Is this tile work as bad as I fear or am I overreacting? What to do next?

I hired a one-man team to reno my only bathroom. He had good referrals locally, has been pleasant and thorough in communication so far, and seemed confident in his ability to execute the agreed scope.

Ignoring the haze, which should wipe away when he wraps up tomorrow, there are several things here that make me very uncomfortable with the work. Generally, it does not look neat or precise, but here are some specific aspects of the install that I worry may be bad and need reworking/redo:

  1. The tiles that meet the lookers left edge of the tub are not flush with the wall. Is this ok in this scenario? Wouldn't the hardie board behind we square to the tub edge to ensure a flush install of the wall tile?
  2. There is a tile near the floor on the corner by the sink plumbing that extends beyond the wall on the other side of the corner. Is it typical not to trim the tile to meet neatly at the corner?
  3. The scope listed that they would use Ditra decoupling membrane under the floor tile. I see only hardie board. Am I missing something and is this acceptable? The tiles are not level, and some are out of level enough to stub a toe.

Am I overreacting? Is there any remedy besides having someone else come in to redo? They are coming back tomorrow to clean up the tile work and install fixtures. We have paid him roughly 50% of the estimate cost (it was a detailed estimate with ranges in cost per line item) and I cannot imagine paying a cent more given what I am seeing here.

Thanks in advance for thoughts/suggestions/advice.

EDITs!!! -

  1. The grout is red, which we requested. He claims he needed to let it finish drying overnight before wiping down since the pigment kept running when he ran the sponge over it after the first few hours of setting/drying.

  2. If anyone with the interest and skill to help me out of this mess does work in Northern New England (US), please DM me. I would love to chat.

  3. For those who want to see an update and help me decide what to do as far as recourse, I added a comment below with things cleaned up a bit. Grout is still not really set so wiping down just makes it seep more pigment at this point. Not sure if this grout sucks or he didn’t work with it correctly.

Wanna See something scary? Battery room I came across as a professional installer.

This battery room was created as a project - none of the wiring is color coded, none of it is the same gauge. None of it is labeled. The ONLY good thing is its in a building that if it burned down wouldn't hurt anyone.

Stepdad refuses to ask for help with plumbing, so my mom super glued the drain herself

Drain went out. My stepdad's solution: more caulk. Didn't work. Did he call a plumber? No. Did he try a different approach? No. Just more caulk, like the first round just didn't have enough conviction behind it. Same with the toliet, first picture is the leaky toliet he 'fixed'. it just needed a new wax ring.

When that failed, my mom took matters into her own hands and tried super glue. It held for a while. Then it didn't.

I ended up doing a road trip just to fix it myself, because at that point it was either that or my mom keeps washing dishes around a drain held together with glue and good intentions.

Bankrupt Solar Panel leasing company

I saw that the panel was lifted off of the ground.

I should note that this is not my house.

I went up to inspect it and I found that almost half of the fasteners were improperly installed.

This company showed up one year, installed these on a bunch of houses, and then went bankrupt.

I'm about to make a public service announcement video to tell people to go and check these.

Had a plumber fix a leak and this is the ceiling patch he did

I had a plumber fix a leak, and this is what he did patching the hole. You can see there are still seemingly soft spots in the old dry wall that he didn't cut out also.

I'm trying to learn and do more things myself, can I unscrew this and put in a proper drywall patch on my own?

Were the bricks knocked out by air conditioner installers structural?

- aircon installers knocked out these 3 holes to get the ducting from the pitched roof to flat roof extension, then we’re thinking I’d put 1 bulk head over each of the 3 holes.
- I was concerned that roof rafters were now unsupported so I’ve since had it rebricked and then replastered etc.
- the new approach I’ve proposed is an external duct

The aircon installer assures me the way they knocked out the bricks was common practice and correct for this setup, is that right?

Wooden wall slats FUBAR

I got the wooden wall slats installed by a contractor on the living room TV wall. The contractor started working from both sides and tried to align them in the middle, which has broken the continuity of lines (you can see two lines are adjacent to each other at the top which is breaking the symmetry and flow). The contactor is now recommending a complete overlay on top of the existing slats, with some kind of covering at the edges. But I don't trust that he will be able to manage the alignment with the pitch and substrate. What options do I have? Can I just rip this out (some kind of adhesive was used) and get them redone with new slats through another contractor?

Not happy with how this turned out

Second pic was my inspo, first pic is how my living room ceiling looks now. My bff brought her husband over to hang this light for me. I appreciate their help but I don't quite like how it looks. I added the plant on a whim and I also don't think it looks great. I'm stuck with it for a while because I told my friend that I love it, but I might rearrange the living room sometime next year and I think I'll get rid of the ceiling light entirely.

My friend's husband suggested that I buy some faux ceiling medallion to cover the hole which I'll do over the weekend.

Looking for suggestions on how to make this look better without changing the setup for now. TIA

Edit - thanks for your feedback. I've decided to call an electrician and ask for the cord to go inside the ceiling. I'll also get rid of the plant. I'll post here as soon as it's done. I appreciate all the kind comments!

Space between range hood and cabinet question

We moved into a house that already had a range hood installed under the upper cabinets. There’s a noticeable empty space above it, and we originally assumed the previous owner just didn’t install a proper over-the-range microwave setup, which is why it looks unfinished.

Now I’m realizing something: I might be misunderstanding how these are supposed to work.

It seems like because of vent placement, mounting height, and stove clearance rules, an over-the-range microwave (slim or regular) might actually sit in basically the same position as a range hood.

So now I’m wondering:

  • Do OTR microwaves and range hoods basically mount at the same height anyway?
  • Is that empty space above the unit still there with microwave as well?
  • Or is there actually a setup that would “fill” that space more and look more built-in?

I feel like I’m overthinking this, but I just want to know if swapping to a microwave will actually change anything visually or if the gap is just part of the design no matter what.
