The 4th of July is over!!!

Gonna vent for a minute...The 4th of July is over! That means that the jack×××es who bought a small fortune worth of fireworks should now be taking everything they had left over from last night and cramming up their rear ends and lighting the fuse. A veteran friend of mine with severe PTSD chose to check himself into a mental health facility for the weekend rather than deal with this crap. My dogs are living their annual weekend of terror despite calming treats, melatonin and benadryl, and I have to go to work in the morning! I don't want to hear you light your firecrackers one at a time!

Maybe next 4th of July I'll just drive up in front of your house and put 10 rounds through your front window. That way you can understand what my dogs feel like. We live in a tinderbox and there is a statewide burn ban, so why TF are fireworks even sold in Las Cruces? Maybe next year will be the year all of those damn things are finally illegal and setting them off is a 3rd degree arson charge. Its certainly animal abuse to say the least.

Deadline Tomorrow

Please take a few minutes to voice your concerns about the gas line permit for Project Jupiter that they want to build THROUGH our communities! This is a really big deal and has so many negative impacts on all of us directly. Air, land, water, NOISE…all forms of pollution. This will lower property values that ripple out to all surrounding areas. There are too many negative impacts for a few “possible” positives. They are selling us a flying horse and a hand full of magic beans, and these out of state billionaires are the only ones set to benefit. We are virtually rolling out a red carpet to a deceptive predator to pillage our precious resources and poison our backyards. They aren’t building these centers in their backyards….THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A MOMENT!!!! They seek out poor communities FAR AWAY from their mansions…

3 Missing Cats

After a hard night of loud fireworks on the NMSU end of Solano, 3 of my outdoor cats are missing. They are part of a family of five "community cats" that I have cared for since they were born in my backyard, nearly 3 years ago. Momma cat (Miss B) and the 2 boys (Lil and Sugar) are the ones missing. We call them the triplets because they are all 3 tuxedo style, black over white.

The 2 girls took refuge in a spare bedroom they have access to through their catio on the patio. One of the girls (Grey) is still hiding under the dresser going on 24 hours and the other female, Shadow, seemed pretty much unaffected by all the noise, though she stayed in the bedroom all night.

One of my indoor males took refuge under the kitchen sink for hours.

I am not opposed to fireworks. I watched the NMSU display from my backyard and it was nice. But, there were people setting-off what seemed to be commercial grade (big, loud and certainly expensive) fireworks right over Solano (right next to my house and partially over my yard) and they were shockingly close and loud. It was way more than sparklers, Roman candles and spinning whistlers. I knew the cats were going to freak.

They'll probably be back and even every now and then, one of the cats will disappear for a day or 3. But, never has it been 3 cats at once. There are still some occasional fireworks tonight, but not too bad. Miss B (momma) never leaves the immediate area of the yard. She was basically feral and pregnant when she originally arrived to me. She was skin and bones. I nursed her back to health by feeding her every 4-6 hours around the clock for over 3 months to support her pregnancy and getting the kits weened.

My wife and I, both elderly, would be devastated if something happened to our cats, either hurt or scared to death. We're not freaking-out yet and we're not looking for any help looking for the cats or anything. But, I am acutely aware the cats are gone and I have been calling-out to them every few hours. They usually come when I call them because when I call, it is supper time.

If there is any interest in this post, I will keep you posted. Tomorrow, we'll start freaking-out.

Best place to donate used clothing?

I know of the big chains like goodwill and thrift stores etc. But are there any local organizations, shelters, or programs that accept/are looking for clothing donations that might be a better option?

Bribing, forging, lying: how Project Jupiter manufactures support

Blatant, lazy momfluencer payola. Paid canvassing campaigns that will forge your name onto a letter of support. And dangling basic services in front of residents that their city, county, and state are already legally obligated to provide.

This is how Project Jupiter is trying to manufacture support. Because they think we're stupid, desperate suckers.

New Mexico has a long history of being duped into hosting some of the world's most historically evil technological bullshit, then getting left with the expensive devastating environmental and health repercussions.

