[VENT] Jdrama open-ended endings

I feel the need to vent about how Jdramas end their series, especially the romance arcs. Titles discussed: Proposal Daisakusen, Destiny, You can’t expense this, Tagusari bros.

The first time I had this experience was with Proposal Daisakusen a lifetime ago. But back then it felt like a mature decision, okay, let the audience decide what happens. We kinda get what happened — not in our face but it felt interesting.

But lately I’ve been watching series with romance elements like Destiny, You can’t expense this, which romance arc is not closed properly. It feels like the romance arc was not closed properly just for the sake of being… different. So many environmental elements and character developments were definitely preparing us for a happy closure and we are deprived of it. Like we watched an entire series made out of accommodations and compromises made for a birthday party and the camera cuts when the birthday person was in front of the venue, like what?

I didn’t get as pissed with Tagusari bros’ non-explicit ending though.

Sorry if this is a lot I am just pissed.

What are your thoughts on Iryu: Team Medical Dragon?

Did you all like it and watch it all the way through or did you think it wasn't worth the watch and you abandoned it?

Badly in love in japan

I saw a post here that mentioned that the show is receiving backlash in japan. Does anyone know how bad it is? I honestly disagree on the fact that the show would influence others to start having tattoos and smoking, i think it is a matter of person value.

What types of dramas are you watching this week? Is it from this season or from the past?

Feel free to recommend or ask for new shows this thread as well!

Human vapor

Watching human vapor on Netflix season 1 episode 3. There is a scene where a wierd yakuza guy with thin eyebrows asks his dad if they could have a parfinee. Cursory google search didn't yield a result that made sense. Can anyone help explain what it is and why they father and son haven't done it in 3 years? Is it something that is lost in translation? I am watching the dub.

Craving a vibey and mature Jdorama like First Love, Silent, etc.

Like the title says, I’m seeking my next Jdorama to watch with a similar feeling to First Love. I prefer Jdoramas that are more recent (within the past decade), with a focus on atmosphere / cinematography, and a more mature story (not goofy or comical, older than high school). Open to movie recommendations as well!

Here are my favourites so far:

First Love
Silent
Nevertheless: Shapes of Love
Beyond Goodbye
My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday (movie)

Any recs are greatly appreciated!

Are these shows worth continuing?

I have started these shows, but I don't seem compelled to watch them till the end, so I wanted to know why I feel this way, or are these shows mildly mediocre and I am just picking up on it. Thank you in advance!

  1. Shinjuku Field Hospital: I didn't finish episode 2

  2. Heaven and Hell Soul Exchange: I didn't watch more than 18 minutes of episode 1

  3. The Science Club: I didn't finish episode 4 (I noticed that NHK dramas lul halfway through, but the lul for this hit me harder than Tokyo Salad Bowl, and before you ask, it's the ONLY other NHK show that I liked). I think this show is the MOST worth it out of the three to keep watching, but I am just trying to find a reason to continue it.

Create your own dorama

Sometimes I imagine myself writing my own K-drama, bringing my characters and situations to life, has that ever happened to you? Have you ever thought about a situation from your own life that would make a great story?

Trying to find a show I watched

Hi guys! I want to watch a drama I saw some time ago but I just can't remember what the full title was. Here's what I remember:

This took place in a very female dominated school where girls had the upper hand in basically anything. Our main girl was called Mariko and she had a best friend (in the show it was pretty clear her friend was in love with her and she was her protector in the series). It turned out there was this school legend. Basically a long time ago a girl named Mariko committed suicide because she was in love with a teacher and now her spirit picks a girl that has the same name as her and makes her the new Mariko sama while eliminating the other girls. There was a small club run by a guy (he turned out to be the one who was eliminating the girls) that studied the original Mariko's life. I think it was called "the White lily committee". That's all I can remember. If you happen to know what it was called, I'd be very thankful.

Bye!

A Sleeping Forest (1998), also known as Nemureru Mori, is underrated

There's not much discussion of it online, but this is one of Kimutaku's all-time best dramas imo. I just finished it a few days ago.

There's something from the mystery it tells, to the music, to the script itself that is very nostalgic. Not to mention the dark angle of the drama itself.

Would highly recommend. If you have watched, please discuss below in spoiler tags when necessary.

learn japanese using jdrama

I learned Spanish using television, watching series and movies, and now I want to learn Japanese. I already know several sentences and can hold a normal conversation, but I want to improve. Anime isn't helpful since they exaggerate a lot when they speak. Now I've decided to watch Japanese dramas. I'd like recommendations for Japanese romance dramas. I've already seen "an uncrable case of love" and "Kissing the Ring Finger."

Recs like Kimi no petto and Last cinderella? Affectionate, cute ml

I also liked anegro, but it was very boring for me as it really focused on her career life mostly. I love the role reversal trope with younger ml and also when they're very affectionate and open about their emotions, or emotional(like closest love to heaven/ kira). Also would prefer it to have intimate scenes along with a handsome ml. It doesnt matter how old, pls give me recs?

why are jdramas filmed like that?

okay this is strange and really just a nothing burger observation but i’m curious if maybe someone knows about it. but ive noticed that most of the jdramas i watched are filmed in a way that’s different from kdramas or any other standard american drama show. i think it has something to do with the frame rate they are filmed at and maybe how they light the scenes. the best way i can maybe pinpoint to what it reminds me of is like it’s a youtube vlog footage. i don’t know if im making sense but hey 🌚 and it’s not all of them but it’s enough to make me wonder.

i’m currently watching until the tshirt dries and that’s what made me think of this.

Looking for slapstick comedy J-drama recommendations!

Hey everyone! I'm in the mood for some good slapstick comedy dramas — think physical comedy, over-the-top reactions, exaggerated slapstick humor, that kind of chaotic energy.

I've enjoyed shows with that vibe before and want more! Bonus points if it also has some heart or a fun ensemble cast.

What are your go-to recommendations? Thanks in advance! 🙏
