why are so many people here anti-dye?

hey dreddit, i have a genuine question here.

i was searching around online for more specific information on dying patterns into locs, as this seems to be something i virtually never see, but whenever i seem to search online (especially reddit) about dyeing locs, everyone seems to be so against it?

i’m gonna preface this by saying i’ve had my locs for upwards of 5+ years now, and have been bleaching/dyeing my hair (and others, on occasion) by myself the entire journey. i’m no licensed cosmetologist, but i definitely have enough experience to understand the ins and outs of products, and how they can effect locs.

yes, bleaching *does* in fact damage your hair, but it’s 100% possible to manage said damage without completely ruining your locs and going bald. it’s a matter of damage control and maintenance after the fact (which, if you have locs, you rlly should be doing anyway, regardless of the color treatment). so genuinely, why are so many people against it?

civil answers only please, i’m not trying to start an argument or anything. this is something i genuinely don’t understand, and would like some insight on from the other side.

attached are a few of my different dye jobs i’ve had over the years (stripes are most recent, done tonight). feel free to ask abt my own routine and maintenance! im very open to discussion :)

Fresh retwist (first time doing it myself)

My second ever retwist and my shrinkage is already negating 🙏🎉 (they’re 2 months old/how do you think I’m doing?)

Tips for next retwist?

Few Months in to Freeform journey am i doing everything right or nope??

i sponge almost everyday besides the weekend. (Because i never really do anything so,no need to be presentable😭)

i also spray my hair with water.

i barely oil cus i think all of that stuff is just fake tbh (i might after fully washing my hair though)

but my end goal is to get them to drop down so basically so basically so they look kinda look like traditional retwisted dreads but just in their free natural parts

Should I keep my locs or nah?

I’ve had these for years and I’m just wondering if I should keep them or cut them? Did I maintain them correctly, are they well twisted, or do they look healthy? Should I restart? I’m just asking.

Can’t find a cap that fits my locs any recommendations?

Can’t find a cap that fits, it’s so frustrating. They’re always too small. Do you guys have any cap recommendations? All the Von Dutch, Jordan, etc. are small on me — what size would you suggest for someone with 73 short locs?

Update

So I had to change my loc lady because my last one was playing in my head, this one is more way efficient, and my protective style last way longer than usual. I can’t dye my hair yet so I just use hair wax. It’s been two years and I’m glad I made the choice to switch.

How to prevent breakage and keep roots healthy.

I currently have semi Freeforms and plan on keeping them for about a year or 2 before traditionally locking them. Any idea how to prevent breakage and keep roots healthy? I still would like my hair to be healthy on my loc journey. I currently wash it every 2-3 weeks, use tea tree oil and use a hair tie at night to train it to stay standing up (that’s the part I’m nervous about causing breakage to my hair in the future)

How do you deal with frizz on semi-freeform locs? Does the frizz ever go away on its own? Is there any way to tame the frizz besides re-twisting your hair?

Got my locs crocheted for the first time

I got my locs retwisted, and then had them crocheted for the first time. I’m really digging the look!!, but I was wondering if these will get thicker over time. I’m trying to make them thicker so I won’t have to deal with the thinner look. I’m 5 years into my loc journey as well 💯.