Not this time.

AI Data Center Projects Always Promise 200 Jobs While Communities Absorb Hidden Environmental and Control Costs

Data center developers consistently promise 200 jobs for major AI infrastructure projects. This enables rapid local approval which creates pathways for large-scale facilities that deliver far fewer permanent positions than claimed.

The same low figure appears across proposals involving Meta, Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI. The result is that communities accept major environmental burdens while receiving limited long-term employment and tax benefits that often flow elsewhere.

Private agreements and tax incentives frequently shield operators from full accountability for energy use, water consumption, and noise. This leaves individuals with higher utility costs and reduced local control over land and resources.

Proponents emphasize economic development and temporary construction work. Critics document that permanent staffing remains minimal and environmental impacts concentrate on host communities. Stronger transparency requirements and enforceable local protections are needed before additional projects advance. (98 words)

Someone said about Las Cruces: What do y’all think?

So a cousin told me that Las Cruces is more related to Dallas, Houston, and Austin compared to Phoenix since our demographics, education, diversity, and weather greatly is similar to Texas, but I disagree. I believe that Las Cruces is more similar to Phoenix since our weather is dry and “deserty,” and our diversity here in Cruces is more similar to Phoenix or Arizona in general compared to Dallas, Houston, or Austin or even Texas as a whole (except El Paso.) What do y’all think?

I know the Fourth is coming and it's a big deal, but I have a (not so) modest request.

First of all: I like the Fourth of July. It's my in-laws' wedding anniversary (this year is #50 for them!) and there's usually a good barbecue or picnic to be had. It's nice to celebrate what America came from and what it can be.

But we have to knock it off or at least restrain the hell out of ourselves when it comes to the personal arsenals that started going off on Monday and probably won't fully end until until mid-July because everyone stocked the hell up at Sam's Club and those tents that have become fixtures across the city. (Yes, that's an ugly sentence. Deal with it.)

Before you try to explode the entire sky this year, I want you to think about:

  • The dogs. Every single year, the lost-dog posts start rolling in on the morning of the 5th. That's not a coincidence. A firework next door is, to a dog, the sky cracking open for no reason it can understand, and a scared dog bolts. Our Griff has spent the last couple of Fourths wedged in our shower, shaking, and he's one of the lucky ones with a fence and a chip. (And some tranquilizers from the folks at Zia Vet Clinic.) A lot of dogs end up at the shelter. Some of them end up in the road.
  • The vets. There's a lot of them around here and for someone carrying (maybe undiagnosed) PTSD from a deployment, a string of explosions after dark triggers their nervous system and they're yanked back somewhere they've spent years trying to leave. If you know one and want to celebrate with booms, a heads up, or just knocking it off at a reasonable hour, goes a long way.
  • The folks with sensory issues. For a lot of autistic kids and adults, fireworks are instantly traumatizing and it can take days for them to feel normal again. Yes, there's headphones and sensory devices, but they can't be expected to wear them 24/7 all through the first half of the July.

Finally, and I can't believe I have to mention this to people who live in the desert with me, but we live in the goddamn desert. One spark in the wrong arroyo can become a very bad night for a whole neighborhood. Despite the way our local police don't seem to enforce it, aerial fireworks are already illegal inside city limits, whether or not drought conditions officially exist.

The valley does not need our help catching fire.

So here's my whole ask, and despite some of the comments I'm going to see, it's not "don't celebrate the Fourth and let the socialists shit all over your freedom."

  • Go to the free show at NMSU. Let the pros handle the aerial stuff.
  • If you just have to do your own, stick to legal "safe and sane" fireworks, on pavement, with a hose or a bucket right there.
  • Give your neighbors a warning, especially if you know there's a dog, a vet, or a kid nearby.
  • Wrap it up at a decent hour. Midnight mortars three nights running is how you become the villain of the subdivision.

That's it. Have a great Fourth, eat too much, hang out with your friends and family, go watch professionals blow shit up.

ETA: Thanks to everyone telling me to go to Facebook and see how "the general population" would react to this. It's very helpful! /s
