part and then some" 😂.

Curious if anyone else is double dipping out there? Intentionally or otherwise.

Practical explosion technique

Looking to hear some thoughts from this community.

This is a timelapse that I recently shot, of an incoming storm.

Obviously I heavily color-graded it but I thought, man this looks like a perfect shot of an explosion without the physical hazard.

I'm wondering

... what are some other techniques I can use to get this same outcome without injuring myself?

World Cup motion capture

I’m surprised the guys haven’t talked much about motion capture used in sports.

In the UK, on the BBC’s website, they have live motion capture footage for some of the World Cup games, that’s surprisingly detailed for covering 25 separate people and being done without too much of a delay. I don’t watch American sports so I don’t know if this is just a common place thing over there, but I assume this is something some stadiums have rather than something the BBC implemented.

Did I film a UFO in the lightening storm last night?

You will see an object appear from the top left of the screen and move downward until it is just above the ground and then it changes direction and flies out of the lower right side of the screen. The object is clearest when there are flashes of lighting.

Do you remember the quote? The more scratches something is the better quality

Hi Guys and gal's, I was wondering if anybody knew the exact quote from Sam about quality products. This was from corridor or corridor crew years ago. His point was if a product could handle damages it didn't break so the quality is good.

Or you could help me find the correct video.

Thanks!
