Thinking of dropping down to part time study because work is too overwhelming

I am currently doing four units while trying to maintain a thirty hour work week at my retail job to pay rent. My grades are starting to suffer and I am constantly exhausted trying to keep up with lecture recordings. Has anyone made the switch to doing just two units a semester and did it significantly improve your mental health or just drag out the pain of university?

Sadness

Hello, It's me again. I'll keep this one short and sweet, is anyone just feeling sad from uni? I can't wait for this semester to be over, I need this weight off my shoulders whether I pass everything or not honestly. My mental health has just gone so far downhill and is impacting my personality with friends, family and co-workers.

Edit: Thank you for the encouraging words, also this is for the people out there that may feel alone, don't you worry.

Saw this floating around and figured I’d share because petrol prices are crazy right now and free money is free money 😂

ING are currently offering anyone who signs up before May 31st a $100 bonus. No catches other than doing a few easy things once your account’s open. Here’s the breakdown:

  1. Use the following link to sign up - Link here
  2. Deposit $1000 (you can transfer out once you receive your $100 bonus)
  3. Make 5 purchases - Just use the card you get sent on your weekly shopping (split the transaction into 5 payments at checkout)
  4. Open a savings maximiser account and deposit $1 into it (you can do this straight away once you sign up they walk you through everything)

Then you just sit back and wait for ING to drop that $100 straight into your account. You can transfer it to your main bank, or spend it with the ING card, up to you.

Took me less than 10 minutes to do everything and it’s one of the easiest bonuses I’ve seen. Longest part is waiting for the card to arrive but once you have it you can just use it with your regular shopping for 1 week.

disappointed abt my mark

hellooo all. i am a first year student studying law.. my grades have been pretty good, with distinctions across all of my assignments so far! im very proud of myself for that.. however.. i just received my mark for llb140 (human rights law) and.. yeesh.
i passed. barely. 52%.
ive heard from friends that they were also pretty disappointed from their marks so im glad to know im not the only one.
i hold myself to pretty high standards and i study alot.. so seeing that grade rlly bummed me out. maybe i just got a tough marker (my feedback seemed pretty bleh. im not sure exactly what i couldve done better) but im not trying to absolve blame for myself.
how do u guys deal with this? i know the obvious answer is to just “get up and dust urself off and try again” or whatever but even with that mindset this sort of failure is still in the back of my mind. im really doubting my abilities here bc of this. pls help lol

Special Consideration for DV

Keep it short and sweet. I was in a DV relationship for part of my degree and am only really on the other side of it now. Its been 2-3 years since the events took place however during that time I performed pretty badly in some semesters. I will have documentation from my psychologist, however does anyone know how successful a special consideration request like this can be? It wont massively change my overall GPA but it does also feel unfair to myself not to try.

Any previous experience or advice would be appreciated!

Got a cooked exam timetable? Let me map out your study plan.

If the QUT exam timetable gods blessed you with an absolutely atrocious exam timetable drop it in the comments and I’ll build your exam plan for you.

Just comment your:
Subject name,
Exam date and difficulty [1-5, 1 being crammable in 1 night and 5 is going to make you an academic victim], and
How many hours per day you’re going to study.

Drop your comments below I’ll reply with a breakdown day by day for you.

Why is QUT You an absolute mandatory requirement for graduation?

I cannot understand why we are forced to waste time and tuition money on a generic, fluff unit like QUT You. It has zero practical relevance to my actual degree, the modules feel like they were written for middle school students, and the marking feels completely arbitrary

[Advice needed: Possible missing student]

Hi all, I am writing out of sheer desperation. I am the sister of a QUT student and I’ve not heard from them in over a week. No messages replied or reacted, none.

Does anybody have any information what’s the best way to contact the school or any advice pertaining to getting help to possibly doing a welfare check?

They live alone and my biggest fear is something has happened and there’s no one available to render help. I also do not have any info on their friends. My mind is racing with crazy thoughts, I do not know if their phone is stolen, or they are missing, or they are just stressed and not replying, have they fainted in the apartment ???

Please, any help is much appreciated. I am doing this as a last resort before physically flying over.

Update: I have finally received a reply after sharing that we will be proceeding with contacting the school and police for welfare check. We got a curt “Leave me alone.” in our family WhatsApp group and I have no reason to believe it’s somebody else. I think they are just stressed from the recent canvas situation and having to deal with assignments and exams. Regardless, thank you to everyone who has taken the time to reply and reach out. I am now much better prepared with knowledge on the appropriate folks and process to reach out to for help. Thank you and please take care everyone, you have folks who care for you and love you 🫶🏼

Really struggling with my computer science degree right now and would really appreciate some advice.

