Rat, Snake, and Skunk Essences

Jason was going to give his brother these essences, and that made me start thinking about the potential powers, which lead to me postulating that they’d create a Chimera Confluence and result in another afflictions-based power set.

Thoughts?

Trauma Appreciation

I know I’m a newcomer to the series as I’ve been working through different LitRPGs. Wrapping up Book 4 today.

One thing I’ve loved about the series is that when hurts happen, just like in life, there’s no essence or potion to heal everything back the way it was. The hurts, they stay with you.

I’m sure I’m not the only one, but speaking as someone dealing with his own library of trauma, especially family trauma, book 4 hits hard with the “ouch I feel that!” But also the bittersweet feelings of hope & longing for the remaining relationships to be what you need them to be.

Nothing but respect to Shirtaloon

Just finished book 12 and now there’s a hole in my life!

What’s next for me? I drive a lot and listen to audio books. Love Eragon, really enjoyed He who fights with monsters, thinking of Dungeon crawler Carl next. Keep in mind I listen with my 6 and 9 year old.

Clive and the other low rank magical researchers make no sense

Obviously Clive is higher rank NOW, but the fact that he was doing ground breaking research at iron rank makes no sense. Not that he isn't smart enough to do it, but the books explain that as you get higher in rank your intellect goes up and you literally get smarter. If your physical capabilities from normal rank to silver evolve that drastically, then mentally, it has to be like going from a smart guy to a genius. And we know that there are plenty of silver and even gold rank researchers in the magic society doing work as well.

What is really weird is that all of these high ranking people call Clive a 'monster' for how intelligent he is and even go as far as basically imprisoning him to work non-stop. Even if he is a genius by normal rank standards, shouldn't an intelligent silver ranker still be significantly more intelligent?

The way the mental attributes advance just doesn't make much sense to me.

(book 3)Not a great audio book

Im starting to feel really frustrated with the audio book. I really don't need everyones power explained to me everytime they use it. I remeber what the things do. Even if I didn't just tell me what it does by showing me how it effects the monster. I feel like this would be a non issue on text because I could just skip it. Im on book 3 and they are back in the astral space fighting a lot of monsters and it just feels like every fight is such a slog because I have to constantly listen to the narrator explain for the hundredth time what somebody's power does. Overall I am enjoying the books a lot but that is really getting to me and making me feel like I need you to slow down on the series and read it on my Kindle or something.

Jason Asano is Magical Forrest Gump

Just had this realization this morning in the shower.

Jason Asano is Magical Forrest Gump.

He ends up in the middle of all of the most important events, pivotal to their outcomes, all while meeting the most influential people.

>!Plus anyone who he cares about dies basically.!<

Spirit Coins - Downer’s Grove Event

Hey everyone! I am very excited that Shirtaloon is doing a book signing event in the Chicago suburbs next month. I created my own Jason Spirit Coin, and will be handing some out to fellow fans in line. In case you are 3D printing enthusiasts as well, I do have the file I created available on Maker World. I will see about putting the link in the comments.

Adventure Society Founding Date?

As the title. Does anyone recall if there's ever a reference to how long the Adventure Society has been around? A few hundred years? A thousand?

Is Jason's essence decision a bit.. rash?

Just picked up this series and am really hooked - such a fun, unique magic system! I gotta say though, can you imagine making your permanent essence choices so hastily? Coming from someone who spends an inordinate amount of time on character creation screens in RPGs, I'm screaming internally for Jason to take some time to study possible synergies before making such a momentous decision hah.

Halfway through book 5. Favorite aspects of the series?

No one I know reads these books and my wife is sick of me talking to her about them 🤣. I’ll go first I really enjoy the depth of the magic system. Came to these books after finishing Dungeon Crawler Carl, so I am very appreciative of a more in depth true magic system. What yall got??

Unique Characters/ Powers

Were there any characters/powersets in the story youd be curious to know more about? Or came up with your own original characters?

Could be as vague as a offensive portal specialist or a healer with the Phoenix confluence, its just so fun theorizing unique powersets and seeing what people come up with!

Cassandra Mercer stands out to me with the pure+visage+magic»fae essences

I've also been reading Rising Kite, a fan made story set in pallimustus before Jason arrives, to cure my book 12 hangover and there's some sick characters in there (shout out Serene).

TheMagicEngineer also has a fun video, theorizing his own OC!

How does resistance stack?

How does Jason’s resistance stack? If he downs for example a cup of poisoned tea in one go will he have one instance of resistance, as opposed to a bunch of instances if he slowly sips it? At what point do his resistances say “okay dude you are just messing with us” and stop applying from the same cup of substance?
