DF64 II User Experience Question [$400]

Looking for a little advice from those that have used the DF64 Gen 2. I'm looking to purchase a grinder to go alongside my Profitec Go and am looking to stay below $400. I am thinking hard about going with a J Ultra as I currently love my K Ultra for pour over coffee. I've also hand ground as my primary method for the past 5 years. That said, I've been researching electric grinders for espresso specifically and the issues people run into, at least as reported online, give me pause. I assume there's a fair amount of reporting bias, so wanted to ask:

Is the alignment "issue" in the DF64 II a real issue that impacts the shot? I'd really love to not purchase a grinder that then relies on tinfoil shimming.

Compared to the hand grinder experience that I'm already comfortable with, it just works and I'm familiar with their workflow. That said, if I'm pulling back to back shots that's where an electric grinder would obviously win. I’m pulling shots maybe 2-3 times a day and work from home. Just trying to make that final decision between the two. I'm also aware of the flavor profile difference between conical and flat and honestly I enjoy both similarly. It just feels from everything I've read that the J Ultra offers a fantastic grind, great small adjustment for fine tuning, obviously with some elbow grease, but without the quirks. Maybe I've already decided but would love to hear from those that have experience with the DF64!

DF64 Gen 2 Stock Stainless Burrs vs SSP HU dilemma

I’m facing a bit of a first-world problem.

Today marks exactly 2 years and 1 day since I bought my DF64 Gen 2 with stock stainless steel burrs (got it on sale for $319). I've had great results with it, and since I clean and maintain it regularly, it’s still in pristine condition.

Recently, I was gifted a brand-new DF64 Gen 2 that already has SSP HU (High Uniformity) burrs installed. Unfortunately, I don't have a gift receipt, so I need to choose between two paths:

Sell my current 2-year-old grinder (with stock burrs) and upgrade to the gifted SSP HU unit.

Sell the new SSP HU unit as-is and keep my trusty original setup.

I primarily drink espresso straight up (medium to light-medium roasts mostly).

  • New Interest: I’ve also recently gotten into cold brew, and I'm dabbling a bit more with coarser brews.

Here are the specific questions I'm wrestling with:

  • SSP HU vs. Stock: For someone drinking straight espresso, is the jump to SSP HU burrs a noticeable and worthwhile upgrade over the stock stainless burrs, or are the stock ones already hitting close to the ceiling for flavor?
  • Dual Grinder? I briefly thought about keeping both—using one dedicated to espresso and dialing the other in for coarser grinds (like cold brew or pour over). But I know there are much better grinders designed for pour over vs espresso.

Would love to hear your thoughts on what you'd do in my shoes!

New DF64V Gen 3 stalls and shuts down under load even at 1800 RPM — possible motor controller issue?

Hi everyone,

I'm running into a severe issue with a brand new DF64V Gen 3. I suspect a motor controller or PCB failure, as I've seen reports of burnt control boards on these recent 2026 revisions, but I'd like to get the community's thoughts.

The Issue: The grinder initially shut down under minimal load, and now it shuts down even without beans. Here is the exact sequence:

  • Initial Test: 1800 RPM, grind setting 30. It ground only ~5 g out of a 10g dose (test) before shutting off and becoming completely unresponsive.
  • Reboot: After unplugging from the wall to reset it and restarting, it managed to grind another 1.5 g and then shut off again.
  • Further Testing: I increased the grind setting to 60+ and managed to finish grinding the remaining beans.
  • The Final Failure: Afterwards, I adjusted the dial back down to around 30 (feeling noticeable resistance/effort when turning it finer, likely due to retained coffee). When I turned the grinder on completely empty (no beans), it immediately shut down again in the exact same way. (Note: I did not get an Error 06, it just completely shuts off).

Machine Details:

  • Model: DF64V Gen 3
  • Specs: 220–240 V / 400 W

I recorded a video showing the exact behavior.

Questions for the community:

  1. Has anyone else with a Gen 3 experienced these exact overload protection shut-offs or a burnt control board?
  2. Is there any known DIY fix for this (e.g., swapping a specific component like a thermistor on the PCB), or is a full board replacement the only way?
  3. If you've been through a warranty claim for this exact issue, please share your experience. How did the dealer handle it, and did the replacement board resolve the problem permanently?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Brand new grinder not working [DF54]

I just received it today. Took it out of the box, measured 10g of beans, set the dial to 2 (dark roast beans) and hit the button. Nothing really came out. I can hear the machine running but no grind coming out. I went back through the manual it came with but nothing jumps out that I should have done differently. I did spritz the beans once with water.

Anyone have suggestions?

Concerned about DF54 clogging. DF54 1.5 vs DF64V Gen 3 — worth paying 2.5x more?

I’m trying to choose between the DF54 1.5 and DF64V Gen 3 as my main grinder, and I’d especially like to hear from people who have experience with the newer versions.

My current coffee setup is:

Because I use several brewing methods, being able to move from espresso to much coarser settings and then return accurately to an espresso setting matters to me.

The DF54 1.5 initially seemed like the obvious choice at around $200. It appears to offer excellent grind quality for the money and covers basically everything I want to brew.

However, my biggest concern is clogging.

I've found a lot of reports about DF54s clogging at the chute/declumper, sometimes requiring frequent cleaning or intervention. I know the grinder has gone through revisions, so I'm having trouble separating problems with older versions from the current DF54 1.5.

For people who actually own the DF54 1.5: has the clogging problem been fixed or significantly improved?

That's actually one of the main reasons I'm now considering spending considerably more on the DF64V Gen 3 (~$500).

The Gen 3 seems particularly interesting because of its redesigned/more efficient grinding chamber and chute, larger 64mm burrs, stronger motor, variable RPM, faster grinding, and its ability to cover everything from espresso through filter and very coarse grinding.

