NYC runners doing London Marathon 2027

Hi! NYC runner here training for the London Marathon 2027! I’m running the Saturday race, but would love to connect with other New Yorkers doing either day.

I made a similar post before Berlin this year and ended up meeting some great people. We had a group chat during training, shared running tips, connected on Strava, and it was a fun way to stay accountable throughout the training cycle.

Would love to do the same thing for London!

How would you recover/maintain fitness between marathons 5 weeks apart?

I just ran the Berlin Marathon this past weekend and I’m running NYC five weeks later.

I’m not looking to build any new fitness in that time — mainly want to recover properly from Berlin, maintain as much of my current base as possible, and arrive at NYC healthy.
For anyone who has raced marathons this close together, how did you structure the five weeks in between? How much time did you take completely off, when did you start running again, and when did you bring back longer runs or workouts?

Are there any good online plans or general guidelines specifically for recovering between two marathons 4–6 weeks apart?
For context, I was running about 5 days per week and peaked around the mid-40s miles per week during my Berlin build.

Winter running gear recommendations for someone trying to avoid the treadmill?

I know I’m thinking pretty far ahead, but I really don’t want to spend another winter doing most of my runs on a treadmill.
For those of you who run outside throughout the winter, what gear would you recommend?

I’m mainly wondering about things like jackets, base layers, tights/pants, gloves, hats, socks, visibility gear, and anything else that makes winter running more manageable.

What should I actually expect from a running coach?

I recently hired a running coach for about $250/month. I’m a few weeks out from Berlin and was pretty open to making changes to my existing training plan. We talked last week and they asked me some questions. I gave them my previous runs since my training started in May. Then they generated a plan for the next 4 weeks.

The main reasons I wanted a coach weren’t necessarily just to have someone write a marathon plan for me. I wanted someone to look at my training and tell me things like: Am I pushing too hard during speed workouts? Am I running too much or not enough? Are my paces appropriate for my current fitness? Is my overall training load reasonable? For context, I peak at around 47 miles per week.

My coach had me download VDOT and put together the next few weeks of training, but so far there hasn’t been much explanation or feedback attached to it. The plan is also pretty similar to what I already had planned. I actually had to mention that this week was supposed to be a deload week before that was incorporated.

I found this coach after seeing them recommended on this subreddit, so I’m not trying to immediately assume they’re doing anything wrong. I’m mostly wondering what people who have worked with coaches think I should reasonably expect, especially at around $250/month.

Should a coach generally be reviewing your workouts, adjusting paces based on how you’re responding, discussing why certain sessions are being prescribed, monitoring fatigue/recovery, etc.? Or is it normal for most of the service to essentially be receiving a customized training plan?

If the main benefit is just having someone generate a schedule, I’m struggling a little to understand the value compared with using a good marathon plan from one of my running clubs and adjusting it myself.

Curious to hear what people who have had good coaching experiences actually got out of it.

Charity asked for £1,000 upfront (half the minimum) after acceptance — is this normal?

Hello,

This is regarding the London Marathon 2027. So I was accepted by a marathon and they asked me to call them. Their page only mentioned a registration fee and fundraising minimum, nothing about a deposit. When I called, they asked for me to pay some of the minimum up front. I offered £200, but they said they actually want £1,000 (half the minimum) to be put on the team. Has anyone run into this before? Curious if it's normal or a red flag.

I confirm this is actually from the team organizations for the charity and not a scam/phishing email. The phone number is the same as the one on their website.

Edit: I reviewed the application form more closely. The written terms state:
£40 non-refundable registration fee.
£2,000 minimum fundraising target.
If the £2,000 target isn’t reached, they may charge a £400 entry fee.

The terms also say the charity “reserves the right to ask a participant to give a donation, their reg. fee or entry fee up front before agreeing their entry into the event.”

However, I cannot find anything in the application or terms that mentions a requirement to pay £1,000 upfront or that the upfront amount would be 50% of the fundraising minimum. That was only mentioned during the phone call.

I’m going to email the charity to ask for clarification in writing about the £1,000 requirement, whether it counts toward the £2,000 fundraising target, and where this policy is disclosed.

