I am 25 hour-ish onto the game and so far loving it. Before Madarame's castle I was introduced to Mementos, but I don't understand what's the deal with them? Do I need to go once in a while to see what I find? Or to fight with the shadows there? Or just when I am given quests to go?

Also I reached level 19 but I feel I should have been a higher level when fighting Madarame's boss bc it was kinda difficult fight. How can I reach higher levels? Should I fight every shadow I encounter?

I am a newbie in Persona and jrpg games so please be gentle 😭 I am following some guides too for the confidants and in some parts of the story in case I miss something

I really wanted to like this game, but I feel mislead.

I REALLY wanted to like this game.

Everyone kept bringing up P5-R as a must play, so I watched and read a lot of reviews before finally purchasing it. The “length” of the game was brought up a lot as a negative, but that didn’t phase me because I love games with lots of content to explore and am used to 100%ing and sinking lots of time. “Story heavy” games don’t scare me: I loved Witcher 3, Baldur’s gate 3 and E33 (lots of 3’s lol). But in reviews of P5-R, no one ever elaborated on what they meant by “length”, so I just assumed they meant there was lots of main story content. So I dropped the 60 bucks and bought it.

Once I started playing, everything seemed right up my alley at first: music and art style is great, creature creating and collecting immediately caught my interest, the idea of exploring Tokyo and doing life sim stuff in between seemed cool.

But pretty soon I started to wonder “hey, when am I going to be set free from this very on-rails tutorial?” Everyone online said after the first palace, but I’m way past the first palace and nothing has changed 😂.

It’s now become crystal clear to me that this game is more like 60% visual novel and dating sim, with about 20% actual gameplay and 20% life sim stuff, if that. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration at all to say the majority of the game is just clicking through dialogue scenarios and cut scenes.

I honestly barely consider it a life sim because every life sim aspect is literally just a cut scene (except for like 2 : the batting cages and crossword puzzle). Plus, the game very rarely gives you true “freedom” to make decisions about what you’re doing day to day. Like most in game “days” just fly by as cut scenes. Like what happened to the whole “morning,noon and night” idea?? The amount of time you actually have physical control of your character is hardly any time at all.

I’m honestly pissed 😂. Why does NO-ONE mention in any review how “visual novel”-esq this game actually is ?? I’ve tried to keep playing past the second palace but I just can’t do it. I don’t mean to trash a lot of people’s favorite game, the combat and palaces are awesome, but I feel so incredibly mislead about the gameplay loop.

So I started getting into the Persona series like 2 months ago with P3R (loved it), then moved on to P5R (I did play some other games in between tho, I’m not THAT addicted lmao).

I’m about 15 hours in right now and playing on Hard, since I pretty much always play games on this difficulty, but I gotta ask:

Is it normal to get absolutely fucking destroyed this early on?

I feel like some bosses can straight up one-shot me or get me down to like 10% HP with one hit, even tho I’m still pretty early in the game. I’m talking stuff like the end of the first Palace or some Mementos bosses. Even some regular enemies hit like a truck on their first attack sometimes.

So yeah, is Hard just kinda brutal in P5R or am I doing something completely wrong?

Also, second question: I had no idea Royal was basically the “complete” version of the game, so I was kinda surprised by the amount of extra stuff it gives you. Like, I got A LOT of costumes and random bonuses, but the thing that really surprised me was being able to summon Personas from the previous protagonists.

I haven’t played P4 yet (although I obviously know who the protagonist is), and these Personas are like level 80 or some shit.
Isn’t that kinda weird? 💀

Like, you can apparently just summon
a fucking lvl 80 Persona basically at the beginning of the game. Doesn’t that completely fuck up the progression/difficulty?

Hi guys! I’m surly new to JRPGS.
I played many styles of games but I love story focused games. Specially old school, short ish games that don’t include a lot of extra content just to make the game longer, and games that you can play without having to check online guides and stuff like that.

I’m in the second palace and very much enjoying the game. I don’t get a lot of time, maybe 4-5hours of gaming per week. So I’m afraid of burnout, and because I’m ADHD my mind wonders easily to wanting to play other games(have a big backlog of course)

So my question is, for those of you that might have similar issues, what’s your strategy to finish the game?
