Breaking into the industry

Hey everyone,
I’m 24 and looking to get into the UK TV, film, or live broadcasting industry, aiming for entry-level Runner or Location Marshal roles. I already have relevant experience for these roles, but my only set experience so far has been working as an extra.
Just wanted some honest advice on a few things:

1 Saturation: Is it worth trying to get in right now, or is the entry-level market completely oversaturated with the current state of the UK industry?

2 Experience: Since professional sets don't do "volunteering" due to minimum wage laws, what are the best legitimate ways to get those first few credits on a CV?

I shot a solo coffee spec ad with a minimal setup. Would love some cinematography feedback!

Heyaaa!!

I’m an India-based filmmaker, and I created a solo spec commercial for Blue Tokai coffee. Since I was working all alone, I ended up wearing all the hats—writing, lighting, shooting, editing, and even acting in it myself.

Given my limited resources, my main goal was to see how much production value and mood I could squeeze out of a very small setup. I really tried to focus on intentional framing, cinematic lighting, and visual storytelling to set the right atmosphere.

Here is a quick look at the tools I used to bring it together:

The Gear:

Nikon Z6III paired with a 28-75mm f/2.8 lens.

Kept the lighting simple with a Godox SL60W and a tiny Hiffin 7W.

The Look (Post-Production):

Cut and finished entirely in DaVinci Resolve.

Used Dehancer for the color grade, aiming for a cinematic feel with a Fujifilm 3513 emulation.

I’m really looking to grow as a visual storyteller, so I would genuinely love to hear your thoughts. Whether it’s about the lighting choices, the pacing, or the overall vibe—please don't hold back on the constructive criticism!

(I've also attached a few of my favorite stills above so you can see the framing!)

ps- This isn't my work. I posted this on behalf of u/date_007. He's new to reddit, doesn't have enough karma and still finding his way through this app (I mean- reddit can be intimidating for beginners- there's just so much going on hehe). So I figured that I'd post for him :). Happy watching!

Work international

I’m Tim, 24 years old from Austria, and I’m trying to get more into the international film industry. I’ve already worked on short films, music videos, documentaries, commercials and festival projects as Director, DOP, Editor, AC and Grip. Some of my projects were even selected at international festivals. To be honest, the Austrian film industry feels pretty limited and difficult to break into sometimes, which is why I’m looking more internationally. I’m mainly searching for connections, advice, opportunities, or just people who are passionate about filmmaking. I’m fully ready to work my way up from the bottom even if it’s just getting coffee on set. I would take every opportunity I can get, even if it means jumping on a plane for just two days to help out on a production somewhere.

If anyone has tips, contacts, Discords, productions looking for crew, or recommendations on how to get more into the international scene, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks a lot!

AMA with Artistic Director of New Orleans Film Festival. May 13 1pm - 3pm ET

Hey r/FilmFestivals!

I’m Clint Bowie, Artistic Director of the New Orleans Film Society.

Every year I review hundreds and hundreds of films from around the world for the New Orleans Film Festival, French Film Festival and other NOFS programming initiatives. The New Orleans Film Festival is Oscar-qualifying in the Animated Short, Documentary Short, and Narrative Short categories. Last year we had 5 alums on the Oscar shortlist and one (The Devil is Busy) nominated for Best Documentary Short. We’ve also been on MovieMaker Magazine’s Top 50 Film Festivals Worth The Entry Fee for 15 years running!

Join me for an AMA on r/filmfestivals Wednesday, May 13 from 1–3 PM ET.

I’ll be talking about:

  • what makes a submission stand out
  • programming strategy
  • festival trends
  • navigating the festival circuit
  • AI in film and film submissions
  • dealing with rejection

As a thank-you to the community, we’ll also share an exclusive $10 FilmFreeway submission discount code during the AMA.

Looking forward to your questions and conversation.

Fatigued trying to get work

Hi all,
I have moved to London from Australia to follow my dream of working in the industry. I have a previous career and I’m trying to make this career change but am having no luck. I’ve applied to every agency in talent or PR or film studios or literally anything and I’ve not had a single reply. I want to do something, anything. Set PA, office admin, talent agent assistant - I’ll do it.
Any advice?

Previous career was working as a lawyer. I’m 28 so I worry I’m too old to start over here…