Python is the only language I’m reasonably comfortable with, but languages like C# and javascript are really difficult for me for some reason. I’m not sure whether I should quit this degree because I like IT, but I also don’t know what I want to do after graduating anyway. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Use of AI

Marker here - Am I welcome?

Anyway - Just want to say - I understand how stressful uni life can be. But please don't think markers can't see through AI generated assignments. They are obvious - Some students even forget to remove ai prompts, one assignment even had the words "As an AI, I don't......"

Student life is hard. But shortcuts are not invisible - and does have consequences

Law summer units

Can any later year law students advise if the Law School offers summer units? I’m currently first year.
Just trying to juggle part time study with work and family and to have some idea could help.

The toilet situation

Hey all,

I was at the KG library late last night, and the bathrooms got me bothered.

In an attempt to use some of my nervous energy into doing something useful other than being stressed, I decided to clean them with whatever cleaning stuff I had at home.

I know this has been an ongoing issue for years. My mum is an ex student and warned me they were bad. I've found posts dating back years complaining about them as well.

I do get it, I'm not expecting them to be spotless. I do acknowledge that the library is particularly at risk because they are open 24/7. But the amount of junk, toilet paper, etc is a lot. It doesn't help that the seats are generally worn out from wear and tear either.

I also understand that there are cultural loo etiquette differences that make things worse.

However, I believe the appropriate response would be to maintain them more frequently.

I'm wondering what the uni is aware of this issue, and if so, what has been done about it.

Also just to be clear, I have a lot of respect for all cleaners. They are the salt of the earth, and some of the hardest working people you will meet. I don't blame them at all. I would like to know whether they are given a reasonable workload that allows them to to maintain the bathrooms often enough.

First year business student

what are some good qualifications that I can complete at home that look really good on linkedin preferably for finance and accounting careers. I've only got retail experience at the moment so it would be nice having a few skills and certifications more aligned with my career.

CAB301 is probably the most poorly managed unit I’ve had

The original second assignment has been extended by faculty for two weeks, partially because the autograder wasn’t up. They’ve taken down the autograder early because they set it to expire at the wrong time. I’m almost done with my code but can’t test it until they reopen it. There is a 48 hour extension, but it’s not available to anyone because the autograder is down. This is infuriating

Stressed and overwhelmed

hey sorry if this sounds like complaining and insanely privileged but I just need to say this to someone!!! I am so so so stressed over uni and ive been procrastinating all of my assignments. my marks right now are slightly above average but not good enough for me. Im in first year and thought uni was gonna be so much better than high school but I'm honestly way more overwhelmed than ever before. I can decide if I wanna take a semester off or idk. I'm actually enjoying my degree it's just the pressure of assignments and can't actually bring myself to go into uni physically. I'm honestly just so tired as I work full time right now and have no financial help. I went to uni straight out of high school and I feel like everyone else knows what's going on except me. is anyone else feeling the same??? also does anyone have suggestions on what to do in this situation?

Experience with TPP?

I'm going to be starting a tertiary pathway program soon but I am unsure of the workload and commitment. Can't seem to get many clear answers.

For someone working ≈20-25 hours per week, is this a disaster to go full time? I am thinking I will have to go part time study because of the work load and also because I need space to focus on my statistics elective. I'm still getting better at maths and haven't touched stats in over a decade.

What was TPP like for you? Is it better to just tank it out full time? My actual degree I will be doing full time anyway.

withdrawing from units

hello,
so i’m currently in year 2 semester 1 of my course and im fkn hating it. i’ve decided my next course and what im going to do, but i just want some second opinions on what ive been thinking on. for context, im in a health course and am going to change to a bussiness one next year.

i am wanting to withdraw from my courses this sem (i understand that i’ve missed both census dates and i will have academic and financial penalty) because i honestly am so clocked out atm and want to focus on family and work. i also know i can infernal transfer or just apply through qtac as well. should i just withdraw and apply through qtac or finish this sem and internal transfer? does ‘withdraw’ on my academic record really affect anything at all?

pls let me know

QUT & my Teaching staffs response to this outage is ridiculous

To preface this, I'm an undergraduate student maintaining a 6 GPA whilst working 5 days a week & studying full time. The loss of an entire weekend & QUT's "response" of only giving extensions until wednesday of this week is ridiculous. I understand further correspondence hasn't happened yet. But, for those of us who rely on the weekends & have mountains of work coming up the next two weeks, a pathetic 3 day extension just isn't enough. If we don't see something adequate today in terms of due date adjustments I'm game to riot if y'all are as well. I'm talking AT LEAST a week.

As for my teaching staff, only ONE of my 4 units has provided us with assessment materials to help us work through this, & that assessment isn't due until June!

Sorry for the rant, but coping with full time work & study is a lot for all of us who don't have the privilege of time. Do better QUT
