Evo got me

I'm so glad your community made a big appearance at Evo 2026. I didn't know much at all about this game other than seeing my brother play the original. Of course the first thought was that its just a smash copy. But, i saw a crowd of folks playing casuals at Evo and it looked pretty fun. I just bought the game this week and omfg the game is so much fun. Its incredibly difficult but feels rewarding. I spent like 40min trying to beat Kragg on hard mode.

Any tips on how to improve? I played through the tutorials, but looking for some more tips. What techniques should I master at each level/rank? For example, Diaphone made a good Street Fighter 6 video for what to work on at each rank. It was a very clear practice blueprint to follow.

I just can't do it...

Playing online feels like pulling teeth. It's either you get circle camped or platform camped like 8/10 matches and it's mentally exhausting. Feels like every person playing this game plays the game like losing a match is gonna cost them their life. I understand playing to win but some of the shit I've seen is downright disgraceful. How is it that facing zoners in traditional fighters is less boring than this?

I try camping back but I just mentally can't do it. Defense I can do, camping I cannot. I paid good money to actually play a FIGHTING game, not tag. I took a six month break from the game because of the same issues and felt like genuinely giving it another chance because there's so much about this game that gives you the potential to do something cool. Instead, people use it to maximize the most boring playstyles imaginable because it's easier.

Pros playing like that for money I can understand but playing like that thinking you're gonna inch your platinum ranked ass any closer to the top is straight up delusion. Just play the game and try to refine your skills other than the ability to run away. Top level play doesn't look nearly as campy.

Until shields and obnoxious things like Lox grab range (as one example) get nerfed, I'm out.

  4. Snake breadsticks are a popular, spooky-themed appetizer or party treat typically made from unbaked pizza dough or crescent rolls. Shaped into slithering coils or wrapped around wooden skewers, they are decorated with olive or peppercorn eyes.

  5. The Giant Gummy Snake from Vat19 is a 2.5-foot-long, 1.6-pound confection featuring a dual-flavor, two-toned design.

  6. Biona Organic Sour Snakes are 100% organic, vegan-friendly gummy candies that use fruit pectin instead of gelatine.

  8. A Spooky Calzone Snake is a festive Halloween-themed dinner that turns standard pizza dough and fillings into an edible, scaly serpent.

Down but not out; snack break!

Official Move Names?

Is there a place to see all the names/descriptions of character attacks? Do they even have official names?
For commentary, I find it very non-engaging to hear commentators say "neutral special."
We say "Falcon Punch" and "Charge Shot" in Smash, so why not the same for Rivals?

Gouie has revitalized my passion for this game

I've played Kirby since Melee in 2008. He sucks bad in Melee but I do my best to learn all the tech I can to just have even a chance at taking a stock. In PM and P+ he was so significantly better however I wasn't really into Kirby as much as I am today. Now that Rivals 2 is releasing a Kirby inspired character it feels like I will finally be able to play something so close to Kirby but with the likelihood the character is a legitimate threat, potentially a Kirby 64 situation where he's even high tier. Can't wait to play Gouie!

Let’s talk Commentary

This is gonna be a long one so buckle up. I’ve harbored these thoughts on commentary for a long time having watched melee’s steadily decline (imo) for years now. Unfortunately I’m all-too-aware of how much commentary dictates the viewing experience in any sport or broadcasted form of competition and I wanted to share some unsolicited thoughts.

Tone and excitement are the most important things in commentary. Currently watching every single match of the World Cup because I grew up playing soccer and am a huge fan of sports and competition in general. Because Fubo is so much cheaper than yttv or Hulu, I’ve watched every game in Spanish. I at most understand a word every now and then. But the commentary is still super important to the viewing experience. As soon as the voices elevate and the tone shifts towards excitement, I automatically look up and lock in if I’ve drifted into my phone or steamdeck. Soccer is considered boring as hell by most but when you know what’s going on, any time the ball gets on the quarter of the field closest to the goal, it’s exciting. Commentator’s reflect that appropriately with tone. Because of Fubo I’m all the more aware of how little what the fuck the commentators are saying matters and how much how they say it does.

Formulaic back and forth commentary for the sake of filling space is not good commentary. Many esports commentators just fall into this pattern where one simply says a bunch of words for about a minute until they tire out and then the other picks it up and does the same thing. This kind of commentary though common misses the mark imo and actually takes away from the match. Good commentary is an art form and sometimes I feel like our best commentators like Jett, Brosa, Fabz, Flamberick or Nurse don’t get the recognition they deserve because so many aren’t attuned to what works best.

