Hiya folks,
I found this in Kadıköy today, and was wondering:
A: Is this likely real, or some kind of reproduction? For 200TL it seemed a bit cheap…
B: What does the title or some of the text translate to? (I hardly expect someone to go about translating an entire newspaper page)
Thank you!
I was given this box as a gift and told it was carved by an Ottoman soldier during WW1. Can anyone help me translate? Or are there any signs in the language that might dispel that idea? Thank you!
This appears on the title page of the 1905 Constantinople reprint of this Ladino bible but not on the 1873 original. We suspect it is an Ottoman Turkish publisher's note. Can anyone provide a transcription and translation? Our best guess using AI is dates:
Dedemin tahmini 1950’de cekilmis fotografinin yapistirildigi kartonun arkasinda yazan el yazisini okuyabilen var mi?
Greetings Osmanlıca uzmanları,
I am hoping someone would be kind enough to transcribe (in the original script) the title page from an Ottoman-Turkish atlas, published in 1325 (1909/1910).
The atlas, an exemplar of which is housed at the David Rumsey Map Center at Stanford University, is catalogued as follows:
>Mehmet Nasrullah, Mehmet Rushtu, and Mehmet Eshref. Memalik-i Mahruse-yi Shahaneʼye mahsus : Mukemmel ve mufassal atlas. Kitaphane-yi Tefeyyuz. Istanbul: Shirket-i Murettibiye Matbaasi - 1325 (1909). https://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/12834726.
Out of curiosity, I asked ChatGPT to transcribe and transliterate the text of the title page, and the results do not conform to the aforementioned bibliographical details; however, I know from personal experience that the AI is quite error-prone.
In short, I am looking for a second opinion—a transcription of the Ottoman-Turkish text in the original script, which may be too tall an order, but I figure it does not hurt to ask.
A high-resolution image of the title page is available here: https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/s/993zb8.
Figure 1 is of the title page. Figures 2–7 are of the title page broken down into sections, each followed by the transcription and transliteration provided by ChatGPT.