Is the Pay Jump Worth the Risk?

Hey everyone, looking for some perspective from fellow paralegals.

I’m currently at a smaller firm where I’ve been for more than 4 years (6 1/2 years total as a paralegal). The people are genuinely great and I have a lot of flexibility, including taking time off on short notice. Job is 4 days in office. However, it feels like a dead end in terms of growth and the nature of some cases makes me uncomfortable.

I have a new offer at a larger firm in IP law. The role pays $100k (up from $85k), has two remote days per week after a 90 day probationary period, and offers real growth potential. The hours are 9 to 6 which is longer than I’m used to and during probation I’d lose scheduling flexibility entirely.

My questions for the community:

Should I hold out for a better offer or is $100k solid for a paralegal in NYC?

Has anyone made a similar jump and regretted or loved it?

Any insight appreciated. Thanks.

[33] 6 Month Transformation: 25 lbs Down and Finally Taking Care of Myself

On NYE, I came home and had one of those ugly moments where I realized I hated who I had slowly become.

Not from one huge mistake. Just years of bad habits, excuses, drinking too much, smoking weed too often, gaining weight, and feeling like I was watching my life happen instead of actually living it.

I had lurked on this subreddit for a year, always looking at other people’s transformations and wondering when I was finally going to stop making excuses.

On NYE, I finally did.

I’m down 25 lbs, barely drink anymore, and quit smoking weed. I started taking running seriously again. I was already a runner before, but this year I decided I wanted to actually get better and faster at it.

I also started putting more effort into my appearance by switching from glasses to contacts and actually learning how to style my hair instead of settling for the same flat bowl-cut look I’d had for way too long.

I’m posting this halfway through the year because I’m not “done.” But I’m proud of where I am, and I know there’s someone lurking like I used to who needs to hear this:

You are not too old to turn it around. You are not too far gone. Start now. Six months from now, you’ll be glad you did.

Flying Etihad Apartment YYZ to AUH. Do equipment swaps happen often?

Hi. I am flying this Sunday and was wondering if equipment swaps are common? Last year I was supposed to fly The Suite on ANA from ORD but they had an equipment swap. A snowstorm had happened so I did understand.

Email just recieved from NYRR. Hopefully this a good thing?

It may not change 9+1 entries but I'm sure the capacity for races won't increase? If non-9+1 slots sell out fast (likely, since they don't require the 9-race commitment), they may create a false sense that a race is "full" before 9+1 spots even open, causing confusion.

It’s great for anybody who doesn’t need the 9+1 and doesn’t have to commit early on sign up day. They can wait closer to race day since I’d assume those won’t fill up so fast.

Email is below:

"As part of our ongoing work to improve race access and participation across our community, New York Road Runners is launching a race entry registration pilot for select July–September 2026 races. This pilot is designed to create more opportunities for runners to participate in NYRR events by designating a small number of entries for non-9+1 or non-4 out of 6 participants with the goal of easing demand.

The pilot will not reduce the number of 9+1 or 4 out of 6 entries available.

All July–September races will remain eligible for +1 volunteer credit.

9+1

As part of this effort, some entries for select races during this period will be offered as “non-9+1” eligible for entry into the 2027 TCS New York City Marathon—while continuing to offer ways to complete the program. This pilot will not reduce the number of 9+1 entries available.

The following races will include non-9+1 entry entries:

  • Percy Sutton Harlem

4 Out of 6

Additionally, some entries will also be designated as “non-4 out of 6” eligible for the 2027 United Airlines NYC Half. This will not reduce the number of 4 out of 6 entries available.

The non-9+1 entries for the following race will also be non-4 out of 6:

At the time of registration, all races will be clearly labeled so that runners know whether an entry is eligible for the relevant guaranteed entry program or part of the pilot. Once a runner selects and pays for an entry, they cannot switch to the other entry type.

July-September races open at 12:00 p.m. ET on May 5 and 7. Read more about the pilot and July-September race launch here.

Thank you,
Your Friends at NYRR
