Looking for coaster like tag for our app

Hello,

We are currently looking for a tag that is coaster like that we could orde about 20 for. Most places only have orders of 50+. We want it a circular design about 3 inches and everywhere I seem to go does not have that under 50 units. is there anywehere I can go? Or is it better to just make a custom coaster and slap a NFC sticker under neath? Thank you!!

Is it possible to wipe this tag for reuse?

The tag that I have is a transportation card from MBTA. I got it from my trip to massachusetts and no longer need it but i thought it would be cool to repurpose it. Here are screenshots from NFC Tools

Thanks in advance!

decentralised offline NFC reading - possible?

I had an idea for a work project, but not sure if it’s actually going to be cost effective or possible, now that I’m investigating it.

I want to run a ‘scavenger hunt’ type system, where clients can check in at each site with a tag - however, there’s no internet connection at most sites and a strong preference for a self contained system ie no mains power.

Initially my thought was to just put a regular NFC tag at each site and give each client a reader, but most of them are ugly, expensive, large, or all three; I also am having trouble figuring out how to have the reader ‘report back’ without a network connection or being physically connected to a computer. I could potentially have a read/write solution at each site instead and the client takes the tag, but not sure how to keep it small and self contained (I only have experience writing tags with my phone).

I know an app would be the simplest solution here but I would really like to have a physical item for clients to have. ‘The Lens’ at ACMI is very similar to what I’d like to do, but they don’t have the same space and power constraints obviously. https://www.acmi.net.au/lens/

Open to any and all suggestions!

TapShift - NFC Management Platform

Hello everyone, this is my first post so i hope i'll stick to the rules.

TapShift (name to be reviewed), is an NFC Management & Redirection Platform, the goal is to be able to manage a swarm of NFC tags without having to rewrite their contents every time.

Features:

  • NFC / QRCODE (for legacy) link redirection management (short-link style)
  • Analytics on tag taps / qrcode scans
  • 14+ link types supported
  • redirect scheduling (change redirect URL based on current date/time)
  • redirect protection with password
  • NFC tag writing from the Browser (Android only, i will build native apps in the future to simplify the process of writing the nfc tags even for non-technical users).

Currently im using for my own needs but i'm looking for real feedbacks on the actual idea itself, it looks useful and simple to me but maybe im just excited for it.

You can signup and test it at https://tapshift.xyz, there is no email confirmation or anything currently, also the project is still in beta of course, so DO NOT RELY on it for real usage. Pricing is fake, all plans are FREE for now.

Thanks everyone! ❤️

AITAH for assuming an Eagles fan understood strategic suffering?

The beginning of the end of one of my closest friendships started with the Dallas Cowboys.

Which is fitting because the Dallas Cowboys are essentially a federally unregulated source of human suffering.

I am a diehard Niners fan. Not casually. Spiritually. I hate the Cowboys with the kind of intensity normally reserved for white colonizers and people who microwave fish in the office kitchen.

So one season, when a Cowboys win over the Eagles would lock in the number one seed for the 49ers, I was forced into a kind of NFC East Sophie’s Choice.

This created a profound ethical crisis because rooting for the Cowboys felt like voluntarily participating in my own spiritual degradation.

And yet, because I believe in sacrifice, loyalty, and the pursuit of Lombardi trophies, I swallowed my pride and rooted for a Cowboys victory.

Not joyfully.
Not enthusiastically.
But dutifully.

A sacrifice well worth a Niners Super Bowl win.

Months later, I was at a bar with one of my white professional woman friends — a devoted Eagles fan — and jokingly asked:

“So are you still mad at me for rooting for the Cowboys?”

She glared at me with gritted teeth and said:
“Yes.”

I burst out laughing.

Because surely she was joking. Right???

She was not.

Then she said, plainly, firmly, and with an intensity I would normally associate with wartime resistance movements:

“I would never root for the Cowboys. I don’t care if it helped the Eagles.”

Because what do you mean you would not make a temporary emotional sacrifice for a strategically superior playoff outcome?

That is literally what loyalty is.

To me, rooting for the Cowboys was not betrayal.
It was tactical humiliation in service of the greater good.
So naturally I kept pushing the joke.

“Oh come on,” I laughed. “You absolutely would.”

“No.”

“But if it guaranteed the Eagles a better playoff position?”

She glared again.

“No.”

“But strategically—”

“Maria,” she said through clenched teeth, “I would never root for the Cowboys.”

At this point, I genuinely thought we were engaged in playful sports banter. Which, if you have ever met football fans, is essentially our native language.

Having lived in South Philly for six years — go Owls — I genuinely believed this qualified as deeply mediocre football banter one might casually exchange over a lager at McCusker’s.

Which made it particularly surreal to be accused of aggression by an Eagles fan from New Jersey operating entirely on theoretical Philadelphia energy.

Because suddenly she looked at me and said:

“Maria, you’re being really aggressive.”

Reader, I cannot adequately explain how confusing this was for me.

Aggressive?

I was sitting there discussing playoff probabilities and emotional sacrifice like somebody’s emotionally overinvested tío at a barbecue.

Immediately I started apologizing.

Naturally.

“Oh my god, I’m sorry,” I said. “I genuinely don’t want you to feel that way. What am I doing that feels aggressive?”

And instead she just kept repeating:

“You’re being aggressive.”
“You’re being aggressive.”

No clarification.
No examples.
No explanation.

Just the phrase itself repeated over and over like she was trying to summon Bloody Mary.

Shudder.

Or worse:

Bloody Karen.

Double shudder.

And now, somehow, I was crying outside a bar because my brain had entered a full input contradiction loop that only a Fireball shot could break.