Scar and Toph, Ludwig and Slime, Yipes and Lee Chung, Nice Wigg and Greek are examples of top tier commentator duos in esports who work so well. And it’s because they don’t fall into the common pitfalls that make for bad commentary. Above all they bring Hype and Excitement when warranted, but they are also objectively funny, relatable, and largely meet the viewer where they’re at. There is such a thing as too much excitement though, even though it’s far better than too little. Jorge in melee is a good example. Quite a few got annoyed at how insanely excited he got for moments and felt the need to share it online. I, however, loved it. I was probably most engaged in melee sets where Jorge was justifiably losing his shit over something so awesome occurring on screen. But there is a limit in terms of mass appeal, clearly. Conversely, I actually don’t prefer HomeMadeWaffles who used to get hype a long time ago, but because he’s done it for so long he hardly ever elevates his tone or expresses excitement in exciting moments. Thats one of those legacy types who is an awesome person, but imo just doesn’t have the passion for the game like he once did. Same thing could maybe even be said for TKBreezy in relation to Ultimate.

All this is to say, commentary is very pivotal to the viewing experience and though I think Dan did fine and I do appreciate everything he’s done, what we need most in top 8’s, especially top 4’s, is hype and excitement. The most memorable moments in all of sports or esports are accompanied by commentary that matches the hype of what’s on the screen. Great Commentary is more important than most realize.

TL;DR good commentary is important and what’s most important in commentary is excitement, tone, and hype. Forgive me for the wall of text, I’m waiting to meet up with friends for the 4th and had the spare time

Zeke has been running the Zeekly since the launch of the game, but now it includes an amateur bracket where you can play as much or as little as you like until time is called for top cut!

I was going through my phone and found a video (and photos) I took from when Ranno was revealed for Rivals 1 at Super Smash Con in 2017!

I bought the game on sale and I'm really enjoying it. 🙃

I've been playing a lot, but I'm having quite a hard time with counter-attacks—still, the game is really good. 🫡🙃

Rivals Characters by Popularity (and Friendliness!)

Heya Rivals reddit! There were a couple of posts commenting on character popularity/how nice people are online, so with the season ending in a few days (and also because I just finally broke diamond) I figured this would be as good a time as any to share some stats I've been collecting for a while now, since Dan still won't give me the data I CRAVE (love ya Dan <3).

I started recording info about players back around the time Olympia released, wanting to take some notes about the people I kept running into and not adapting to in time (shoutouts to a Zetterburn that took several sets off of me with basically exclusively fullhop -> dj fakeout -> dair), and it turned into a whole little side project so here ya go!

Methodology:

Data was collected entirely from ranked matches in Northeastern US (Newark, Ashburn, Toronto, and to a lesser extent Chicago), centered around my elo as I climbed through plat. Every individual player tag matches to a list of mains and a "Joy" score, ranging from -3 to +3. For the Joy score it's a bit soft but I tried to keep a consistent rubric -- I always opened the match with a "Hello!" and responded with "Good luck!" and "Good game!" if they kept up the conversation. The scoring then went like so:

+3: Using lots of messages to keep up the vibe/hype up my plays, adding me after the match to congratulate/ask to practice

+2: Saying hi and good luck without prompting, tossing out a GG after a loss

+1: Saying hi back, then just getting to into the game

+0: No response of any kind

-1: Taunting after an SD/every win, occasional t-bagging

-2: Actively hostile play (large portions of the game running away/camping top plats orunder the stage while down at least a stock), constant t-bagging

-3: Aggressively spamming rude/salty messages, adding me after the match to flame

Takeaways:

There's definitely a "big 3" of characters you run into -- big 5 if you count Lox, and La Reina's absolutely meteoric rise since release. Beyond that, a pretty solid spread but with a relatively steep dropoff, which made some of the characters at the bottom feel like a very rare sighting. And holy moly the bears are extinct in the northeast, we gotta do something about those icecaps

As for joy -- contrary to what you might hear online, Rivals players are in fact overall quite friendly! Yes, even the Clairen mains. With a weighted average Joy score of .74, every single character was well above breaking even, which I think is awesome. I also rarely experienced people playing even moderately campy or hostile. I suspect that has a lot to do with just opening up the match with a simple friendly hello, so I definitely recommend you guys all try vibing with your opponents a bit while you play -- it may not take much to have a better time! And if being nice even slightly decreases the chance of someone playing Evil Rivals into you, isn't that worth it?

Anyways cheers to all my fellow ranked grinders, and good luck in the last few days of the season!
