3 back to back emails this morning

Got a few emails this morning: "your payment is due soon", "your student loans have been placed into a forbearance", and "your repayment schedule has changed" in that order.

My payment is due 9/14 and it says I owe $160 based on the new repayment schedule document.

I login and I have no payment due. It says I've been placed in a forbearance for 2 years because I'm on the SAVE plan.

Does anyone have a clue what the F my account is supposed to be in?? I worked for a student loan servicer 15 years ago so I understand that interest is accruing in the forbearance but these 3 emails are incredibly confusing.

I'm gonna cry

Student loans have always been a mess but it has truly never been this bad. This is my 8th year paying my loans, I'm doing PSLF, I've been on an IDR plan since day one. Never missed a payment.

Applied to recertify my income on 7/1. Absolute radio silence. Nothing other than "a processing delay" of up to 90 BUSINESS DAYS. That's 5 months. November. Then I get a letter that they threw me into a standard repayment plan and want $2600 a month. Hahahahahaha. Hilarious.

I call and wait over an hour to get through. It's their first day on earth, they have no idea what's going on with anything and can't give me a time frame for my recertification. It's just so depressing and ridiculous.

Has anyone else had their plan recertified timely? They placed me into a 60 day forbearance which I truly did not want to have to do. She said "it should be processed by by then" lmao ok what if it's not?

What to do

I am not sure what to do. My 120 qualifying payments will happen in February 2027. I will have had my loans placed in SAVE forbearance since September 2024. I will have 26 total months that will be in forbearance. Depending on how they calculate my buyback that could be a hefty amount to buyback and my new IDR repayment is roughly $1200 per month. Do you just keep paying on my student loans beyond when my 120 qualifying payments are or do I try to buyback and hope my buyback is reasonable?

July payment

I switched plans to ICR from SAVE last month or at least tried to. I’m one of 6k who switched to the $50 a month plan and called into MOHELA to see what my payment was actually going to be- still the lowest even w/o it so i switched and didn’t think much of it. I had a monthly payment due that month on the 15th. Something went wrong with the auto pay so by the time I manually paid it, it was the 20th. I have a screenshot of my MOHELA account saying I was on forbearance until August 2026. I’m rather confused with all that has happened does July’s payment count or not? I work for a qualifying employer.

anyone else not get a 90 day Notice email from MOHELA?

I applied for buyback in December 2025. Received emails from dept of education that SAVE was ending, and that my loan servicer would be contacting me, but still haven’t received anything from MOHELA advising me to switch plans/giving me 90 days. Anyone else?

What the actual Eff!

Hi everyone. I reached 120 months of eligible employment on March 2025 and immediately applied for buyback to cover the months I was defaulted into the SAVE plan and in school deferment. My qualifying month count has fluctuated for the past three or four years. They have settled on the lowest count yet. I have a total of 8 loans from undergrad and grad school and my counts range between 99 and 107. I have about 21 months that I should qualify to buyback (whatever) I have been waiting since April 2025 with six case numbers ranging between 270 and 308 assigned through reconsideration requests since the initial requests were ignored. I received an email notice that my duplicate cases were being closed. At this time I submitted a complaint, which gave me a 308 case number. That appeared as “completed “ with a date of Dec. 31, 1969. I never received any other communication but finally noticed this last week. So I escalated the case, which I now open.

I also called Mohela and FSA on separate occasions. First I spoke with FSA who told me they were waiting for Mohela to provide a qualifying payment count (June2026), then I. July I spoke to Mohela and they denied having any such process since that is essentially what they do, every month- calculate and log payments- and therefore have nothing separate to do the same work. So I called FSA and they insist they are waiting for a count. I can see the count. I can practically guesstimate a buyback amount.

What the actual eFf! I am stuck in limbo. My entire life has been shaped by this dumb debt at the least expensive educational institutions. I paid off my car that cost way more in less time. I am livid. Oh and unemployed.

I need any reassurance that this is going somewhere with rainbows and sunlight. Or perhaps, guidance. Thx.

"We Can't Expedite Your Application"

This is a rant.

For reference, I am 9 months away from being able to apply for PSLF.

I submitted my IDR back on May 10th and it was denied on May 15th. The app was denied four days later and the letter from Mohela said it was denied because I didn't select a payment plan. So I called and told them I downloaded my FSA application and I did select it. The rep said she wasn't sure why they rejected it and submitted it to be reviewed.

Well, 60 says go by and I got the notice that my forbearance is up. I called on July 15th where the rep told me I had applied for a plan I wasn't eligible for and I needed to reapply but that the app wouldn't be done before my payment would shoot up to $948 a month. For reference, my current payment is $64 dollars a month and my income has increased by pennies. I digress. I called back on the 22nd and demanded my application be processed in time because the initial rep wasted my 60 days of forbearance payments that were eligible for PSLF by having them look at an app she should have known was wrong. The manager I spoke with said point blank AND on writing that she would have it expedited and completed in 10 business days. It was not done.

