If you're travelling from Mawkdok-Sohra route of Meghalaya and want to explore a little more offbeat than the usual, Umrupiah Falls is one place I'd genuinely recommend putting on the list.
What I love about this place is that it doesn't demand a whole day of trekking to reach.
From the parking point, it's roughly a 30 mins hike to the falls and when we visited, we were literally the only ones there.
No regular crowd.
No line of tourists waiting for photographs.
Just the sound of nature and the forest around us and enough space to breathe in peace.
That's what makes Umrupiah so unique.
Alongside,
there's a nice little indigenous cafe along the way 👀
If you're making a day out of the route, you can also stop at Mei Ramew Cafe and try out some traditional, authentic Khasi food. Especially, the "Sha Krai" known as Millet tea, is a 100/10. It's more like a herbal medicine and very nutritious.
It makes the whole experience more like spending a day in Meghalaya, less like a tourist, and more like a local.
If you're the kind of traveller who'd rather explore deeper to find quieter stops, Umrupiah is definitely worth knowing about.
And if you're visiting Meghalaya and would like to explore places like this with someone who knows the lesser-known routes, feel free to reach out.
Just one request if you visit: leave the place exactly as you found it. Kindly , DO NOT LITTER HERE.