The truly disorienting part was that once I became visibly upset and apologetic, the original accusation no longer even made sense to me.

The next day, she never called.

Mutual friends quietly stopped inviting me places because she “felt uncomfortable.”

Not because I yelled.
Not because I insulted her.
Not because I demanded anyone choose sides.

Apparently what had occurred was that I had accidentally violated one of the primary rules of upper-middle-class white woman social ecosystems:

if someone feels uncomfortable, the person associated with the discomfort quietly becomes socially radioactive.

I am the Dallas Cowboys in their story.

Ouch.

Which leaves me with only one logically consistent conclusion:

the Dallas Cowboys are a curse upon this earth, poisoning everything within their vicinity.

So hide your friendships, your playoff hopes, and apparently your cocaine.

Because unlike some people, I am apparently willing to spiritually degrade myself one “How ’bout them Cowboys?” at a time in service of the greater good.

So now I’m sitting here genuinely wondering whether I accidentally committed an act of interpersonal terrorism by repeatedly asking an Eagles fan to acknowledge basic playoff mathematics.

Was I unknowingly aggressive?

Did I violate some sacred East Coast female social contract?

Or did I simply encounter the first Eagles fan in recorded history unwilling to temporarily debase herself for postseason advantage?

AITAH?

Bang bang, Niner gang.

Metal Business Card w/ NFC

Im want to make a metal NFC business cards for my company and have been talking to a bunch of Alibaba suppliers.

My benchmark is basically the Amex / other metal credit cards. I know they’re technically hybrid cards (metal + PVC), but they still feel like pure metal to the naked eye / hand.

Most samples/videos I’ve seen online look pretty bad though. A lot of them end up looking like metal on one side and a cheap hotel keycard on the other.

I’m sure there must be suppliers/manufacturing methods that can get much closer to the feel/finish of an Amex-style card. Anything specific I should be looking for in terms of materials, construction, coatings, NFC setup, etc.?

Playing Audio from Tag?

Look, I know that a chip can store around 500 Bytes, and that the smallest possible 2 minute mp3 file is around 500 Kilobytes, which is 1024 times what an NFC tag can store. This obviously makes NFC tags impossible to use as a storage medium for audio files using conventional means. That being said, I'm interested if anyone knows any sort of hack or workaround for storing audio files on NFC tags. For example, LEGO has been using NFC bricks to store audio files by making their custom NFC reader have an onboard synthesizer which is capable of producing the desired sounds from simple text instructions on the NFC chip. Obviously this requires custom hardware, but it's fun.

My unrealistic goal would be to have a 2 minute voice recording stored on the chip, so that a mobile phone could download it off of the chip without an internet connection. Not needing internet is vital to this. I could obviously link to an audio file stored on an online content distribution service, but that's boring. I'd also like to generally avoid custom hardware or software, so that anyone can access the audio file without needing anything they don't already possess. This isn't that vital though.

Just how close could one reasonably get to this goal?

Tap to send random quotes?

Would it be possible to create a way to tap an NFC tag and have it send random text from list of famous quotes?

I would like to create one as a button for my niece’s backpack which would then her a text of affirmation while she is studying in grad school.

I am open to other ways to display something or other ideas from you creative geeks :)

I redesigned my tiny e-ink keychain after Reddit feedback

Hi folks,

A few months ago I shared a small message-bubble keychain with a 1.54" e-ink display, and got a ton of helpful feedback on the design. Over the past month I’ve been redesigning the enclosure, and this is the latest version.

The new case is 3D printed in translucent PETG, so you can still see the PCB through the shell. The display sits in a recessed cutout, and I’m using a UV-glued acrylic front panel to keep it protected while staying thin. Total thickness is around 4 mm, which feels surprisingly compact while still sturdy enough for everyday carry.

I also added a corner loop so you can attach key rings, lanyards, charms, etc.

One feature I’m especially happy with: the e-ink tag also includes NFC functionality, so you can use it for iPhone automations, shortcuts, contact cards, or other NFC-triggered actions.

A lot of people asked about the app on my last post too:

iPhone app is already live on the App Store, Android version currently installs via APK (Play Store release still pending). So far, any NFC-capable phone I’ve tested works fine

Current price is $29 USD including a free lanyard. Production turnaround is about 3–5 days and it ships from the US. check out the website:

https://shellrus.com/products/nfc-powered-e-ink-tag-with-1-54-4-color-display

Would love to hear what you think about the updated design — especially the enclosure/material choices.

Help with setting up SDM

I have bought the NTAG424 nfc card and i would like to enable sdm and setup picc and cmac with a custom URL. Im fairly new to this, so my question is which software should i use for this, i have a ACR122U reader, ive looked online, but it seems like the TagXplorer from NXP will not work with this reader.

Did anyone else have issues with this? How did you solve it?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I didn’t realize NFC had become this practical for everyday businesses

Most of the time when people talk about NFC technology, it’s usually around contactless payments or digital business cards. I honestly never thought much about it beyond that.

But recently I walked into a small café and noticed a little stand near the register asking customers to “Tap here to leave a review.” I thought it was interesting because customers didn’t need to download anything or even search the business online manually.

I can see why businesses are starting to use them because most customers probably won’t take the extra effort later at home, even if they had a great experience. Making the process immediate seems more realistic.

I’m curious whether NFC engagement rates are actually better than normal QR systems or if both perform about the same in real-world situations.

Do people actually prefer NFC over QR codes now?

I’ve been testing different NFC setups recently for things like Google reviews, WiFi sharing and social links.

One thing I noticed is that people seem much more likely to tap an NFC tag than scan a QR code, especially in restaurants or at checkout counters.

The interaction just feels faster and more natural.

Curious if others here noticed the same thing or tested similar setups?
