Help with deciding my first PRS!

Hello all, I am looking to decide on my first PRS, and I've narrowed it down to the S2 Special Semi-hollow, mainly taking inspiration from the John Mayer Super Eagle (one can only dream of having it). Just tried one at my local store and I was in love with it, I absolutely adore a Semi-Hollow with the three pup config (hum/single/hum).

One thing i would change about the S2 would be the set neck into a bolt-on neck, I just prefer the feel of it though I'm not sure if there are any benefits to set up or tone? Hence the CE24 Semi-hollow has also caught my eye because of the bolt-on neck.

Would appreciate any advice with the necks, and maybe some influencing on what might be good with set necks vs bolt-on?

Opinions on value difference

I was recently offered this 2011 SC-58 in trade for my 2020 McCarty in Fire Red Burst, non 10-top. From what I understand the SC would have an Artist top, which is cool. Mine has the original case and all candy, it appears the case for the SC is either aftermarket or one of the Hollowbody style cases. Anyway, I’m curious what you guys may think about value difference. I see values for the McCarty’s a lot more than the SC-58’s since they were a little limited in run numbers.

Thoughts on price?

I am looking to sell off one my PRS guitars, a core studio in cobalt blue. I originally wanted to sell it for 2k, but I think that might be asking too much. Thoughts? Maybe $2,700.00 is more realistic?

Is a PRS SE Mark Holcomb too much guitar to start with?

Hey everyone,
I’m primarily a drummer, but I’ve recently decided that I’d really like to start learning electric guitar. The problem is that I have pretty limited free time, so I’ll probably begin with online lessons and practice whenever I can.
At the music store where I take drum lessons once a week, I came across a PRS SE Mark Holcomb that I can buy for around €1000 and it got me seriously considering it as my first electric guitar.
My main question is:
Is buying a guitar like the PRS SE Mark Holcomb overkill for a complete beginner?
On one hand, I know I could start with something much cheaper. On the other hand, I’d rather buy something that will last me for years and keep me inspired to play, instead of upgrading shortly after.
I’m mainly interested in:
Comfort/playability for a beginner
Overall versatility
Whether it’s a good long-term instrument
If the specs/features make sense for someone new to guitar
I’m also wondering whether I should instead look at something like the PRS SE CE 24, which seems to be recommended a lot as a versatile option for beginners and intermediate players.
For context, I enjoy progressive metal/rock, but I’d also like a guitar that can cover other styles reasonably well while I learn.
What do you think?
Would you recommend the SE Mark Holcomb as a first guitar, or would a different PRS model make more sense?
Thanks!

Pickups, what to choose? heavy tones

Hi all, got this 2013 SE and the pickups are having a hard time convincing me, it’s the HFS/Vintage, I have a semi hollow SE with Alnico 2 Toneriders and they sound amazing, the vintage seems better but the HFS no matter the configuration and preset I can’t get a tone that I would call it killer, time to upgrade?? What are the options? I measured and the bridge it’s around 14.5k ohms

Anybody able to tell me if this is a legit core silver sky?

Placement of year compared to serial on the back of the headstock differs from other silver sky’s, potential red flag Typing in the serial number to google comes back as an SE but idk how much I trust the accuracy on that. Seller has only 1, 5 star review. Place leave your opinions below, would love some input.

NGD: Acoustic PRS SE A20E

It arrived almost in tune, has a sweet matte neck feel, and I’m quite happy with how it sounds (casual player). Considered Yamaha, Fender, and LTD before pulling the trigger on this one.

NGD: Standard 24 Satin Apple Red Metallic

Got this at the weekend, feels great to play and really like these pickups compared to the 85/15’s in my S2

New McCarty 954 Vintage Sunburst

First big kid guitar. Coming off a worn but servicible squire, this is a totally new experience. It plays so easily and fits very well. The finish is great and everything arrived well sorted. New strings are great but the factory ones weren't terrible. I really love the look but when I spent a little time on it I was hooked.

Help!! 2009 DGT knobs

My new to me 09 DGT had unoriginal poor fitting knobs. I ordered a set of USA 24 spline from PRS. Only the second volume knob fit decent. The push-pull wouldn’t fit at all. The first volume knob fit but was a bit loose and went down too far. The knob was rubbing slightly on the body. I pulled the back plate to see if the pots had been replaced. They looked original to me. After further inspection inspection of the shafts themselves it tells a different story. One is Brass fine splined and short, one is brass, fine splined and tall, the push pull is zink, coarse splined (metric?) and tall. If they are indeed mix matched imported replacements would I be doing my guitar a disservice by not returning to the originals? This is the nicest guitar I own. Check out the pics and please help me with this!! Ive purchased 2 sets of knobs already with. No luck. Ill post more pics in the comments

Thinking about upgrading my PRS SE Silver Sky (John Mayer Stone Blue) pickups and bridge

Hello everyone,

I bought a PRS SE John Mayer Silver Sky in Stone Blue when it first came out a few years ago, but I’ve honestly been thinking about getting the American Silver Sky instead but I really like this SE guitar mainly because of the color and overall feel, but I’m considering a different approach.

I was thinking about installing 635JM pickups into this SE model, and also maybe swapping in the bridge from the American version. I’m not sure it makes sense to sell this guitar, since I probably wouldn’t get much for it anyway, I paid around €1100 for it new when it first arrived in the shop.

What do you think: would it be worth upgrading the SE like this?

What are the chances this top darkens over time?

I’m absolutely loving this 2016 Custom 24 and surprised how quick I acclimated to the rotary tone switch! Neck is thinner than my 1996 McCarty I had to sell years ago, but I’m not trying to get all nostalgic and remember that this guitar fits my playing style so much better today than when I started out - so in reality this guitar is all around perfect for me from a playability standpoint.

With that said, the top was a huge consideration when purchasing because I wanted to LOVE it through and through. The flashy finishes and bursts are awesome in their own right and I totally get why people buy them, but I wanted something a bit more unique and not something you run into all the time. I had a semi-hollow SE Custom 22 from the mid 2000’s run in the natural finish and absolutely loved it (massively underrated IMO) but had a hard time looking at it everyday after a while. That’s said, this 10 top is in a different universe, comparatively, but I still get a hint of that dislike factor because of the one I used to have. I’ve seen stains on other models fade, bleed, darken and lighten, so I was wondering if this one will potentially darken over time. Not a lot, but enough to give it a little more character.

TLDR; Will a natural finish on a 2016 Custom 24 darken at all over time? Love it as is, but curiously optimistic that it can/will. The picture was taken in the dark with a flash, so it’s actually slightly lighter than that in person. Thanks!
