My Australian test cricket development plan

This is just something I drafted up for a bit of fun. Obviously it's impossible to predict form, new players developing, and retirements, but I started doing it for Smith + the cartel and decided to just keep on going for fun (until Cam Green retires, which is obviously unrealistic to know what the team will look like then). What do you guys think?

Australia brought in 4 new players in 2016 after losing home test series to SA. Another revamp needed after a decade?

Back in 2016 when Australia had lost both the tests against the Proteas, they axed old players and brought in 4 new players for the final pink ball test - Nic Maddinson, Matt Renshaw, Pete Handscomb and Matthew Wade. Jackson Bird was also recalled.

The current team also needs a similar revamp. My two new xi bets:

  1. Matt Renshaw
  2. Campbell Kellaway/Nathan McSweeney
  3. Nathan McSweeney/Kurtis Patterson
  4. Steve Smith
  5. Travis Head
  6. Cameron Green
  7. Alex Carey
  8. Corey Rocchiccioli/Matt Kuhneman/Todd Murphy
  9. Pat Cummins
  10. Mitchell Starc
  11. Josh Hazlewood/Scott Boland

My reasoning -
It isn’t sustainable to make Head open the innings because only Smith and Head in the current team can play big innings. Sure he can do on flat Aussie wickets but he won’t be useful overseas. Also, it’s not a surprise anymore that Labuschagne and Weatherald haven’t been playing with the correct technique, form and temperament to stick with them further. Coming to the all rounders, I don’t see a reason to play 2 of them when we can play a specialist batsman. Head, Carey and Green used to make a solid lower-middle order. Finally, I’m opting out of Lyon because he is no longer the gun fielder like once he was. Looked pretty tired on the field. His bowling also hasn’t been any special in recent times. Blokes like Murphy and Kuhnemann have showed plenty of promise and all three of the spinners I mentioned can bat good enough to strengthen the batting lineup.

SA and NZ have an easy route ahead for the WTC final. The chances look bleak for Australia even when they’re leading the points table. It’s high time the team is revamped before quite possibly the biggest 12 months of test cricket hits the team like an unstoppable rock. What’s your take on this?

Realistic #3 Options As A Watch

So, I'm going to make some assumptions here.

A) Marnus is cooked. Honestly of the big 3 question marks, he seems to have the worst recent resume and the eye test is abhorrent. I'd be surprised if he plays in Mackay.

B) Weathers looks atrocious, but his FC results in the past 18 months here and Blighty mean we regrettably have to persevere and just hope he can find something that clicks. As awful and paingul as that sounds.

C) Greeny continue to do enough to be awful to watch, but basically undroppable, partially because the other two are worse and partially because we know sending him to Shield does nothing. He hits 200 for fun and then comes back to the test side and does WA all-rounder things (pain).

So, who are the realistic options to take #3, assuking Weathers and Cam still have some sort of leash to run with?

And I mean realistic. Not Kellaway, not Konstas, not Wyllie, or some other young guy with a nice eye test and a FC average of 26.

Is it a Green to #3, Inglis to #5?

Is it McSweeney?

Is it Renshaw, and if so, is it Renshaw to open with Jake, Trav to #4 and Smith to #3 or some abstract shit?

Is it Carey to open, Inglis at #6, because fuck it, what else is there?

Whats your innovative, imaginative yet still undeniably reliable and completely logical solution to the next 12 months, under the hypothetical assumption (which you may or may not share) that Marnus is cooked and need a half summer minimum in QLD?
