Should I be concerned?

This little guy has been sitting on this rock for at least 90 minutes. He’s definitely bigger than a dollar bill, so I’m not really concerned about if he’s old enough to be on his own. We have a good population of them here at work, so it’s not unusual to see them. But it’s weird that he has not moved even with literally hundreds of people walking by. He seems to be breathing normally and his little ears twitch when he hears something so he’s alert… should I be concerned that he hasn’t run away?

I don’t know if this actually needs the warning but juuust in case 🤣

Since I’m more recently (last few months) understanding and learning more about opossums, I’ve been very observant of the things I notice of the little ones that visit my porch each night. They first started showing up in late winter, and have been coming by very frequently since. Last night I noticed this one has something back behind their legs- the answer might be obvious, but I just wanna be certain! Are those what I think they are? 👀😂 there’s another opossum almost twice as big as this one, but what I think are the second opossum’s testicles are like half the size of this one’s (if this is this one’s testicles LOL)

My first post on here called this opossum “Eve”- and I wanna say that even if this is a boy, Eve is still the name. 😝 This is the first opossum I ever saw visiting so that’s why they have that name. It’s stuck by now.

I read that they can retract their testicles when cold, so if that is what these are, I would guess that I hadn’t seen them until now because the opossums first came around during winter and it’s only recently started being warm again at night?

If those AREN’T little dangly bits then what the heck is that and do I need to be concerned lmao

My nightly visitor

My friend here comes every night to snack on nuts from the bird feeder. Tonight I saw him on the camera and was able to get this video. Such a cutie!!!
This one seems pretty large. Does he look older, or is that impossible to tell? Mostly just wanted to share this video!

Possums in Shed

Hello everyone,

Long story short. My brother in law has possums in his shed. He has been in hospital with lymphoma and has not been able to keep the area clear and clean.

The possum made herself at home and had babies. The box and bed were there for a cat 😂

Is it safe to relocate them to the rural side of the fence or it it going to put them in too much stress? We contacted animal control who said they would euthanize them instead of moving. As an animal lover I said no way.

There are kids that are now at the house using the pool and I’m afraid keeping the possums there could be recipe for an accident.

Any advice or ideas?

Should I help her?

my yard camera has picked up this little sweetie. Hard to tell how small she is. She drinks water from the dish but doesn’t eat. I leave fruit and veggies out for the critters if they’re about to go bad but she’s not interested. She spends a lot of time sitting and pondering & doesn’t go far from her home under our deck. I have not seen mama in weeks. She used to come by with a belly full of babies & I assume this is one of them. I just want her to be okay as it seems she isn’t eating & is quite small.

Possum destroying garden

I was hoping you all may be able to provide some advice for dealing with a possum friend. I live in an urban environment and have a garden which I put significant effort into. A possum or possums have made a habit of digging up the very loose soil of the garden and my flower pots in search of grubs on a near nightly basis. This activity is destroying my efforts multiple times a week and is incredibly frustrating. The flower pots are effectively 100%wrecked each time. While I prefer not to trap or kill the possum as a solution I also will not consider poisoning my yard to prevent grubs from growing. When I happen on the possum I do try and shoo it out of the garden as friendly as possible but it does not have much effect long-term.

Any suggestions before I move to trap and relocate which I know can have poor consequences for them?

What’s wrong with this little guy?

Was getting ready to run our kid to school this morning and saw this guy doing circles in our front yard. He’s currently been at it well over 15 minutes and will only stop for a few seconds or so until he resumes the spins. If something is wrong, is there anything we can do to help or what’s the next step?

[Update Edit]
Ya’ll I wish this was a better update, but I have some sad news. After having seen 2-3 comments explaining it was more than likely neurological damage (correct assumption about the road), I had downsized Reddit and was literally looking up a rehabber or rescue to call and before I could even finish typing out the search a car came by and hit it 😭 It died on impact and there was absolutely nothing I could do. Since I have a small kid I couldn’t just approach it, especially not really knowing what’s wrong. I didn’t want to risk it hurting me or my kid, or scaring it even more, so I was trying to find a way to isolate it while googling and it happened. I wish there was a different outcome, but at least I know now what is going on if I ever see something like that again and can take steps to help faster. Thank you everyone for all the advice.

Rat Poison

I wanted to share something important for anyone using rodent poison around their home or property.

Rodenticides don’t just stay with rats and mice. When a poisoned rodent is eaten by wildlife, the toxin moves up the food chain. This is called secondary poisoning, and it can seriously harm or kill animals like owls, hawks, possums, skunks, raccoons, foxes, and even larger predators.

There have been documented cases of wildlife exposure across the U.S., especially with stronger, long-lasting poisons. These chemicals can remain active in the body of a rodent long after it’s been poisoned, which is what makes them so dangerous to other animals that scavenge or hunt them.

Because of this, some states — including California — have taken action to restrict certain types of rodenticides (especially second-generation anticoagulants) in order to protect wildlife populations.

I’m not posting this to judge anyone’s choices, just to raise awareness. Many people don’t realize how far the impact can reach once poison enters the environment.

If anyone is dealing with rodent issues, there are also non-poison options (traps, sealing entry points, habitat control) that can reduce harm to wildlife.

AHN is a great resource if you notice an animal needing help. Always contact multiple rehabbers at a time because of their schedules.

Ahnow.org

State wildlife websites also provide resources for rehabbers and help ❤️🐾

He's about the size of a strawberry but he wants you to know he's NOT scared 🥺 That tiny open-mouth hiss is called "gaping" — it's a bluff baby opossums use to look scary to predators. Spoiler: it doesn't work when you're this cute.

Possums??

I find it funny this sub is called possums but i have not found a picture of a single possum. Opossums on the other hand, yes. Possums are in Australia opossums are in North America. Possums are wonderful creatures and need our help to not go extinct. It would be great to see a ton of people talking about them!

Also how do you guys feel about pet stores giving out opossums? Im in NC and they are protected because they are a native species. Some people are just grabbing them from outside. Anyone else concerned about that like I am?

Rehabber or release?

Hi all! I accidentally trapped this little guy when trying to trap a rat instead. Do you think he needs to be rehabilitated or is he old enough to be released? I currently have him in a bin with a heating pad on low under him. What do I do? I had grapes in the trap and he ate them
