Genuine Runna Review

Anyone that uses or used Runna, do you find it worth it? I just ran the Brooklyn half off a training template from online and running the NYC Marathon this year and was debating trying it out for marathon training. I ran D3 in college so I still know the basics of training but was curious if it was fun to use and worth it for training.

Sore from Running-Specific HIIT workout. Shoud I do my interval training today?

4 weeks ago - Half marathon

3-1 weeks ago - recovery plan

This week - week 1 of mileage plan that i turned into a deload week due to work schedule and vacation tomorrow.

I did a running-specific HIIT workout Wednesday. Was so sore yesterday when doing an easy run. Still a bit sore now, roughly 30% of yesterday. Leaving for vacation tomorrow. Should I do my interval run today? I won't be running until next Thursday due to being alone on vacation with my young child.

"Donating" Race Shirts

Does anyone ever know where the shirts go after we throw them in bins? Was curious.

Reason I ask is because epsecially recently, there seems to always be a discussion about "donating" race shirts instead of throwing them out. For instance, the recent NYRR Bklyn Half shirt i noticed people getting upset with the OP because they mentioned throwing it out instead of donating.

Who do ppl think are actually getting these shirts? I know the idea is amazing to think of but I can't imagine any family seeing that NYRR Half shirt and being like yea that would look good on my kid.

Hyrox NYC Mens Pro DUO - Need a Partner - Or get both slots - June 06.

I'm looking at two options for this. My hyrox partner got injured and cant make it to NY for this event. Im also on active duty orders and trying to work my way out to make it to NY.

Alternatively I can give out our Slots to people who would like to race in NY or I can try and make it, but would need to a partner for June 06. At this point im not looking to make any crazy fast times but the goal is a sub 1:10.

Williamsburg -> Prospect Park

What’s the best route from Williamsburg to Prospect Park? Doesn’t have to be the shortest, but most enjoyable for a mid-long mileage run. Any route hacks much appreciated!

Community Update & Moderator Recruiting

Hello runners!

A few updates here. We've just reached over 47,000 subscribers! Yet another huge jump in the last year. You can basically track the Running Boom by looking at our subscriber count.

But now that the spring races have mostly passed and we're nearing the start of marathon training, it's time for (potentially controversial) rule change. We've been hinting at this in the past, but feel the need to implement it before summer really begins.

No "running etiquette" rants.

At least for the near future until we can boost up the mod team. Again, this may be controversial, but we're about to be overwhelmed by them as the running boom and marathon training make the parks filled with thousands of runners. Last fall we had at least one of these posts a week, beating the same dead horse.

At a minimum, all these posts do is rile up the negativity while preaching to the choir. At it's worst, it turns into suggesting violence as a solution, witch hunts, or doxxing and online harassment - all of which have actually happened in the last 6 months. The resolution is never helpful, educational, nor does it inspire change.

From a moderator position it is very difficult to monitor, hence the need to at least pause and reevaluate. From a community position, it makes many active and helpful users here ready to leave, and can make this sub feel really toxic.

I have ideas for how to promote good running etiquette in the city, none of them great (like a Wiki link pinned to the sidebar), but IMO better than a rant 2-3 times a week.

-----------

Part 2 is that we're looking for additional mods, likely 2-3 more.

https://sh.reddit.com/r/RunNYC/application/

There's a short questionnaire to fill out if you're interested. We've hit a level where additional level-headed eyes are needed to keep the community a positive, informative, and welcoming place.

The main ask is that any new mods should have access to reddit during normal business hours -- there is no expectation to be online all the time, but the bulk of our activity happens during the day, which is where we need some help.

But also we'd like someone who is passionate about making sure to keep this community a great and positive resource for NYC runners.

-----------

Feel free to discuss, give feedback, ideas, criticisms, etc in this post. We do our best to make this a positive, welcoming, and useful community, but recognize there's a lot of judgement calls and nuance that don't always work out 100%.

RBC Half Execution errors

Just wondering if anyone else went out too hot and paid for it later in the race. I was aiming for 83 high - 84 low and ended up running 87 high. Was on pace for 84 low until 10 and had to slow it down. The 6:12 miles at 3 and 7 was above my threshold and I know that was a huge factor in my errors. Walked for about 20 secs and got back on. I held on a while but I knew before we got onto ocean that this was going to be a tough race. Very frustrating considering I’m really strong aerobically but mistakes are costing me. I’ve noticed that every time I start conservatively, I always end up having a much stronger race.

Running update for motivation

I just wanted to post here for the people out there that’s chasing dreams!

I made this reddit post little less than a year ago. At the time I was chasing these big goals that I thought were out of reach. This subreddit gave me a lot of confidence but boy if only I knew what was waiting for me.

Started training hard for Staten Island half to run the qualifier - race got cancelled. Thought I’m going to try for the next year Fred Lebow - race got cancelled. Got sick of it and signed up for Jersey city marathon for another challenge and also got into NYC half with the lottery.

Trained my butt of this brutal winter - met an amazing runner friend and also joined a local running club. Ran about 50miles a week and just overall running more and chasing those workouts!

I’m so happy to say that I ran 1:28 at NYC half and not only qualified for the marathon but also get to be local competitive.

Next up Jersey City marathon. I thought fall last year a BQ would maybe happend in 2 years. Ran a 3:11 (my BQ time is 3:25)

Safe to say NYC has made me so much faster and I’ve never loved running more. Dreams do come true and never stop believing and just keep on putting in the hard work. (As for anything in life)

App that tracks which blocks you've ran

I've always wanted to walk every block of the city but knew the overhead of tracking those walks would be a pain, so over the last couple months I made an app that checks off each block once you've walked it. Some friends wanted to try it so I just uploaded it to the App Store.

It works for all 5 boroughs and you can turn on passive tracking so that your blocks are tracked without opening the app. It treats walks and runs the same, but will filter out cycling/car movement. There's also a leaderboard so you can see how your stats compare to other New Yorkers.

The app is called WalkNYC and it's completely free. It's only on iOS right now but I'm looking into porting it to Android. Would love any feedback you all have!

Here's the link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/walknyc-walk-every-block/id6758922428

Update: As of this evening it's actually ranked #79 in the Navigation category of the App Store!

Brooklyn Half finishers - what device/app did you record your race on and what did it say your distance was?

Curious to see some comparisons.

For me, I used my Apple Watch Series 8 with the default workout app. Started and ended it within a couple of seconds of crossing the start/finish and it said my total distance was 13.27 miles (21.356 km)

Did anyone’s device say almost exactly 13.11? Anyone get an underestimate?

NYRR Race Merch

I know this is discussed a lot, but it is baffling to me how the NYRR race tops get uglier and uglier. I have thrown every single one out since 2023 (and of course generally have stopped collecting them). Can't for the life of me work out how it has been getting worse, unless NYRR are stuck with a long-term design contract they can't get out of.

Or is there a chance that the ugliness is intentional, so that people are more inclined to buy the proper merch that is for sale?

Hot take: Two race strategies for BKLYN Half

I think anyone out there offering course strategy tips for RBC BKLYN Half should treat it as two different races. Race A is if you start on waves 1 and 2. Race B is for waves 3 and 4. Like “negative split on OP.” Sure, if it’s 7:30am. At 10am, whole different story. More like “try to not pass out.”
