Is a 2024+ Ranger for me?

I drive a 2018 Highlander with about 70K miles. Bought it in the pandemic because it was what was available. It's a good, comfortable vehicle, but what I really wanted was a truck. My kids are grown, so I don't need the 2nd (or 3rd) row anymore. What I DO want to do is:

  • Haul a pair of kayaks
  • Buy mulch and other gardening supplies (pavers, other stuff like that)
  • Occasionally fit sheet goods for home projects, or maybe flooring, a door, or a window, etc.
  • move around furniture from time to time
  • Daily driver around town

I'm thinking about an XLT or Lariat 4WD. The Highlander gets 20.5MPG around town, so I don't think I'd be losing much there. I don't do a lot of highway driving.

I don't want a very big vehicle. I live in a dense suburb and don't need anything massive, and prefer to keep it smaller for parking, etc. I also don't want to spend a ton on an upgrade. Maybe sell the HL for $20-24K and get a $35-45K Ranger. I can also look at the Tacomas, but pre-2024 they were very truck feeling, 2024 has a train wreck transmission, and the new ones are both bigger and carry the Tacoma tax.

I would like to keep this truck for 10 years +. I average about 8K miles/year (or less). Another thing about my HL is, while it has no issues, that model year has a transmission known for failure, so debating dumping it now.

In short, I'm looking to break even on mileage, get more utility from the bed, not go too large, and not lose too much comfort.

Is the Ranger a good choice? Anything in the 24/25 model years to be wary of?

How To Bulletproof My 2020 XLT FX4

Hi,
I am looking for insight on how I can really make my 2020 Ranger "bulletproof." I am talking about upgrades/parts meant to keep it on the road for as long as possible. Not actual bulletproofing the panels/glass etc (lol).

My 2020 currently has 58K miles, a small 2" lift kit and bigger tires/wheels. i think I am on 31s. It recently had the CDF drum replaced maybe a year ago.

I am planning on putting extreme miles on it in the next couple of years (took a job as an outside sales rep) so will rack up miles super quick.

Any mods or parts that I should be looking to throw on?

These new trucks were not designed for drive in movie theaters.

The battery saver turns off the truck, so I have to restart the truck to turn it back to accessories for the radio

The headlights switch back to automatic when you turn the truck off and on

You can’t truly turn off the infotainment center and gauge cluster when in accessories.

Seems likes it’s not just for though as there’s a newer Colorado and a Porsche with headlights and other lights flashing off and on every once in a while. 😂

Does anyone use upgraded engine oil drain plugs?

The ones where you install and push to release oil. Avoiding brand mentions so it’s not interpreted as a sale or advertisement

Rhino T9 winch bumper and Rock sliders

I installed the Rhino 4x4 USA T9 winch bumper with a Warn EVO 12S winch, and the Rhino T9 rock sliders.

Initially I was missing a few parts from the package, it took about a month to finally get everything.

Now that everything is installed I can give a better opinion

The sliders are very solid frame mount, I had to drill several holes when installing because about half of them didn’t line up perfectly. I did a few trails in Anza Borrego and the sliders did their job and saved my rocker on the passenger side. They tuck up nice but still are useful as a step.

The bumper took a bit of work to get installed. I think it looks good and the winch is solidly mounted and easily accessible.

In case you were wondering about spacers…

When I started looking for photographs of rangers with spacers installed vs stock, I had a hard time finding pics of my exact setup. So if you have a 21-23 Ranger XLT Tremor. And are wondering what spacers will look like vs stock, here are some good comparison photos. I went with BORA spacers from www.stage3motorsports.com. 1” front, and 1.25” rear. The rear tires tuck a little more from factory than the front, and I wanted it to have a very similar “poke”. The front tires do rub against the plastic cover of the forward crash bar, but barely noticeable.

Wheel Spacers - 1” front, 1.25” rear
1.5” leveling “puck”
LT265/70-17 Recon Grappler (10k miles)

I must say for such a simple change, it does make a big difference. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Definitely a OEM+ vibe.

Audio quit suddenly

Hey I have a 2021 Ranger Tremor and the other day my audio quit working suddenly. The button on touchscreen and knob does nothing and aux cord does nothing. No symptoms before like crackling speakers. All other buttons on touchscreen work. Tried hard reset, unplugged battery for 15 minutes. Any suggestions what this could be?

Is it just me, or is there something else going on?

I drive quite a bit, 2k a month, mostly rural highway.

Was driving along, and a small bird hit the grill up high, pretty hard. Stopped to check it out and found another one in the mouth on the skid plate.

So, my question:

Has the small bird population gotten dumber over the last 3 years?

Are there more birds over the last couple of years?

Does my 2021 just suddenly need to feed?

Is there anything to help avoid it?

2020 Ranger AC not blowing cold

My 2020 Ranger AC is not blowing cold. It is cool but not cold by any means. I thought it might need a recharge so I bought a can of Arctic freeze but before I did anything I have the truck off and hooked the hose up just to get a gate of the pressure before I did anything and it is showing been 80-90 psi, or in the red of the gauge.

I have not added anything to it , just wanted to get an idea of the psi before doing anything. Does this mean I don’t need this refrigerant and that it is not low and that there is another issue besides low refrigerant ? Based on this I don’t need to add refrigerant but this is the first time that I have done this.

Finally got my first truck

At 29 years old, I finally got my first truck after wanting one for as long as I can remember. Picked up this 26 xlt in the desert sand color this week and am loving it! I wasn’t sure about the color when I saw pictures online but I instantly fell in love when I saw it in person. I’m looking into a spray in bedliner (the closest line-x is 2 and a half hours from me), running boards for my wife, and a tonneau cover.

Looking for feedback on 2023's!

Hey everyone! I recently decided to list my 2011 Xterra Pro-4X for sale and start looking into getting a 2023 Ranger. Specifically 2023 because I have less than zero interest dealing with the CDF drum problems.

I'm basically just looking for feedback on the trucks, general reliability, things to watch out for when looking at trucks, common failure points, etc. I don't plan to mod the truck extensively. Rock sliders and skids underneath, leveling kit, 33's and maybe a hidden winch if they even make a mount for that. Truck will mostly be used as a weekend camping/overlanding vehicle and for dump runs, supply pickups and general truck tasks a few times a month. I don't hit black diamond trails or do hardly any technical off roading anymore and a truck is much more practical for me right now.

This is the truck I'm currently looking at as well. Decent deal or overpriced? Thanks in advance for any information!

Mods on the Ranger

I just bought this 2019 Lariat, what I really want to do is level it out and I was thinking of buying a 2.5 Leveling kit and adding some 33x17 wheels and tires for it. Really just wondering if that’s a good idea or something I should know before hand or good recommendations. Definitely going to tint it too and was thinking 20% all around and 30% windshield.
