Thoughts playing through Red for the first time

My first Pokemon games back when I was 7 in 1998 was Pokemon Yellow and my parents couldn't afford to get me too many games back then, so coming around to finally playing Pokemon Red the last week has been exciting. I'm glad at 35 I get to finally experience the true OG Pokemon experience. My goal was to make a cart ready to play some of the fights in Pokemon Stadium for the first time.

Having played through every Pokemon entry up through Sun/Moon (I skipped most of the Switch entries besides Arceus and Let's Go because...reasons), I definitely knew the RBY as a beautiful mess held together with hopes and dreams, but it has definitely put into perspective what a "true" 1st gen experience is when you don't have all the perks of Yellow carrying you (all the starters, better movesets, etc.).

I'm up to Fuchsia City at this point. I should caveat I am using exploits/glitches to get infinite TMs, but I'm trying to only use one each for my play-through until post-game (though some exclusions apply).

With that said, I wanted to outline a few thoughts I've had based on previous perceptions of the games:

  • I chose Bulbasaur for my first run (basically after flipping a 3 sided coin). I gotta say it has been a bit of a grind getting it to be useful. Vine Whip at 10 PP was rough and made a lot of early routes hard with their only other move being Tackle for so long. I doubt my experience would be much better with Charmander (though Ember would be nice in early parts). I'm pretty sure Squirtle is the best Pokemon starter thanks to its early and long term usability. I look forward to playing with it for my Blue play-through.
  • Probably unpopular opinion but Fearow is VERY overrated imo. I found myself struggling with only having Peck and Fury Attack for so long before the coveted Drill Peck (at friggin level 34). Sure most threats can easily be taken on early game with just those moves alone, but I rarely 1 shot things so it felt like an RNG fest hoping for Crits to carry me. It's funny because I got Fly before Drill Peck. I'm almost to the point where Fearow falls off though so I fear I could have had a more efficient run using something else.
    • Having said that, I've always raised Pidgeot in my Yellow play-throughs and this isn't much different, so maybe the early birds are just meant to be replaced sooner than later
  • Raticate is amazing with Hyper Fang. Never used it before in a run and I realize how useful it is. Throw dig on it and it just cleans house up through the 30s.
  • Butterfree was great but I'm so used to it having Confusion first thing. It was hilarious to have to level it up twice to finally have that move for Brock. Butter fell off much as predicted towards the mid-game but having so many powder moves (especially sleep) was awesome early on. Sleep is still so OP this gen.
    • Still crazy to me it learns Psybeam so late no matter which game you play; just play Abra line at that point
  • The Nidos not getting Double Kick early on was a bummer, but it did make me have to figure out how to beat Brock more creatively. I'm so used to just using that to basically skip Brock.
    • Once they get TMs the game basically is solved, but boy do they chug more of them in this game for me than in Yellow
  • Skipping on Pikachu for the first time ever in a Gen 1 game was PAINFUL. I didn't realize how many things rely on electricity (especially if you don't opt to use your Thunderbolt TM sooner). The lack of other electric options early on is definitely felt. Even just a simple Thundershock does wonders (and if they made Water Gun into a TM, I kind of wish they did the same for that move)
  • I skipped raising most of the rest of the early Dex this go-around for some variety, and boy was that felt. I normally raise an Abra and a Magikarp to get their evolutions early on, but not doing so felt like a huge nerf to my teams. I guess I'm just so used to being overpowered in the early-mid game. I'll probably do a more optimized team like this for a my next Blue/Yellow play-through, but this has been an interesting experience for a change.
  • Karate Chop is the bane of my existence...that's all. Those early crits from Mankey and the Machop line were brutal
  • I was thinking to replace my Venasaur with an Exeggcute, but wow that Pokemon is NOT ideal for a play-through. Its only realistic offensive moves are the Psychic TM and the Egg Bomb TM, so you really feel the squeeze on raising it (almost as bad as raising a Dratini imo). I just got it and now I'm having second thoughts on using it for this play-through considering the effort required to get it up to speed.
  • Having used Blastoise in Yellow every play-through, I never realized how many great water options you have to choose from. I've had a hard time figuring out who I want my "surfer" to be between Slowbro, Starmie, and Tentacruel. It'll probably be one of the Psychic types since Poison is so bad.
  • Jynx is amazing to trade for. I've always wanted to actually use one in a play-through, but Yellow was so stingy with its weird exclusions. Rushing to grab a Super Rod after beating Snorlax and fishing in Celedon's pond, it was exciting to finally get one up and going.
  • The rival fights have been pretty hilariously easy (even compared to Yellow's). I swear, the number of times he used Teleport and Roar against me was insane and made for some cheap wins. The AI definitely benefited from improvements down the line.

That's all I can think of for now! Thanks for reading. I'm very excited to get into the last third of the game and see what else is different from the later entries. :)

They call me General Surge

Beat the game using only electric mons.

Rules:

  • Can only use Electric pokemon in battle after I get to a point where I can catch first one (Pikachu in Viridian forest)
  • No items in battle
  • Set mode
  • Goal was to beat the game my minimizing the level of my highest level pokemon

Runthrough:

  • Brock was really tough had to grind pikachu to level 18 in viridian forest before I could win
  • After that the run was suprisingly easy, electric pokemon are quite strong.
  • Beat Elite 4 first try without even using my rare candies, Zapdos was only needed for Lance.
  • MVP was electabuzz who learns psychic to provide much needed type variety and a special attack against ground pokemon.