Long story short, I called and demanded to speak with a supervisor and their legal team contact information about suing over breach of contract. If I agreed to a second forbearance, those months wouldn't be eligible for PSLF.

I called and left 8 messages with the management team. Sent 15 requests for legal department contact information for my non-existent attorney. Sent 12 emails through my secure messaging online and spoke with 5 supervisors about how I wouldn't accept anything less than them processing this before my next due date.

Their classic line "We expedited this but we cannot gurnatee it." and I said "I will guarantee my attorney sues each person I spoke with individually who held up my application causing my PLSF to be pushed back.

Bottom line...here is my confirmation that my payment plan was in fact put into place after just two business days of calling and emailing non-stop about Mohela jerking me around during the last year of my PSLF. 😊

Keep calling, keep complaining guys. 🖕🏾 Mohela.

Submitted IDR on Mohela — timeline?

As the subject says, I submitted my application re: new payment play on the Mohela site directly. Studentaid.gov, unsurprisingly, was not loading/working at all — hours with a blinking blue dot. Anyone have insight re: experiences doing this, and getting their new plan approved?

Why are they so terrible at their jobs?

I filed to get a new IDR plan now that SAVE is gone. 2 weeks before my first payment is due, I find out I'm getting divorced. So I ask for a forbearance until December, after the divorce is finalized. It takes some back and forth and several phone calls, but it finally gets done and my payment shows as zero. Cool.

So my divorce lawyer needs something that shows what my new, post-divorce payment will be. So I submit a recalculation request using only my income. I check the box that I want to stay in forbearance.

First I can't save or print the application, even though FSA recommends printing or saving. Then Mohela has a "processing delay" of up to 90 days. Finally, they process the application and send me a letter saying it's approved and payments start in January 2027. 3 minutes later, I get another letter with my payment schedule showing payments start September 2026. I look in the system and it also shows a payment due in September. I'm guessing they're going to make me submit another forbearance request and knowing them they'll have a processing delay, and then...

Ugh. I hate paying organizations to be terrible at their jobs.

Mohela - 90 day email notice

I’m confused, did my 90 days start today or July 3rd?
Body of email looked to be the same in both emails, but 2nd one (received today 8/12) has the 90 days in the subject line. Whereas the 1st email (received 7/3) just talks about the Save plan ending.

I had originally thought the email last month, was my notice and when the 90-day countdown had begun. But now I’m questioning it. Could anyone provide any insights?

Yes, I’ve looked at my repayment options, I’m just still trying to see which would be better for me. And in the meantime, paying down what other debts I can before I start SL payments again.

Woke up to 9 emails from MOHELA

I started my IDR this month and I woke up to this hot mess. No clue what is happening with all these separate charges? I haven’t had a chance to call but if I can figure out what is happening without talking to these people, that’d be awesome.

Is anyone else still waiting for the IDR forgiveness over 300 payments? This has been going on for over two years.

I keep ending up in administrative forbearance with MOHELA saying they need FSA to release FSA saying contact your servicer.

Any success rectifying incorrect interest amounts?

After doing the math, Mohela tacked on interest in an inflated, incorrect amount and during the administrative forbearance period.

Incorrect inflated interest was applied 1) during a processing forbearance in 2024 and 2) last month, at a rate of 108%/day Yeah, you read that right. It's supposed to be 4.75.

I called previously about the processing forbearance and I did not get anywhere because this person did not know the difference between a processing and an administrative forbearance. I also called a second time about the interest act on during the administrative forbearance where we should not have been accumulating interest and was told that that should have been handled by the federal government.

Has anyone had any success not only getting hold of them but having a correct interest corrected on their accounts? If so, how?

Edit add: save plan is ending and I'd prefer to switch to a standard repayment plan but I also don't want this (almost 4000$) worth of incorrect interest to capitalize.

Faulty embedded delinquency error is destroying my credit

Since starting repayment I have made every payment in full, on time. However, since March I started receiving “Past Due” notices for $0. They call it an “embedded delinquency” and its now showing up on my credit report as a having payment that past due over 120 days. I have called, minimum, every month for the past 5 months, spoken to supervisors, and had my request “escalated” several times. Every time I’m assured it will be resolved in 10 business days. It never is.

I can’t really afford it, but at what point do I have to get a lawyer?

Pay ahead status & autopay

I am in repayment status with my loans. I recently paid a large amount of money to Mohela and I will be in pay ahead status.

Due to this pay ahead status I will not need to make another payment until I recertify next year, but I was advised to remove autopay so money doesn’t get taken out of my account on a monthly basis.

The rep said that despite being in pay ahead status, if I still have autopay set up then Mohela will continue to take money out of my account on a monthly basis. He said that is how the system is set up.

I elected to remove the autopay.

Anyone who is in repayment status and is now on pay ahead status, were you told the same thing?
