Rob Van Dam vs Jerry Lynn at Hardcore Heaven 1999 was elite

Every time I go back and watch RVD vs Jerry Lynn, I’m reminded how different ECW could be when it wasn’t just chaos and weapons.

This match had everything people don’t usually associate with ECW, clean transitions, athletic pacing, and actual structure, but still kept that ECW edge where anything could escalate at any moment. It felt like two guys trying to outdo each other creatively, not just survive a brawl.

What stands out most is how ahead of its time it felt. RVD’s timing and explosiveness, Jerry Lynn’s precision and selling, it’s almost like a preview of modern indie wrestling before it became a full style.

And yet… it still felt like ECW. The crowd was fully invested, the urgency was there, and every big spot felt like it mattered because of how personal the rivalry had become.

Who deserved a much bigger push in ECW?

Been rewatching a bunch of old Hardcore TV and it hit me again how stacked the midcard was. Guys like Super Crazy, Tajiri, or even Nova brought it every night, but I keep thinking about Doug Furnas. His stuff with RVD, especially their singles match at Natural Born Killaz '96 and those wild tag matches alongside Phil LaFon, was crisp as hell and showed he could hang with the high flyers and brawlers. Or what about Jerry Lynn? Dude was the total package but always seemed to play second fiddle in bigger storylines. Who do you guys think flew under the radar the most? Was it someone from the early Eastern days or a later addition who never got their full push?

Did ECW make “danger” feel more real than other eras of wrestling?

One thing I keep thinking about when I watch old ECW is how often it felt like things could go wrong at any moment.

Watching guys like Sabu or New Jack, even normal sequences had this unpredictable edge to them that you don’t really get in more structured eras. Even something as simple as a setup in a Rob Van Dam match somehow felt like it could turn into chaos depending on how the crowd reacted.

I’m sure a lot of it was still carefully worked, but the presentation made everything feel slightly uncontrolled.

Modern wrestling is way more polished, but ECW had this constant feeling that things were one step away from breaking down in a good way.

Curious if others felt that same tension

I’ve been rewatching some old ECW stuff lately and I keep coming back to RVD vs Jerry Lynn.

There’s just something about those matches that still hits. RVD is doing all the flashy, crazy stuff like only he can, but Jerry Lynn never feels out of place, like he’s actually matching him and not just there to take spots.

What I like is it doesn’t feel “clean” like modern wrestling. It’s fast, a bit messy, and everything feels like it could go wrong at any moment, which kind of makes it better honestly.

Also crazy how some of those big spots actually felt important back then, not just routine highlights.

Who do you think is the single most underrated performer to ever step foot in an ECW ring?

We all know the legends who were made in the ECW Arena—RVD, Sabu, The Sandman, Dreamer, Raven. Their legacies are cemented. But I'm more interested in the guys who never got their full due, whether they were just passing through or were the backbone of the mid-card. For my money, it's someone like Little Guido. He was an incredible worker who was saddled with a comedy gimmick, but when he was given the chance to just wrestle, he consistently put on great matches. Who's your pick for the most underappreciated ECW talent? The guy where you have to say, "Forget the gimmick, just watch his work," and make a case for why they deserve more recognition today. Let's give some unsung heroes their flowers.

Did ECW ever have any actual true “face” stables/factions?

Every group I’m thinking of is a group of heels or tweeners. Obviously there were face tag teams and you could maybe consider the Bwo trio as sort of faces but they still felt like tweeners, and it was still just three people. No version of the triple threat felt like more than tweeners. Any six man tag match never felt like an actual group since they didn’t have team names, just faces that were teaming against a common enemy for a feud.

Sabu vs Taz barely felt like a normal wrestling match

Going back and watching Sabu vs Taz, the atmosphere still feels insane.

The build up made it feel less like a wrestling match and more like two guys who genuinely hated each other finally getting locked in the same room. The crowd was completely invested before the bell even rang.

Taz coming in with that cold, calm energy while Sabu was just pure chaos made the whole thing feel different from a typical hardcore match.

Still one of the most unique big-fight feelings ECW ever created in my opinion.
