The issue of how faithfully to reproduce the actual vehicle when manufacturing N-gauge models.

There has been some recent debate regarding the accuracy of Micro Ace’s 719 series and TOMIX’s 9600-type steam locomotive models. For the 719 series, the resting position of the windshield wipers differs between the 5000, 0, and 700 series variants, yet the models depict them all the same way; meanwhile, the 9600-type model is marketed as the "Hokkaido specification" but lacks the vertical piping on the cab that is characteristic of that version. In the past, TOMIX also faced criticism because the mounting position of the train radio antenna on their EF66-27 model was slightly off.

I weathered the EF65, EF66, and EF81 models, and painted details like the brake and MR hoses, steps, and insulators.

It looks incredibly realistic. It reminds me of the Suita Depot from a while back.

Kato Kontroller Part Deux

This is what I was asking about yesterday.

I wanted to be able to bolt the controller down along with the switches and maybe a second controller.

There is also room under the module for an 18650 or similar-size battery pack, so I could run a couple of small trains all day without needing AC power.

I opened it up and CA’ed 3x 8-32 blind nuts inside. While I was at it, I also changed the power input to a slightly different (that was a drop-in replacement) and that fits Eflite 12V power supplies of which I have a plentiful supply.

I also did a couple of other things as can be seen in the last pictures.

I would like to also mount the small Pocket Line controller on the right side, but I’m not delighted with how that cable sticks out etc.

This is good-enough for now and I will run it a bit to see how I like it before doing more.

How to attach Kato power pack and switches?

The switches have keyhole slots but they are mirror image of each other and won’t work normally.

And the power pack doesn’t seem to have any sort of mounting features whatsoever.

I thought of putting Velcro strips across the bottom but I’d prefer something neater.

Do any of you have a solution you like?

Glue what do you use?

Im putting together a Greenmax kit and I guess the glue I'm using has a long set up time because if I even look at it it falls apart. I'm using the Tamiya liquid glue, I do have the Crazy Glue CA variant of glue but that has no set up time meaning once you connect the part that's it they are connected forever. Got any suggestions on what I should use.

Tunnel portal test

Testing out the GreenMax double line tunnel portal. Had to use a 1/4” foam backer to cover the larger opening with the XPS foam. Next onto priming and attaching them. The sculpt a mold took a bit to dry but it finally dried enough to test. The tunnel only covers a quarter radius so I didn’t build in an access portal yet but was curious for a shorter tunnel if access portals are a must. Also do you guys ballast track inside tunnels or ballast up to the portals?

Is “coupler efficiency” a thing?

My current layout is 62” long.

The longest, straightest section had 183mm radius tracks at one end, 150mm radius on the other, and a Kato Compact turnout w a 150mm radius jog in the center.

Running a trains 22+ cars I end up with cars on both turns as well as the jog in the middle and there is very noticeable slowing.

I get that all those wheel flanges are rubbing against the sides of the rails, which creates friction etc, but this seems like an irreducible factor, so I’m not going to worry about it.

But since all the force pulling the train is transmitted through the chain of couplers, I’m wondering if one type of coupler is more efficient than any others.

I am using all Rapido couplers which I like fine, but it seems like maybe knuckle couplers with rounded surfaces might be more efficient than the square faces of the Rapidos ??

Has anybody tested this in any sort of rigorous way?

I think I'm going to have to add containers to this bookcase lol.

This is the new CASCO bookcase for KOKI I just received from RG-ROKKO. I thought I'd fill up the bookcase with KOKI but it looks empty I think I'm going to have to add some containers to fill it out. I'm also going to need another KOKI to fill in that empty slot.

Taking my deliveries of my "accidental" win on Yahoo auction!!

When I mean "accidentally" win, its in a good way. I was aiming for the EF64-1031 GrimReaper unit. Low price bidding, somehow no one is trying to compete. These 4 will be a nice addition for my layout.

Total noob to creating a layout but got some Kato unitrack sets and am slowly building around them.

Thought I’d share some early progress with anyone else considering jumping in. Made the bench work with 1x4’s and got a couple of pieces of 4x8’ xps pink foam board. Built the layout unglued to mark stuff off and now I’m to gluing pieces in and sculpting a bit.

Saw this NHK doc and I'm inspired.

Seeing the tracks this looks awesome. Is it possible to separate the track to do this sort of thing? If anyone has please send examples

A few items from RG-ROKKO showed up today.

Today I got a nice little package from RG-ROKKO. I got a new paper structure from TDF which is a first for me, It's an Undon shop. I received two Greenmax 308 KUMOHA 12 and KUMONI 13 kits. I haven't built a kit in a while so this'll satisfy my itch. I also received a CASCO bookcase that holds 16 KOKI. (Grey item on the bottom) I got some green insulators for my EH500. That's it for now hopefully they'll be more.
