Karavali and Gimmicks
Chaos erupted at Karavali trailer launch event. The main lead Prajwal Devraj was absent. There are 2 sides. Let me summarise:
- Prajwal Devaraj claims his remuneration is still pending so he refused to dub untill the full payment. Now the trailer has his voice dubbed.
- Few individuals who claimed to be Prajwal Devraj die hard fans obstructed the event for not having “annan voice” in the trailer.
- He clarified that the decision to use a dubbed voice was purely a creative choice to fit the character. He also stated that Devaraj's team had confirmed he would attend the launch until the night before, canceling only at the last minute.
Payments dues are to be questioned lawfully and ethically but is it right to create a mess during a trailer launch when bunch of people are depending upon the film’s release?
Who are these so called fans who were never to be seen before for PD’s earlier movies which bombed at BO and suddenly he has become a Anna now?
My predictions are these are the gimmicks the team is relying on to create a buzz. A week of time and we’ll see posts “everything is okay and sorted” posts on social media. Btw KVN is the production house so it could be usual trick as well.
REQUEST - If you are a Singer/Musician willing to collaborate with us for the KWM Poetry Event at Cubbon Park on Sunday, please comment/DM!

The Editor’s Manifesto: Practical Wokflow + Rule of Six.
The Editor’s Manifesto: Merging Practical Survival with Murch's "Rule of Six"
When you reach the limit of what you can achieve as a solo filmmaker, you quickly realize that owning the gear and mastering the post-production workflows is just the foundation. Stepping up to tackle high-concept narratives is to marry practical survival tactics in the edit bay with pure editorial theory (Walter Murch's Rule of Six).
The Prep & Workflow (Surviving the Nightmare of Arranging the Footage)
Watch every footage (at least twice): Do not skim your dailies. You need to know the raw material intimately before you lay down a single cut. The best micro-expressions are often found before action or after cut. I will often sit with a notebook and add clip markers to note down the important moments in the watch.
Organize ruthlessly: Metadata, rigid bin structures, and color-coded Clips (especially for audio) are mandatory. You should be able to find any alternate take instantly so you never kill the creative momentum of the scene.
a. This is how I arrange my tracks- v1 = Main video story
- v2= to cut over and add footage
- v3= For footage that needs to be there and not disturb the main story.
- V4 =. Adjustment layers, Mattes, special grades Etc.,
- Audio
- A1 = Main Dialogue
- a2 = Main Dialogue
- A3 = Main Dialogue
- A4 = Main Dialogue
- A5= Main Dialogue (My camera records 4 channel audio)
- A6 to A8 = SFX, folley and Sound design
- A9 to A12 = Music and Sound Tracks.
b. The audio track arrangement matters a lot as you will work track based when applying full track effects in mixer. Definitely want one character or type of dialogue all on one track, then SFX, then music. Even then when you have a longer project it is good to have seperate tracks as all the audio levels need indepedent effects and coordination.
c. For video it's a bit subjective, especially since you'll probably flatten it at the end. If it's an interview then I typically have my man angle at the bottom, second track has my alternative, 3rd track has B-Roll, 4th track has any graphic work and titles.
Never present a broken edit: The director-editor relationship is sacred. Fix the mechanics before you hit play.
Factor in disaster time: Software crashes, timelines corrupt, and exports glitch, render times, time spent searching for music tracks. Always pad your deadlines to account for technical friction.
The Cut (Applying Murch’s Rule of Six)
When deciding exactly where and why to make a cut, Murch argues you should prioritize these criteria in this exact descending order of importance:
- Emotion (51%) comes first: Does the cut reflect what you want the audience to feel at that exact moment? If you are watching a tense, psychological sequence back and find yourself thinking about something else or snacks, the tension is broken.
- Advance the Story (23%): Does the cut move the narrative forward? Cut for the scene, but always in the context of the larger emotional arc of the film. A brilliant scene is useless if it stalls the momentum.
- Find the Rhythm (10%): Does the cut happen at a rhythmically interesting moment? Pace shouldn't just be kinetic; it needs to breathe with the actors' cadence.
- Respect the Eye-Trace (7%): Guide the audience's focus. A seamless cut respects where the viewer is looking on screen and leads their eye naturally to the focus point of the next shot.
- Honor the Space (5% & 4%): Respect the 2D plane (the 180 degree rule) and the 3D spatial continuity of the action. However, Murch insists you should absolutely sacrifice spatial continuity if it serves the Emotion or the Story. Attempt edits that shouldn't work technically you'll be surprised by the magic you find.
The Polish (Sound & Experimentation)
- Prep your music early (and avoid the literal): Don't wait for the footage and then think about the tone and mood. Music builds the tone and mood. Build a library of evocative tracks early. When laying down temp score, avoid music that just mimics the cause-and-effect on screen; choose tracks that hit the underlying psychological subtext.
- Audio is the glue: Keep your temp atmospheric sound design minimal so you don't paint the final mix into a corner, but absolutely nail the dialogue leveling and practical effects. Good audio will completely mask a visually jarring cut. Also Let the sound designer do the creative play here.
Happy editing. :)
Still one of the most visually stunning Kannada films I've watched.
RangiTaranga surprised me with how well it blends mystery, suspense, and the beauty of the Western Ghats. The atmosphere, music, and final twist make it a film that's easy to revisit. If you could watch it again for the first time, would you?

Satluj and CBFC
Satluj(Punjab’95) is a story about activist Jaswant Singh Khalra who gathered evidence of mass unlawful killings by Punjab Police after assassination of Indira Gandhi. Khalra got abducted from outside his home by 6 police officers from Punjab and murdered in the police station.
Cbfc delayed certifying the film demanding 127 cuts and title change. However, the movie got released on Z5 after 2 years without cuts but later got removed after 2 days of OTT release.
- What exactly is the duty of CBFC?
- if Satluj has dancing car scenes like toxic, would it be treated differently?(stupid argument but visible bias is killing me)
- if Dhurandhar gets release with A certificate why can’t the same applied to Satluj or any such films?( paanch by Anurag Kashyap never seen a light of the day but a marathi movie
with same story starring Nana Patekar
- got released)
- is there any loophole like can we sell the rights to foreign studio and get it released outside India?
