I see this problem a lot in fangans where the protagonist barely feels like an actual character and instead just exists to observe the “more interesting” cast members, and by more interesting I really mean the author’s favorites.

Your protagonist should have opinions, flaws, insecurities, emotional reactions, and moments where they’re WRONG. They shouldn’t just stand there narrating events while perfectly solving every case and emotionally supporting everyone else like some kind of therapy robot.

And for the love of GOD, stop turning the protagonist into the author’s personal thirst narrator every time a female character appears. If a character walks into a room wearing a bikini, I do NOT need an entire paragraph describing her body in microscopic detail unless that level of attention actually says something about the protagonist as a character. You can genuinely just say “She was wearing a white bikini” AND NOBODY WILL CARE.

Oh yeah, and a bit unrelated, please stop making half the cast immediately start simping the moment a girl exists. Attraction is one thing, but sometimes it feels less like characters reacting naturally and more like the author pausing the story to remind me who they think is hot. THEY ARE USUALLY TEENAGERS!

At that point, the protagonist stops feeling like a believable character and starts feeling like a camera being controlled directly by the writer.

The protagonist also cannot control the story just because they’re the POV character. Other characters should argue with them, distrust them, draw blades in Rebuttal Showdowns, or even outperform them sometimes. A protagonist who’s always correct and universally respected stops feeling human really fast.

If your protagonist can be replaced with a floating camera or Makoto Naegi and almost nothing changes, there’s probably a problem.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

I've made a few changes. My danganronpa used to be all japanese but I thought it's kinda weird how the "hope of the world" was mysteriously concentrated in one country so I made it international.

On that same logic, I wonder if Monokuma should continue to be my mascot, but making one with the quality of Monokuma (Even if it's just design) it's quite hard without making a copy.

My danganronpa it's a bit more serious than the official games. Monokuma fits on one hand, cause he's so silly, which is dissonant, making it intentionally uncomfortable. On the other hand, maybe a more fitting mascot would be better (And for copyright if it gets messy)

Do you care about this kind of stuff? Do you use Monokuma or make your own thing?

Edit: Is your mascot a human or a machine? In my case, I need mine to be a machine.

If your mastermind is among the cast and they control the mascot, how do they control the mascot while also being part of the group of students without mysteriously missing the second the mascot shows up, Spiderman-style?

I noticed a lot of posts talking about protagonists recently and i wanted to see more of your fan-gan protagonsists that you're creating.

The protagonists of my fangan has no ultimate talent, he is a monitor from the reserve course thats helping a teacher monitorate the Ultimate's from the class he's working with.

His main objective through the normal daily life in the prologue is unite the class with a school trip, that goes wrong in some part of it and the killing game starts

In generall his position as a monitor is no mere coincidence, he is supposed to be a figure of help and admnistration of the class necessities, and he is a bit older than most of the cast because of it ( but not that much. He's two years older generally ). He's a very careful and atentious person, using his position to make always alnkst everyone in class confortable.

He believes the Ultimates are lonely and could benefit from coming together and teaming up more, which is why he is putting together the trip.

Through the killing game, his sense of responsability and security will create a change that start indirectly weakening other important traits of his personality, this will be the focus of his development

His hair and silhouette is of someone relatively tall, a bit on the slimmer side, but not that much, always holding some notes and with a bit messy circular hair that has an type of propeller shape on the back, with one blade up and the other down ( but its hair ).

His hair will probably be a darker tone of blue.

So I’m planning to do my very own Fangan.
But I’m struggling on ideas for ultimates so if anyone has any ideas that be great.

I have some advice I want to share, but I don't want to post it out of nowhere. I believe I'm able to help in certain aspects, but don't have a track record to prove it. I also struggle with personal advice, so the best I can do is general advice, hence why I want to make a post about it. Would it be weird to do so?

One thing I've noticed about fangans is that most are set in Japan. To be honest, of the fangans I've seen, only Project Eden's Garden wasn't set in Japan. Which isn't a problem, since everyone creates their own story the way they want, but as someone writing their own fangan for fun, I've realized something: writing a fangan that isn't set in Japan opens up a wide variety of possibilities for characters and their talents. For example, the fangan I'm writing has a character named Bruno Mendes, the Ultimate Capoeira Practitioner. Of course, it would be possible for a Japanese character to have this talent, but it wouldn't make as much sense or have as much meaning as a brazilian being the ultimate capoeira practitioner. In that sense, I think having different settings for fangans would offer a good opportunity to explore other cultures.

I plan to mention, briefly, some famous brands and bands in my fang, such as YouTube, Kick, Nirvana, etc. I would also like to use a rock song lyric in a concert scene in my fangan. Could this cause any problems?

I drew this after imagining Kaede's beta designs having purple hair. I'm not the biggest fan of what I did for her design, especially the colors, but IDK i made this in less than an hour.

I have a few name ideas (Kana Kurogane, Yoko Kurosaki, Koharu Dazai) but that isn't really relevant LOL.

I just have. No idea. What her Ultimate could be.

Theoretically, I make a fan-game, and decide to add a little Easter egg, with Makoto, I will address him by full name and design, will I get in to legal problems because of it ?
