Social setting at QUT

Hey, as a new person at QUT, I find the social and cultural environment here quite odd. I’ve noticed that people barely interact with each other. I’m not sure if it’s specific to my master’s program, but I find it kind of unamusing.
One of my friends at UQ said there’s much more interaction among students and way more club and social activities there. I went to a club event here, and only five people showed up. I also went to a trivia night, but it seemed like people already had their own circles, and it was quite difficult to get into them.
Any suggestions on how I could improve my social experience here? Or do you think it’s partly my fault?

Looking for Mature-Aged Students (26+) to take part in my Honours Survey!!

Hello! I am in need for Mature aged students (aged 26+) that are currently studying at an Australian university to take part in a survey for my honours project.

Eligibility: Current Australian University student, over the age of 26

The current study is interested in how belonging, loneliness and barriers contribute to academic adjustment and intention to persist.

Participation is entirely voluntary and no incentive is provided. No identifiable data will be collected. The survey should take around 30 minutes.

Should you participate in this study, you will be asked to complete 96 questions on an online survey. These questions will ask about you about feelings of belonging, loneliness, study persistence and academic adjustment at university. Additionally, you will be asked some demographics questions about your age, gender, employment status, marital status, whether you have any dependants (children/other), mode of study (online/ in person), whether you study part-time or full-time and the university you are currently enrolled in.

This research will ask questions about your experience as a student, perceived loneliness and feelings of belonging/not belonging. If you anticipate these questions causing you distress you may want to reconsider participating in this study.

Participation is entirely voluntary, and you have full control over your involvement, your decision to participate, as well as the responses you provide.

Any participation is greatly appreciated!

Please click the following link to access the survey, information sheet and consent form.

Engineering Students: Has anyone used their Complementary Studies block for short-term study abroad

Hey guys, Civil Eng student here looking at doing the 3 week Korea University Winter Campus program this summer.

My study plan says my 48cp Complementary Studies block must be an "Engineering Minor". Does QUT let you bypass this and get Unspecified Exchange Credit instead if you study abroad for a short term program? Or am I locked into an engineering minor?

Anyone with any experience or info about this?

Thanks so much!

DSB102 - Intro to machine learning

I have zero idea what I’m doing in this class. I leave the lectures so confused, I leave the tutorials after doing a bunch of copy pasting and not actually understanding what I’m doing.

A bunch of us bought it up to the lecturer and he very much wiped his hands of it.

I don’t even know what I don’t know to ask questions

Does anyone have any resources or know any tutors who can explain things to me?

Is anyone else utterly confused by this subject?

Why can’t the gym and library be exclusive!!

Note: This will come out as a rant because at this point it is one.

So just as the title says why can’t the gym and library at both the campuses be exclusive to only students and staff!! I am a current student and an avid user of both the services. And not only once but several times I have experienced some really shitty things. First of all there’s like random people roaming around in the library during the evening (sometimes even during the day) performing their bloody shenanigans.

However, the worst experience is with the outsiders in the gym. I have literally had nothing but disappointment ever since I started using the gym from last year. Why do these stupid outsiders who are neither students or staff feel so strongly entitled towards the machines they are using. Half the times these are people who have no experience of working out at all. By performing exercises with a wrong posture they risk injuring themselves but also damaging the machine they are using, not allowing others to use it at all. And before any one of you ask me, how do I know that they are not students/staff because I literally ask them when they are being rude to me. And guess what 5 times out of 5 they have turned out to be people who are neither staff nor students. Like, what the hell does a person have to do to enjoy their workout at this point in this gym!! Plus why’s there such a negligible difference between the amount paid by outsiders and students. If anything make it cheaper for students and expensive for outsiders!!

And please don’t start commenting at me, asking to just change the times/ the gym altogether. If I could I would have done it but it doesn’t adjust properly in my weekly schedule. It’s just horrendous!!

ABB122 - help/guidance requested

Hi all,

I am completing ABB122 - Measurement for Construction, I am week 5 in, and no matter how many times I’ve watched the lectures and I’ve attended my tutorials I just don’t understand what I’m doing.

I am completing my first assessment and I fear I am doing it completely wrong, I have reached out for help and I am meeting with the unit coordinator for guidance but anyone who has completed this unit or is currently completing it could share any help, tips and any guidance for this subject as I’m struggling to understand it and do not want to fail it.

TIA

Is a Bachelor of engineering (honours)/bachelor of business worth it?

I am currently finishing year 12 and wanting to go into engineering (specifically I am thinking mechatronic but I don’t really know yet). I want to get into project management but I would also like wide skillset is a Bachelor of engineering (honours)/bachelor of business worth it? Or would I be better just sticking to a bachelor of engineering (honours)?

Realistically, how hard is it to do 5 units in 1 semester?

I’m transferring over from biomed into medlab starting next semester, which share most of the same first year subjects save for 1 unit which is included in medlab and not biomed. I’ll be starting from year 2 in medlab but will obviously need to complete the first year subject that I missed. I was thinking I might be able to balance doing the usual 4 units plus the one I’ve missed, but wanted to know if it’s worth doing that. I’m also wanting to keep my GPA up so I can keep the door open for any internship opportunities, so I don’t want doing 5 units to ruin my GPA as well

Toilets

Has anyone else noticed, the higher level you go up buildings, the cleaner they get. Sometimes I have the balls to rawdog a toilet in zblock level 9, its just that pristine.
