New to RPG developement? some thoughts on starting your adventure.

What does level up mean for your game?

A question seen a lot, so for budding developers take a minute and think about it. Many games grow laterally and not just up in power, others give a bit but focus more on survival instead of power.

Call of Cthulhu,

Blades in the Dark,

Mutants and Masterninds.

Three games that while (some) allow power increase, focus more on lateral growth and role play mechanics.

The core gameplay loop. This will make or break a system and will define the game as much as the setting. Players will be continually engaging in the core loop and this will determine many aspects of play. how to gain skill levels, how loot effects characters, risk vs reward.

In Call of Cthulhu your main goal is to survive to slow down the apocalypse, in BiTD it's a heist game, your working on bettering your crew and getting stuff (money). In M&M your a hero (or villain) and you play at a power level that befits the role, you grow laterally and in some cases you can grow more powerful.

What is your game about? what are the goals of the player's characters? what is play supposed to feel llike? these are key questions we can't really answer for you.

Resolution mechanics help with the feel, find one you like and start there. Answer those questions and see where it leads you.

Game developement is not as easy as it seems and with experience it's not as hard. The more systems you have had exposure to the more information you'll have when deciding on what you want in a system.

You need these things to make an RPG,

1 Setting; note while there are systems designed as setting agnostic, this is still a setting. Other settings but not limited to, Fantasy, Dark, Victorian, Apocalyptic, Heroic, Anime, Cyberpunk, Space, High Techology, Heist, Historical, Pirates (mmm space pirates), Giant Robots, and many others..

2 Core Gameplay Loop (CGL); be it levelling, getting stuff, survival, hunt the monster, save the prince / princess.. can be anything, can be many things.

3 Resolution mechanics, a framework that players use to complete the CGL this can include Dice, cards or tokens etc.. and the rules for how characters interact with the setting.

For those who know, feel free to add what you feel is most important to designing an RPG system.

Together we can build worlds!

Have a few chaos cultists from 40k and am looking for advise to how cultists are in Necromunda or if there is a group that fits the 'old' cultists from 40k better?

Just finished the tutorial? read this.

Long story short, the galaxy is big, lile really really big, there are mysteries, mining, exploration, pirates, aliens and more. Some tasks are more fun then others while some tasks not so much and you've just begun!

You should dip your toes into everything the game has to offer, especially engineering. Lots of lore and fills the next phase of the tutorial.

Always keep enought credits to rebuy your ship!

Sites that are helpful!

all kinds of tidbits, tricks and activities.

https://inara.cz/elite - Trade, locations of modules, ships, etc..

You've completed the tutorial and need cash!

Get a DSS and scan planets while doing courier missions, easy cheap money.

Exo-Biology is also good place to start.

You'll want a decent explorer ship, with some engineering of the jump drive, go to any station, pick up an artimis suit (has the equipment needed) and go search planets.

Apps that help - https://edcodex.info/?m=tools&entry=590

This when you scan a planets (full system scan) will tell you what planets have life and what they are.

If you head about 500ly to 1000 ly from the bubble you'll find undocumented (not scanned) systems, these will be the ones to check.

This unengineered DBX is a good start build.

If you can engineer (have the mats) I recommend engineering the FSD SCO drive as it will bring you to 60+ ly jump range.

Great beginning exploration / exo biology build.

FYSA - App freezing? Try portrait mode

Saw a post about the app freezing (thnx google) checked it and saw a lot of people with the same issue.

I did some testing and found a workaround to use while Audible works of fixing it.

Freezing seemed to be focused in landscape mode, so rebooting and having my a16 in portrait mode, the app started functioning properly.

I will note - turning to landscape mode while app is in the forefront (on screen) will break it again.

Portrait mode works, there are still a few quirks but it works.

Enjoy!

Rescue missions

With the Lynx, you can now get rescue missions from systems under war and pirate attack.

The factions at war or under attack will provide the missions and the payout is the same as the ones from the CG (same requirements).

Rescue missions are now a viable earning loop.

Soon we'll see Powers pushing systems to war just to farm these refugee's.

(Edit) this includes planet side stations as well!

Seems Like Carlos stole another ship.

Wheres my stuff question, well heres your answer!

For immediate cash you can collect it at the CG provider.

Physical rewards are delivered a couple days after.

Please note, you do not need to collect the CG rewards at all, they all will be delivered automatically once the CG is cleared - The thursday tick AFTER it has completed.

There is no need to ask why you didn't get your reward, just wait amd it will be courierd to your location no matter where you are.

Automatic Distribution: If you do not visit the station within two weeks of the CG's end, credits are automatically added to your balance, while physical rewards usually remain in storage indefinitely.

Modules will be available for pickup at the CG station from YOUR stored modules area.

This CG you have 4 stations to choose to goto, I like Sabine myself.

Faction rep increases the mission quality and opens up those 50 mil missions. You can grind this at the surface ports via regular missions and CG combat missions.

You can also store passenger modules at any of the damaged stations, this will allow you to swap from economy to business quickly opening up mission selection and giving better chance of being ready to swap for those 50 mil missions.

Do with this what you will, I certainly like credits and this makes it much more efficient having the ability to swap modules.

Remember each faction at allied will add higher reward missions - credits and those amazing G4/5 mats.

Also note many of these missions you will want an SCO drive to make the distance to the target station if you get drop offs for 78k Ls like the last one I just did.

Cheers!
