What are these in a bath drain?

Decided to scope the bathtub drain just to make sure there wasn't any rogue toys the kids had lost in the bath down there, and kind of didn't expect to find these weird dangly pipe things? There's the orangey one and an identical black one next to it seems to be right at the s bend. Running water through while looking at them they just kind of 'blow in the wind' so they're quite flexy, the bath waste goes straight down into the slab so this is under it. All I can think of are drain points for generic bathroom floor wastes, but we don't seem to have any? Any guesses welcome?

What do these taps do?

Hey all, first time home owner and first time poster here. I've just moved into my new place and am trying to get familiar with its quirks, as it's quite an old building. Was hoping someone with some plumbing knowledge could explain what/where all these pipes connect to. This is directly under my kitchen sink and next to my dishwasher. I thought they might be isolation valves but they're not colour coded and it looks like there are three different taps? Idk. If anyone more knowledgeable wants to take a guess I'd much appreciate it 🙈

Imperial tap spindle?

I'm trying to remove this tap spindle to replace washer.

20mm has too much play (feels like it will round off) and 19mm won't fit over the diameter of the spindle.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Had no idea a broken pipe could stay hidden like this

About 2-3 weeks ago I saw our water bill and it was unexpectedly higher than usual

I figured maybe we’d just used more water than usual somehow and didn’t think too much of it

Then a weird damp spot started showing up on the living room wall right next to the bathroom

But the bathroom itself looked completely fine. No puddles, no dripping, no water on the floor, nothing under the vanity, nothing around the shower

Still I decided not to roll the dice with it and called Top Flow Plumbing Services just to have someone check whether maybe the shower cabin or vanity unit was leaking somewhere behind the scenes

Turns out the issue was way worse than I expected and there was a broken pipe inside the wall, and every time someone used water anywhere in the house, it was slowly leaking into the wall cavity

Basically the house had been quietly drinking water 24/7 while I stood there wondering why the bill looked insane…

The good thing is they found it pretty quickly once they started checking properly. They had to remove a few tiles to get to the pipe, fixed everything up, and somehow even managed to put the tiles back without making the bathroom look like a demolition zone afterward

Honestly kind of scary thinking how long that could’ve gone unnoticed if the wet spot hadn’t shown up

And I’m curious what could happen? What to do to avoid problems like this in the future?

Pathway changing

Hi I'm a nearly 3rd year mature age apprentice tice roof plumbing/ metal cladder

I've become slightly disillusioned with the way my company is moving and changing and I never had a passion for roof plumbing but enjoyed cladding. However the company I work for is moving away from that to focus on roofing, just wondering how difficult it would be to move plumbing streams as a 3rd year mature age. Especially with only experience in roofing and cladding and trade school classes.

Any advice is welcome thanks

Braemar gas central heating error code / insufficient gas suppy

Long story short - my Braemar gas central heating was fitted in 2019.

Serial # 00596615

product 270777

Specific recommendations for a technician welcome.

The unit is now cutting out very soon after starting with error message #6 - "flame detected when not required".

Five service visits and a $1000 service anmd a 120 new flame detector later the error persists but PlumbFirst - who installed and have serviced the unit until now - now claim that the unit is getting insufficient gas supply. Plumber showed me a reading that fell into the 500s. Should ideally over 1000 I believe.

PlumbFirst thinks that there's a leak in the old galvanised pipe leading from gas meter to central heating unit. They want $6000 to replace it. There's no guarantee that a leak is the problem or that a new pipe from meter to unit will solve the problem.

Also I've just had a visit from MultiNet to look at everything - they will be replacing my gas meter so I'm hoping that will solve the problem but not hopeful.

UPDATE: new meter and regulator fitted by MultiNet. They checked and there is no leak in the gas supply and they declate the gas flow sufficient.

Does anyone have experience of Braemar giving a false error #6?

Could an insufficient gas supply lead to error #6 showing on my control panel?

Could this error message be accurate? Multiple service guys have said no.

One suggestion below was a faulty circuit board.

All advice appreciated.

Water Pressure

Hey, I have been looking at houses in Melbourne to purchase for a few weeks now. I've found one I really like and during a second inspection of the house, I noticed that the water pressure isn't great in the bathroom. Is this something that can be fixed?

Help please

G’day all - just moved into a place & every time the sink above this pipe drains (it’s where our washing machine empties) water floods out of the small outlet circled in red.

Does anyone have a solution I can present to the REA beyond “call a plumber” ?

I have checked the pipe for obstructions & found nothing.

Verbal Quote vs final invoice

Hi all, apologies if this is the wrong subreddit - delete if not allowed!

I had a guy come out to fix an issue with a sewer pressure pump and whilst he was at it, he mentioned an "upgrade" he's been doing on some of the older systems he deals with. He may have just been up selling me, but when I asked him how much total for the jobs (original call out and what he was mentioning) he said $1000-1200 depending on labour.

Cut two weeks ahead, he's just sent me an invoice for $2500 bucks. Is he taking the piss? Invoice attached for reference.

Of note, he was on site for 2 hours 20 minutes and didn't take anything back to a workshop for fabrication or anything.

Can’t find hot water shut off in NSW apartment

Hey all,

We have been unable to locate the hot water shut off in our unit. Our building manager has advised every unit has its own shut off (we have communal hot water system), she is just unsure of the exact location in our unit.

We have a cold water only shut off under the ensuite basin. Our kitchen tap has an isolation tap for hot and cold. We have checked under the laundry tub and in our linen cupboard.

Looking for any ideas of where our hot water shut off may be! Our building was built around 1996 if that helps.

Thanks in advance!!

Question about AI for trade businesses

Hi all,

I am a university student, currently studying at Monash University. I'm working on an assignment for how AI is impacting local businesses and how it can be used. I wanted to ask, what are some problems that plumbers face where AI could be implemented to make the business operate more efficiently? I've had conversations with a few people that I know and they have said that one of the primary problems they face is losing potential customers due to poor lead nurturing. Essentially, people opt into ads that are being run by the businesses, but due to late follow-ups and insufficient lead nurture, too few leads are converted into paying customers. Furthermore, it eats up a lot of admin time. I wanted to ask if anyone else had similar issues and if you could provide me with any advice for where AI might be able to help plumbers improve their day-to-day operations.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Remove "The Gap" Style Rectangular Dual Flush Button

I’m trying to remove the lid with the rectangular flush buttons to change my pump valve inside to fix flush leaking, I can’t tell if it’s glue to the back of the wall, but there are only tutorials that only show how to remove the circular shape button, videos shows that by pushing the circular shape button would reveal a slot that could then be pulled out with a flat head screwdriver, inside would be a rod attached that could be removed, allowing the lid to be open.

I tried to explicitly follow this video https://youtu.be/Xg9SAVudkyk?si=e4o1nLUe3prUkQd2 , still have no success. Any suggestions on how do I open the lid🙏?

Dripping noise inside new toilet that only happens during use

We've recently had a new bathroom with toilet (s trap) installed where there was no plumbing previously. No sign of any leaks or issues, but the toilet makes a weird dripping noise during use, basically when any liquids / solids hit the water inside the pan. You don't hear it during or after flushing. It's a quite fast drip that slows and stops after about 30 seconds. It's seemingly coming from lower down, possibly the waste rather than from the cistern. Any idea what it could be? Is it something worth investigating further?