My assumption is that the DF64V Gen 3 should be less prone to clogging than the DF54, especially with the changes made to this newest generation—but I'd really like to know whether owners' experience supports that.

So my real questions are:

  • Does the current DF54 1.5 still have a meaningful clogging problem?
  • Is the DF64V Gen 3 actually less prone to clogging, or would I just be spending more money and potentially dealing with similar maintenance?
  • How do they compare when frequently switching espresso → V60/Chemex → French press/cold brew → back to espresso?
  • Can both reliably return to a previous espresso setting after making large grind adjustments?
  • Is there a noticeable difference in cup quality, particularly for espresso and pour-over?
  • Does the DF64V's variable RPM provide a meaningful advantage when switching between espresso and filter?
  • Aside from clogging, are there workflow, retention, static, noise, or build-quality differences that become obvious when actually living with them?

And ultimately:

At roughly $200 for the DF54 1.5 vs ~$500 for the DF64V Gen 3, is the DF64V actually worth the extra ~$300 for someone using espresso, V60, Chemex, French press and cold brew?

I'm willing to spend the extra money if it buys me a meaningfully better grinder and especially a more trouble-free long-term experience. But if the current DF54 has largely solved its clogging issues and the actual cup-quality difference is small, I'd rather know that too.

Would especially appreciate feedback from anyone who has owned or extensively used both, and from DF54 1.5 / DF64V Gen 3 owners.

Df64v2 chute clogging

I am very frustrated: whether grinding espresso or pour over (recently it’s been consistent pour over at 55) I am doing RDT, still getting some chaff, and having persistent problems with retention and chute clogging. First pic is after 2 days with bellowing during and after grind. Not allowing 2nd pic but I have more coffee after using a small paint brush is after grinding 40g of coffee. Clearly I need to tear down the machine and clean as I got 40.3 out.

What gives? I’ve posted here in the remote past, it just feels like a retention/clogging prone design from a reasonably expensive grinder.

DF64 good upgrade from Ancaso? [£150]

Own an Ancaso I-1, loved it for the last few years but feel I want a more modern machine. Saw an advert for a gen 1 DF64. Wanted to know if it’s a worthy move at that price. I know it’ll need a few mods. Uk based making 1-2 drinks a day max with single dosing. Using a sage bambino for the moment, plans to upgrade next year.

Any guidance appreciated

Burr Alignment Issues DF64 Gen 2

Hi everyone, I appreciate the help on my last thread. I took some advice and found the alignment appears to be the issue.

When I spin the burrs(power off reaching in) only a small corner touches. The burrs will spin freely to a small point where they touch. I did the dry erase test and it shows there as well. The top burr was completely wiped when I tested, so I’m suspecting the bottom burr is at an angle.

I’ve tested the following: swapping burrs(new set and top and bottom), trying all 3 positions for top burr carrier, deep clean with a brush and Vaccum, adding shims to top and bottom(tried 8+ with no change).

The only thing that has made a difference was leaving the screws lose. If the bottom screws are loose, the contact is normal. However they make a lot of noise and are unstable so it was more of a test.

I’m pretty lost on what to do next, so I’d really appreciate some advice. Thank you all!

A whole bean came out through the grinder?

Hi there!

Recently I was grinding some coffee for some cold brew, can't remember at what number, but pretty coarse. When grinding, I noticed a whole bean came out of the grinder. Even though I ground the beans quite coarse, it's not a "whole bean" coarse. How could this have happened?

Grinder whines, too many fines [DF64V v3]

I bought a new DF64V gen 3 in March, and finally got delivery in lateJune, about a month ago. I do lever-pull (robot and flair classic) espresso drinks as well as pour overs. I'm not an expert in either, more of an advanced beginner. Previously, used manual or electric rotary burr grinders. I wanted more convenience, precision, and ability to play with flavors.

Since arrival, there have been issues. I need help figuring them out. The machine is nearly silent when empty, but since the first use it has had a high-pitched whine after every grind. This happens every time, even if I feed just one bean. RPM setting and fineness don't matter. It goes away if I change the grind setting to coarser while it is on but empty, and gets worse if grind setting is made finer. For example, if I grind at 35, it goes away at 36, but comes back at 35 and gets worse as I go lower. I have taken the burrs apart and cleaned them, and confirmed that it is caused by retained grounds. I checked zero point. I have not checked alignment yet. I am guessing I have an alignment or electronics issue, but would appreciate advice. I can work around this, but is it normal?

Also, at the end of every grind, the rpm speeds up, I believe to maximum rpm (1800). It lasts a couple of seconds and goes back to the set rpm. However, it seems that the high-rpm grinding is finer, or has more fines, than the rest of the grind. It only affects a retained bean or two. This causes problems with grind consistency. Is this normal behavior, or is it trying to clean the retained beans? Or some other issue?

It has also stalled several times. I always do a hot start, and usually grind espresso at 1000 rpm, pour over at 800 rpm. Medium beans for espresso, and light to medium for pour over. No extreme light roast. It even happened on pour-over coarseness, around 75 setting. Again, is this related to the retained beans? The stops were sudden, without any indication of motor strain. I did get an error code. I don't slow feed, but there is some sort of slow feed/anti-popcorn device built in.

There are more fines than I expect, or size inconsistency.. Draw down for pour over is extremely slow, even with coarse settings like 80, it can take 6-8 minutes. And espresso requires a setting in the mid-30s with medium-roast beans. The excessive fines is my biggest issue. It really interferes with pour over.

I have been told by customer service that this is normal behavior for a flat burr grinder, and that it should go away after break in. Is this normal behavior for a new machine? What can I do to reduce fines?
