The battery life thing...

I've been using a Karoo 3 for 2 years now (bundled with my S-Works). For the most part I really like it, but that battery life thing...let me explain.

Yesterday went on a 124 mile ride with bike spouse. As usual had my K3 charged up to 100%, using my Varia and so on, brightness at 7%.

We'd ridden for about 33 miles (SF Caltrain across Golden Gate Bridge, up Hawk Hill, Rodeo Beach and so on) and I checked the battery when we were at a coffee stop across from Larkspur Ferry Terminal and it had already gone down to 75% which is a pretty steep drop.

Usually I bring a little power pack in my jersey pocket so I can charge it up at lunch or whenever. As it turned out, I forgot to bring it with me yesterday.

I also had to use the map quite a bit.

Anyway by mile 61 (about half way through) we were at the top of Marshall Wall and checked the battery % again and I was down to 44%. OMG. I put it on Battery Save which helped some, but any time a car was behind me the screen would pop back on due to my Varia.

By the time we got to Point Reyes Station I was down to 17%. Again, didn't have my power pack.

I ended up turning the Varia off altogether and that helped a lot, fortunately I had my rear view mirror as a backup.

By the time I got back to the Larkspur Ferry Terminal I was down to 8% and I really needed to use the map because I had lost my way and the other riders were nowhere to be seen (although bike spouse was tracking me on WhatsApp). Ended up calling an Uber and getting a ride to Mikes Bikes in Sausalito where I met up with bike spouse (thankfully the driver had a charging cable so I got the Karoo up to 18% and without using the Varia or the map that was sufficient to make it back to SF Caltrain).

Don't get me wrong, I really love the K3, my eyesight is not the sharpest when it comes to reading and I find the sharpness and clarity of the Karoo screen much easier to read without reading glasses.

But as someone who regularly does mega long rides (125-200+ miles) every week, yesterday really brought home the issue of battery life, basically if I don't remember to bring a power pack with me, I'm screwed.

I googled last night and sure enough, the combination of the Varia + using the map = big battery drain.

Again, love the K3, except for the battery life.

This is mostly just a vent...bike spouse had a Karoo as well, liked it for the same reasons I like it, but got rid of it and got a Garmin 1040 Solar for the same reason I am now considering switching to Garmin.

I'm far from a genius but I'm not sure why Hammerhead, with their great customer service and support, can't make a Karoo Solar or something similar where I can use the features I want to use without having to worry about battery drain.

Calories not being shared with other apps

Hello all!
I shared this same text on the Hammerhead Forum looking for answers just in case devs are there.

I bought a Hammerhead Karoo 3 and I encountered an issue I never had before on my previous computers.

Today, i finished my second ride with Karoo and realized that in both of my rides, calories count weren’t shared with other apps.

Karoo: 1616cal
Strava: 1665
Intervals: 1623
Aura: 0 (meaning the app didn’t get that number)

As I said, this is not my first computer, but it’s the first time I have this issue.

What might be causing it?

Thank you!

EDIT: after looking some old threads and into my .fit file…
Looks like Hammerhead doesn’t share calories into their .fit files? Wtf?

Coordinates shown on device startup

When my Karoo starts up it displays geographic coordinates which translate to 43.9286°N, 2.1475°E in decimal format, which is the center of Albi in France. Anyone know what the significance of this is?

What happened to rerouting?

It took a while for me to write this post. But since a couple of months I’m having issues with the rerouting. If I have to take another route because of a blocked route the Karoo keeps sending me back to the original route. Only after several km it starts to accept I’m not going back. This feature used to be awesome when it showed me a new route straight away but somehow this became the rerouting like the first navigation systems did in the 2000s.

Did anyone else encounter this? Is there a setting I’m missing?

Sync not removing routes/collections from Karoo

I have removed a bunch of routes and collections from the Hammerhead Dashboard website. The removals synced fine to the iOS Hammerhead app, but they still show up on my Karoo. Adding new routes and collections syncs just fine, and they show up on the Karoo. Is this a known issue, or is there a trick to getting them removed?

To clarify, I know I can manually remove routes from the Karoo itself, but it is a tedious process, and I have dozens of routes to be removed.

Edit: The Hammerhead help page states, "You cannot make any changes to your collections from your Karoo. You have to perform that action on your Dashboard." But making changes to a collection on the Dashboard does not change the collection on the Karoo. This makes me think that there is either a bug or an issue with my device/setup.

Karoo 2 iPhone connection

I am trying to connect my Karoo 2 to an IPhone 16 pro with the latest updates, but the Karoo never shows up as a device to connect to. I tried on 2 other iPhones, and that makes me think that there is an issue on the Karoo side. Anyone else have this issue?

Random screen off with last update

Hi all - has anyone else experienced the screen turning off on their k3 randomly during a ride? It’s happened a couple of times in the last week. Do I have a hardware fault or is there a bug in the matrix??

As a Garmin user, any regrets?

I want to buy my first computer and seeing the Karoo most often is the recommended unit for navigation I wonder if this is the one I should get.

I collect all my data on Garmin otherwise, how do you handle that using another device? Do you also record the ride on the watch?

Thinking the Edge Explore 2 is a good deal, it's about 50% less.

Thoughts? Are you happy with the Karro? Should i shell out? =)

Karoo to Strava Import Problems

Hello guys, I recently noticed some problems with importing my Karoo rides to Strava.
Strava always shows about 30 watts less than my Karoo says after importing the rode to Strava.
For example my Karoo and my hammerhead app says I rode average 170 and normalized 200 watts, that’s what it says if I import it to intervals icu as well. But somehow Strava says the exact same ride I rode only 140 average and 170 normalized watts.
Is there anyone else with this problem, or ist there someone who had this problem and could fix it?
Thanks guys :)
