Small transmission case leak, has anyone successfully repaired something like this with JB Weld?

Small transmission case leak, has anyone successfully repaired something like this with JB Weld?

Hi everyone,
I have a small but persistent ATF leak coming from what looks like a crack in the transmission casing near the rear bolt area.
The leak appears to come directly from that point rather than from the transmission pan gasket. It is not spraying, but it is enough to create a noticeable drip over time.
Has anyone here experienced a leak from this area on a Montero transmission, or a similar aluminum transmission case?
I am considering trying a proper JB Weld

Do you think this is likely to hold, assuming it is only a very small crack and not a structural break? Is there a specific JB Weld product you would recommend for an aluminum transmission case exposed to ATF and heat?

Help to know where the pressure port is on my transmission.

I've had my 1998 Montero Gen 2.5 for the last year and a half. The transmission just recently decided to not hold pressure after getting to 55mph. It genuinely just will increase the rpm without even trying to speed up (I can't even see my RPM gauge because it's just nonfunctioning for some reason since I got it). I've thrown Lucas trans oil in it and lube guard as well to see if it does anything, which it has helped (not by a metric ton but enough). But if anyone could help so I can pressure test it that would be greatly appreciated, or if anyone knows where I can find a manual for this thing.

Gen 2 brake warning light

Hi team,

The fluid levels are correct and the issue only seems to happen when the truck is cold, any ideas where I should be looking?

Cheers.

Deal or no deal 1989 3.0 Montero

1989 Montero MK1, wants 5.5k for it. Located in Puerto Rico. A/C evaporator not working, A/C does not blow cold. 275k miles. New shocks. Runs and drives very well. Iconic vehicle. Should I purchase it knowing I’ll spend 1k fixing the A/C.

All windows work. Inside is decently clean.

Steering wheel cover options!

Hey everyone! I have a 2000 NM Pajero (Australia based) and I’ve purchased 2 different steering wheel covers, one being a leather RM Williams one and the other being a rubber/fabric Ringers Western one, both of which won’t seem to fit my steering wheel. I have a stock steering wheel so no after market mods on it, both covers are 38cm (15”) so I’m wondering what I’m doing wrong, everywhere says that the Pajero steering wheel is that size. Help! Have I got the size wrong? Am I installing it wrong? Any suggestions on steering wheel covers? (Yes it’s upside down in the photo, we were also installing my bullbar and tough grips)

Why does my 2010 Pajero vibrate on rough roads?

I have a Pajero 2010. On textured AND corrugated roads I feel heavy cabin vibration and stiffness, but large humps are fine and no major bouncing. Shocks look ok (no leaks). Is this normal for Pajero or likely worn bushes/mounts/tires? Any advice appreciated.

how can i fit it?

Any insight on bucking in turns?

My 2002 Montero Sport has developed a curious case of “humping the ground” when turning slowly, especially in reverse. It feels as though I’m turning over rough bumpy terrain even when it’s nice flat pavement. It also seems worse after I’ve driven highway speeds for some time.

The wall of specs
2002 Montero Sport 3.5l automatic 4 speed, 4\Awd
74,000 miles
New timing belt, transmission fluid and filter, new gear oil in transfer case, and both diffs.
New tie rod ends, ball joints, just had an alignment done. EGR deleted, but probably gonna reconnect due to check engine light.
Drives fine in straight lines.

Thanks in advance, people of the internet

Just purchased, planning maintenance

I just got my first montero, 2000 gen 2.5, with about 225k miles. It is in pretty good shape overall, but at idle and low rpm it's pretty shaky. Plenty smooth at higher rpms, highway etc. not sure where to start with that one.

The 4x4 dash lights occasionally are flashing the front wheels when driving in 2H. I ordered a freewheel clutch control solenoid, which I heard can be a cause. Hopefully I'm lucky and that solves that.

Timing belt, ignition coils, spark plugs are all done. Is there anything else you all would look to get sorted if you bought a higher mileage gen 2.5?

Thank you!

Anybody have experience with this Alibaba Android head unit?

Looking to upgrade and I like the look of this one, along with the big screen. Anyone taken the gamble on this and what was tour experience?

