My first river monsters experience - The skate. Tasmania’s ‘thylacine of the sea’ which is on brink of extinction.

This was a catch and release of a critically endangered species. The skate is such a beautiful creature.

I feel privileged to catch and release such a critically endangered species.

Hope you all enjoy.

RWD sedan - Can it tow and launch a tinny?

Hey, just wondering if a ford falcon sedan rwd is capable of towing and launching a tinny, max 4m, on a boat ramp. Thinking of getting a boat, but can’t find much on rwd sedans on boat ramps, possibly for a reason 😅. Mainly just wondering about launching and retrieving, reckon it will be fine or will it end up in the drink?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Winter Longtail, and lessons on barbs

Almost lost my first Longtail tuna when it pulled hooks right at my feet. I had crushed barbs as I was doing a lot of catch and release, but I really wanted this one. Nearly went in, but managed to land it.

Went back the next week in search of similar again, with fresh hooks and barbs intact. I’d just spent 10 minutes waiting out the breaks to retrieve a snagged X Rap, when of course a handful of casts later it gets stuck fast again. My lack of patience and desire to remain dry drove me to grip the leader and yank it out.

I spent the subsequent 15/20 minutes learning why crushed barbs might not be so bad after all.

After finally getting that big bastard through the other side of my skin and crushing it, the hook slid out like butter…. Maybe I need the barbs after all. This lesson is a slippery bugger.

Buying an EV

Hi all,

Buying a new “fishing” car, EV to avoid FBT. Want something that’ll be great for carting surf rods and rod tubes of 2m internally along with various buckets, tackle boxes etc. Also need it to be comfy for the humans. Happy to spent to the top of the LCT threshold… what would you buy? Only a few EV utes in Aus and mostly not particularly comfy inside (looking at you, Toyota). I could get a bottom-spec Kia Ev9, a new VW combi, or one of the Chinese SUVs of decent size. What have you got for all your bulky fishing gear? Without the tax incentive, I’d likely just go for a Prado.

Rod combo options

Ive been fishing for years and I had a light to medium rod and its starting to wear out and im also starting to want some bigger fish like kingfish, snapper, tuna etc.

And I am thinking of buying a Daiwa Saltist 23 Spinning Rod 7ft PE3-4 and with a Daiwa Saltist MQ Spinning Reel 8000-H.

Do you think this is a good combo?

Budget Mineral glass polarised sunglasses

Anyone got any recommendations for glass lens sunnies?

Just lost a pair of spotters that I’ve had for a few years, wasn’t a massive fan of the fit, but the lenses were fantastic.

Anyone know of any types of glass lens sunglasses that don’t break the bank, or am I stuck forking out $350?

Is this worth anything? V2

G'day guys,

Some of you might remember a post I put up here a while back about a fish ID app I'd been building in my spare time after my son goes to bed. The response honestly blew me away, and a heap of the feedback from that thread ended up in the app.

One bit of feedback kept coming up was that knowing what the fish is doesn't help much if you don't know where to find them in the first place.

So i've built that as a feature and included it.

You pick a species, or just ask what’s biting, choose your area and the day you’re heading out, and it suggests 3 fishing spots worth a look. It factors in tides, wind and moon phase for that day, then pins the spots on a map so you're not left guessing where the spot actually is.

Obviously though, anyone who's fished their local water for 20 years will know holes no app ever will.
Which is honestly why I'm posting. Would you use this? If you know your water, I'd love to know whether the spots it picks for your area pass the sniff test and what is it missing in your opinion?

What would it need to earn a spot on your home screen?

I'm not a company, it's still just me, and Any honest feedback is appreciated, brutal or otherwise.

Bit confused on whether this area is fisheable or not

The barangaroo bend here has signs on slide 2 that says no fishing but the sign on slide 1 indicates you can fish if responsibly?

Anyone else had this problem with their reel?

I got this reel, had for a couple months bought as a combo with rod, its a Diawa luxel LT 3000-C. the problem (as shown in the video) is when the drag is under lots of pressure it just slips and gives in and goes really loose, also sometimes when the drag has been tightened it needs to be pulled hard to get to its proper drag setting. This would be a big problem if fighting a big fish . Is there a way to fix this at home or do I have to send it off to be repaired because I can’t find the receipt. Thanks

edit: I think it started after I dropped it partially in saltwater but I quickly poured freshwater over it and cleaned it after, I also clean it properly after every session.

Lost a monster calamari right at the edge because of the swell... or did I?

Honestly, my heart completely shattered into a million pieces during this.

Was battling this absolute unit of a calamari, and right when we got it to the edge, a massive swell hit. It slipped off and dropped right back into the water. This happened multiple times—just an endless loop of hope and pure despair. I was 100% convinced that this beast was gone for good.

Huge shoutout to the legendary Chinese fishos who were next to me! They were incredibly helpful, stayed super calm, and kept trying to scoop/gaff it for me despite the sketchy waves.

Watch till the very end to see if the fishing gods blessed us or if I’m just crying over spilled ink. 😂🦑

It was off the rocks at Kurnell Point

Fishing stories

I have recently, the past year or two, got into fishing to reconnect with tihe ocean after stopping surfing. When ever I tell someone about my latest fishing experience usually when they ask. They always have a story along the lines of. Well my mate down the road brothers mate caught x fish off x spot . Why do they do that. Some of these people haven't had a cast for years.

Dunked my saltist

Went to some very shallow sand flats last weekend and hooked a chonky turtle. Because the flats were so shallow it would have been a trek to drop gear back on dry land. And surprise surprise I dropped rod trying to unhook them. Gave it a couple rinses but it’s developed a scratchy feel on half a rotation of the crank. Reckon I send it in for a service already or see if it gets any worse?

What is the single best fish you have ever landed?

Nothing I've landed has really been a standout yet. Hopefully that day comes sooner rather than later.

What is the actual point of heavy beach rods?

I'm looking for experiences from people who use these rods. I'm a pretty keen beach fisherman and have some good experience fishing off the beach. I've noticed that there are rods that can cast up to 300 g, but as many people know, casting a weight over 200 g is pretty difficult and actually requires a lot of strength. The kind of strength that I think most people don't really have. They may be able to cast them, but I would say using 80% of your technique to cast a 200g weight vs 100% to cast a 150g. You'd be better off casting 150g.

At a certain point, the weight is so not aerodynamic that there are really diminishing returns with having that kind of stopping power. Unless you're fishing for sharks, in which case you'd probably be using potentially a shorter rod anyway, because you're kayaking the baits out. What exactly is the point of having such heavy rods when the beach is light? Are these really just rock fishing rods that actually have a completely different purpose? Does anyone actually use these?