What's good against Brock?

I chose Charmander as my starter and am going for the retroachievement where I have to beat Brock with level 14 or lower Pokemon in set mode. In FireRed I picked up a Mankey that solo'd Brock, but I'm not sure what to grab in Red.

Edit: Thanks for all the answers. Mankey isn't an option in Red, and Nidoran(M) doesn't learn double kick until level 43. The achievement required 2 or less mons (since Brock has 2) at level 14 or lower. I didn't want to lose one either if I could help it for lore purposes.

Charmander/Butterfree level 13 each.

Started with Charmander, spammed ember until Geodude was dead (luckily he used defense curl 4-5 times in a row), got a few ember chips on Onix before I had to swap to Butterfree for the win.

Obviously an easy fight but was closer than I would have thought. I'm not nuzlocking but I'm going for chieves and if I mess one up I'm not reloading, so it was a bit of a clencher for a sec.

I beat (most of) Pokémon Red using only glitched Pokémon. It was the weirdest playthrough I've ever had in a Pokémon game.

And by glitch Pokémon, I mean Pokemon that are literally glitches, not real Pokémon that can be obtained by glitches. You can see the full Gen I list here.

On one hand, it's kind of absurd that there are over 60 glitch Pokémon in Gen I. On the other hand, the Gen I games are obviously notorious for being profoundly broken, so I guess it shouldn't be surprising that no other generation has anywhere near this number of glitch Pokémon.

Most of these Pokémon are unobtainable or will crash the game, unfortunately. I managed to find six Pokémon that are usable in battle, although there are at least a few more that can be used as well, if I'm understanding correctly.

The team I used had a wide range of stats. The worst one I used was probably "▶ A", as seen here. Exceptional Speed stat, but garbage at everything else. Meanwhile, the MVP of the team was "ゥ .4", as seen here. Just an obscene amount of HP and Defense, with solid Attack and Speed to boot.

I played the game as normal for the first three gyms, and then, right before Erika, I started utilizing the Old Man, MissingNo., Ditto, and Mew glitches to assemble the party. Along the way, I ran into issues with multiple Pokémon and didn't think they were usable, only to figure out what went wrong and solve it, thankfully.

After I did this playthrough, someone told me it's possible to go out of bounds as soon as Pewter City, and you can obtain glitch Pokémon even earlier. Darn. Now I know for next time I guess.

ALT TEXT: This post features a collection of seven different images, most of which are screenshots from Pokémon Red itself. The first image features Gym Leader Erika's sprite after being defeated, which has been rearranged into several pieces and made to be out of order, likely due to the usage of the glitch Pokémon MissingNo. The second image shows glitch Pokémon "M", which has the typing "Bird" and Normal. The third image shows the evolution tree for glitch Pokémon "M", with two different paths possible. The first path shows that it will evolve into Kangaskhan if given a Rare Candy at Level 0. The second path shows that it will evolve into Clefairy at Level 128 if given a Rare Candy, and then Clefairy evolves into Clefable with a Moon Stone (as it normally does). The fourth image is a screenshot of a Bulbapedia page, showing the importance of catching a Magneton before attempting to catch the glitch Pokémon called "ゥ .4". Otherwise, upon capture of "ゥ .4", the game will open its Pokédex entry and play a chaotic glitch song that never ends, which prevents the player from proceeding further in the game. The fifth image shows the typing for glitch Pokémon "ゥ .4", which is "PokéManiac". The sixth image shows the moveset that glitch Pokémon currently knows, including "TM28" and "N". The seventh and final image shows the fully assembled glitch Pokémon team from the party screen, some of which have random NPC sprites instead of Pokémon sprites. To the side of this is Patrick Star from the TV show SpongeBob SquarePants, holding an ice cream cone and yelling "Who are you people?!"

Not since I was a kid, I finally caught them all again. All 151. And that’s every Pokémon ever to me! 😄

I so wish this would have been possible in the original game. 🥹

Finished Pokémon Red

Started this to combat the boredom that came with no phone rule in Texas and finally finished it just in time for graduation.

Dragonite was obviously the MVP and carried the whole team.

GigaGlorpGenlocke - Finale

Holy, we did it Glorps! The E4 and Champion are defeated!!! It was so close (jk). The team was the same as last time, but instead of Nidoking I used Snorlax. The MVP was Starmie by a long shot. Glorp killed 3/5 Loreli's Team, all of Bruno's and Agatha's and a good majority of Lance's. Snorlax squashed Loreli's Jynx and Gyarados helped kill her Lapras and Lance's Gyarados.

When it came to the Champion fight, Starmie killed the rivals Pidgeot, Alakazam and Rhydon. Fearow and Snorlax scrambled the Eggs and Gyarados killed his Gyarados and Charizard. Congratulations on these Glorps on becoming Champion and can't wait to see them in Pokemon Blue!!!

Rest In Peace to the 4 Glorps of Honor. Ivysaur, Gloom, Alakazam and Diglett may you watch down on your brethren and show them the light of victory through this journey.

Now for Pokemon Blue, my team will be transferred in at level 5 with their proper level up movesets! Me and the Glorps pledge to defeat the Rival once again to be Champion once again! But until that happens, we must start at the beginning once again. On the next episode of the GigaGlorpGenlocke, we start our journey in Pokemon Blue! Until then, Keep On Glorpin It!!!