Old Pajero ownership, boys.

One minute you’re sitting there like a genius, planning tyres, suspension, rock sliders and all the trail goodies.

Next minute the dash lights up like Eskom just came back after Stage 6, the centre display taps out with an abnormal voltage warning, and the old goat is sitting in the garage on charge like a pensioner on life support.

Diagnosis so far: alternator is not charging, battery is leaking, oil leak is getting sorted while we’re already bleeding money, and the turbo has a bit of play in it too. Not urgent, they say. Not cheap either, obviously. Because why would it be?

She’s a 2004 Gen 3 LWB 3.2 Di-D. My first proper 4x4. It was my mom’s Pajero before she passed, so this thing is not just transport to me. It’s family history with a transfer case.

The fun mods can wait. Right now we’re in the ugly but important part of the build:

Reliability rebuild phase.

New starter.

New brakes.

Now new battery and alternator.

Oil leak next.

Turbo watching me from the corner like “don’t forget about me.”

This is not the glamorous part of 4x4 ownership. No flex shots. No mountain passes. No hero recovery photos.

Just an old Pajero demanding respect, one invoice at a time.

Still love the bloody thing.

Transmission / P0741 Question

Hi, appreciate the time you’re all taking to read this, as I’m connecting with anyone who knows more than I do!

I’m in California, I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Limited, 3.5 L, got it used with really low mileage — no history of accidents, at 70K — a few years ago.

Due to my paranoia, I stupidly drained my trans fluid at 80K, with no symptom (just paranoia), found minor, gold flakes; then due to maybe bad advice (and more paranoia!), I continued to drain two more cycles at 5Ks, found more flakes at each cycle, still no symptoms; then at 90K, my transmission went out, and I had a complete rebuild, paid about $3K, came with a 12K warranty, standard.

Now, about 24K since that complete rebuild (about 12K over warranty), I am getting a P0741 TCC code, have had it for about two weeks, no symptoms.

The shop that rebuilt my transmission have stopped doing retail because they signed a corporate account, so they don’t have the manpower/time — it sucks, the owner is nice, feels honest, assured me he didn’t do any shortcuts, thinks it might be electrical, but he never had a chance to look at it!

Took it to another transmission shop today, and they said it’s definitely a bad TCC solenoid, based on their tests, and he says my fluid looks clean, smells good, and everything “looks great from the outside”; he estimates about $1,500 to drop the pan, replace solenoid and filter, and add fluid, including labor, BUT he says if he drops the pan and finds metal, then changing the solenoid may not solve the problem permanently, and he would suggest rebuilding the transmission IF that’s the case; he also says it’s impossible to tell, even if he drops the pan and finds no metal, that my actual clutch converter is good, because for that he would have to open it up and see.

This all makes sense physically, but I’m hoping to get an expert opinion about my situation, because I literally just dropped $3K two years ago already! I’m keen to paying $1,500 to drop the pan, but not sure what I should do when I find no metal versus metal; because according to him, the new shop, either way, there’s NO actual assurance that this would fix the code and solve the problem.

Also — hoping for the off-chance that when my original guy rebuilt my transmission and clutch converter, he didn’t replace my old solenoid, and so now it’s gone bad, and not due to any new metal shavings! Because I literally drive like a grandma, I don’t off-road, I don’t tow, I don’t hard shift. Is that possible? That he just used my old solenoid in my new rebuilt transmission?

Does this make sense?

Also, importantly, another question for your expertise; I would like to take a 6-hour road to see my mom next week, and I’m getting different opinions about whether it’s safe for me to do so. I know I’ll be wasting some gas due to bad mileage, BUT would my transmission overheat if I’m driving at 80MPH for six hours, with this code?!

I passed my smog check before this code, so that part I’m good for now.

I’m gonna be getting a second opinion next week from another shop, I feel like that would be wise. Would love your thoughts!
I
Thanks!

Did the 2nd gen ever come with a non turbo 4d56?

Dad’s SWB 2nd gen. Didn’t start this morning, so I went to check it out. Noticed it looked a little different from his LWB fieldmasters with a 4M40. Google said it didn’t, but I don’t trust Google AI
