18 DRZ400SM - Dead/Flickering

https://reddit.com/link/1unj0gu/video/1bl52j0vt9bh1/player

2018 DRZ400SM, 5200 Mi

Went on a 120 Mile loop and stopped after 40miles to stretch legs, went to start back up and no luck and to bump start and made it to closest Oreilllys with them telling me my battery is shot. Bump started it again and went back home with flickering screen every 15 secs which never told me how fast I was going. Couldnt get power to come on with key on, Checked rectifier (still good), Bought new battery still no power so I thought to charge the new battery and finally got it after 6 hours to start.. IMO thinking stator is bad so ordered a new stator..

Went to my local dirt bike shop to have them swap stator and see whats going on to which they told me they couldn't duplicate the problem after riding it for 1hr and 45 mins... and told me stator and rectifier is good and so is battery so I decided to ride it about an hour in on highway and then had it happen again, went back home and turned off and tried to turn back on, NO POWER

Any wisdom from you knowledgeable folks?

Typical reliability of big bore drz400sm?

Looking for a drz, mainly for the availability of parts and ease of maintenance.

Only rode dirt as a teenager, crf250r mostly and tried the 450s a few times.

I'm honestly worried the 400 will be a little gutless for what i want, but i don't want to go putting thousands into it within a few months to chase power.

With that in mind, I'm looking at the more modded bikes on marketplace near me. From 3x3, jetted, slip on exhaust, to bbk, hot cams, full exhaust.

Wondering what sort of reliability y'all would expect assuming it's been put together properly. The one I'm going to see when I have time has about 2k on the motor build, is it reasonable to expect another 10k before a rebuild?

How's your day going?

I'm trying to get the front sprocket off to put on a 15 tooth one.

I tried to get it off with a shifter (shifting spanner) holding all the brakes, couldn't get it off.

Was able to see a mechanic and he got a rattle gun to get it off and it was only $30. Thought it was great as it saved me money buying more tools for a once off job as I will never tighten it as much as it was on stock.

He got it off, said "are you going to replace the sprocket now?". I said no, and that I would put the nut back on with a shifter, put the washer down on it, and ride back home (5min) and replace. Dude said that was unsafe, put it back on with the rattle a little bit and said I could probably get it off with a shifter as he "didn't put it back on that tight", gave me a rusty socket and extension bar, probably thought I was an idiot. Got home, couldn't get it off.

Asked my neighbour for some help. He sat on the front and rear brake while I tried to get it off. I couldn't. It is still way too tight.

Neighbour said he'd message someone he knew up the road who might have a rattle gun, haven't heard anything back, it's been about 2 hours.

So now I'm sitting here feeling like a fucking idiot for wasting a whole day trying to save a bit of money. Debating either to wait for the neighbour to get back to me, go buy myself my own rattle gun or try and get someone to come to my house to take it off. fml

Fuel line routing

After installing a Clarke tank, the original pre-bent fuel line was too short (I used it for a bit, but it seemed tenuous - see third pic). I replaced the line today. To avoid bad angles and any kink on the fuel line, I looped it forward, then back to the carb on the inside of the petcock.

Question: this super thick reinforced fuel line runs very close to the engine with this arrangement. Any concerns?

TIA

What flavor of Keihin is this.

Can anybody tell me the flavor of Keihin this is? It is on an 05 DRZ-SM and has been sitting. I need to get the right rebuild kit for it so she can see the road again.

"extra parts"

I was replacing my year brake pads, and these two metal tabs fell out when I removed the old ones. The new ones didn't come with replacements, and I can't figure out where they came from exactly.

Anyone know what they are from?

Radiator hose routing - is this normal?

Bought a used 2001 DRZ400E that came with the radiator hoses routed like this, but I can't seem to find photos of other DRZs with the same routing. Is this normal, or was it a mod done by the previous owner?

Worlds worst oil change

Went to do a routine oil change on my 2000 drz-400. Everything was going well until I tried to put the oil drain in the crankcase back in, barely got a half turn before the metal just popped apart. Is this a job for jb weld or should I start looking for a new bike?

Gas in oil

How’s it going guys. I let my bike sit for 6-7 months without planning too and left a small amount of fuel in the tank. I replaced the battery and planned on switching the oil immediately but took it for a 5-10 spin around my neighborhood and when I checked the oil when I got back I noticed my oil smelt like fuel. So I ended up doing a flush and oil change including the filter and figured I was okay. Road the bike again for about 10-15 minutes this time and everything was solid. A few days pass and I check the oil and noticed the oil smelt like gas again. I plan on cleaning the carb but would this require a rebuilt carb? Also I plan to see if it’s my petcock that’s the issue would I just disconnect the line to see if it leaks without the bike being on? Also could there be any damage from ridding in for no more than 30 minutes broken up between 3 separate sessions, one being completely fresh oil? It’s my first carbureted bike, thank you in advance.

Letting it sit for a period of time

Later this year I'll have to leave my 400 sitting for 2 months, then potentially up to 6 months. What precautions should I take for each of the intervals?

How to get replacement/spare key

I have an 06 DRZ400. I want to make a spare key but I don’t have the key code or anything like that. Dealer said I can get blanks from them and go to a 3rd party lock smith and they will make me the keys. I went to Ace hardware and they said they don’t make them. Pretty home home
Depot doesn’t make them either. Anyone have any suggestions?

I bought an 07, the tank looks bigger than normal

First things first I don't know much about drz aftermarket parts or a ton about drzs in general so sorry if these are dumb questions

I just recently bought an 07 DRZ400, it's pretty clean I think, 12k on the odometer(still not entirely sure if it's miles or hours I've heard both but maybe I'm just being dumb) and it came with some extra goodies like a rear storage bag/rack and he said it was 5-10 more teeth than normal so it supposedly has more torque. He didn't mention this but the gas tank looks a bit large, when I look up other drzs the gas tank is pretty flat and flush with the seat while mine comes up like a mountain just right under my handlebars, maybe someone knows what tank this is and how big it is? Super happy with my purchase regardless and I'm definitely not complaining if it is a bigger tank that just checks another thing off my list 😁

Found out it's a Clarke gas tank, after someone mentioned something about the gas cap i went and looked it says "Clarke USA"

Fuck it, going with the zeta pro armor guards 🤷

Was searching for a front turn signal solution, used the led fork-wrap ones for now but they look bad / low quality. Finally caved and ordered some pro armors with flashers. Didn’t get the triple clamp mount as I’m already using that for my ignition on one side and I already have some bushings to fit the taper as I’ve seen / read they don’t clamp quite right on the stock bar. Went with black guard / blue shield / smoked signals. Hopefully they compliment the bike well.

Drz400sm for smaller riders?

So i’ve decided to potentially start saving up for a drz400sm. I wanted a sumo that was reliable and fairly cheap, i have some experience with dirtbikes(mostly trail bikes, i had a kawi 110 when i was younger and a crf230f later on) I currently ride a surron ultra bee supermoto just for popping wheelies around the neighborhood and surface streets around my area. But all of my friends have sport bikes and so i want a bike that can hang with them in the canyons or just cruising around but my fear is that a drz is too large and too heavy for me especially considering that it would be by far the heaviest bike i’ve ridden. I’m 5’6 and about 110 pounds
