Best £100 shoe?

Sorry if this kind of things gets asked.

About me :5'11 84kgs currently but fighting weight should be 75 (it's been a long winter)

Fastest half is 1:30

Looking to marathon in a year

Haven't trained consistently for a couple of years but looking to run about 15-20kms a week

Just want one shoe to rule them all without spending too much. Not bothered about big brands or design.

parkrun wristbands - do we approve or do they make you look like you’ve just discharged yourself from hospital?

Genuine question as I like to have something on each wrist for balance, whether or not I’m running. If I’m spending £20 it would be nice if I could wear it at other times other than just Saturday mornings!

15-16 route in East Sussex/Kent area

Hi all,

I'll be in East Sussex/Kent for about ten days and wondered if anyone has some decent route(s) for 15-16 miles? I live in east Scotland so quite unfamiliar with the terrain down there, and don't want to get run over by a speeding Audi.

I'm thinking Tunbridge Wells - East Grinstead - Uckfield - High Weald - Maidstone areas.

Any links to routes / gpx files etc. would be wonderful.

Bad idea to do my first marathon on trails?

Looking to do my first marathon in the autumn. It seems all the road marathons are up north or Scotland and always on Sundays. The issue being I live miles away from these and will have to be back to work on the Monday (no more annual leave).

The thought of having to drive 5+ hours home after it sounds miserable to me so i’ve pretty much ruled them out.

There is a local trail marathon to me in October and I was thinking of doing it, but not sure if it is a stupid idea.

I have done a little bit of trail running and really enjoyed it but 98% of my running has been on the roads. If I was to commit to doing it then I would make sure I do most of my long runs on trails in the block.

So what do people think, stupid idea or achievable?

Valencia marathon….opinions on likely availability?

After missing a sub 3 by some seconds at London (gah), am very keen to do Valencia. As a 40+ year old woman, hoping to make the most of these few years before Father Time catches me hahah

You can’t join a waiting list now for Valencia (boo). So I am a bit unsure if I’ll be able to get a number. Any thoughts? Leads would be mega appreciated

Vest sizing

I got the rab veil 6, was right between M or L.... 40" chest....

I've never had a running vest before so finding it hard to tell if the fit is OK?

The bottles are almost at an angle rather than sitting vertically...is that an indicator?

Are the strings meant to contact the skin or sit loose of them? Should the 2 sides be closer to meeting in the middle?

Evo SLs

Picked up these Japan exclusive SLs on a recent trip to Tokyo. 80 quid because of the exchange rate at the moment! Not sure I want to destroy these ones though!

Mouth protection whilst trail running

What do you guys use as a mouth protector from flies?

I'm bored of running and the next second it feels like I've been hit by a sick stick as a fly dives down my throat and the result is instant retching and watery eyes.

I get a blocked nose when I run so am quite a mouth breather I'm sorry to say.

Is there anything I can use that stops the flies but still allows airflow?

finally gave in and bought a pair of On Clouds, are they actually worth the hype?

Been running consistently for a few months now and wanted a pair that could handle daily runs with recovery walks without killing my knees.

Ended up picking these up after way too much overthinking and first impression: insanely comfortable. The cushioning feels soft without being too squishy, and they somehow still feel pretty responsive.

Haven’t put enough kms on them to judge durability yet, but curious what this sub thinks are On shoes genuinely good long-term trainers or is this just the honeymoon phase talking? 😭

Picked them up through Culture Circle after comparing a few options online, but mostly just hoping I finally stop blaming my shoes for slow runs now.

How much faster do you go on race day?

Hi, did my first ever half marathon at the weekend and a bit disappointed with my time. Training went kinda badly with a few spells of injuries/illness and I was really sick a few days before the race so I didn’t have high expectations and wasn’t in the best condition so took it easy and just had fun but can’t help feel a bit disappointed as I’d still done quite a lot of work for a very slow time.

One thing I have questions about is “race pace” in general though. Used Runna for a training plan and practically all my long runs were done at a conversational pace with occasionally small sections at a faster pace. How do you go from training like this to then running at a faster pace for so long? And how much faster than conversational do you tend to race at? I want to do another half marathon in the future because I’ve definitely learnt a lot from this process and hopefully can have better luck in the week of the race which should improve my time a bit but I don’t really understand how to go from running 18k conversationally in training to on the day going at a tough pace for so long?

First Marathon - Achievable?

I’ve just completed my first half marathon in a time of 2:15.

Like many runners a marathon is a dream goal to tick off, just the one (I’m sure you’ve heard that before, but seriously) to know that I’ve achieved that. I have been thinking about it and considering it for a while and the half was a stepping stone to that, although I’d love to do more of these in the future as my main race (after completing a marathon).

I am looking at potentially signing up for the Yorkshire marathon in mid October. Whilst the goal is obviously just to finish, a secondary goal would be under 5 hours. I’m contemplating using a run walk plan (this will be new to me), and I’ve done the calculations and based on the recommended paces this should be achievable although very aware things can go differently on the day.

One of the reasons I’m considering October is because I play football recreationally, games and training weekly. This was OK to manage with my half training, but would not be feasible with a marathon.

I was thinking that a marathon in October would allow me to completely focus on the marathon plan, as well as gym strength sessions (didn’t do these for the half), because the football season will not be on during the training period.

In the half I completed my cardio was completely fine throughout and I felt very comfortable in that way so I know I have a good base to build on there.
During the race the discomfort I felt was my knee and groin, which hadn’t given me trouble in training strangely. My pace and cadence held up throughout though. I felt OK the next day, a little stiff but no issues with stairs etc. I guess my question is - is June to October enough time to up to this distance, particularly my musculoskeletal system? I’m hoping the gym strength sessions will help in this regard.

Whilst this is ‘convenient’ for me I don’t want to sign up if this is a totally unachievable goal or puts me at a heightened risk of injury.

I’m a 41 year old female (if that matters).

TLDR; Half marathon this weekend 2:15, cardio held up very well but some knee and groin pain. Felt mostly ok the day after. Is June to October enough time to train (using a run walk plan) to a) finish a marathon b) finish under 5 hours, will be adding strength sessions in which I didn’t do for the half.

Thanks as always!

£5,500 to Charity Run for London 2027?!

Project Purple is offering spots for £5,500 raised. How? Last year the highest Id seen was for £2,000.

Absolute madness for how high charities minimums have gotten. I cant even fathom how people can pay this much even if they can give the money upfront.

I guess this has much to do with how popular running and Major Marathoj running has gotten in general. Absolutely wild.

Lambeth/ South London half...?

I did the Hackney half on Sunday and loved it. I absolutely love how the whole borough radiated positive vibes, especially when the sun was shining during the event. Do you think it would ever be possible for a road-closed, large scale half marathon to happen in South London? I have tried to map out a dream route but haven't managed to find one yet that could work, I guess with so many major roads in the area. I was thinking of the village/ start and end being in Brixton (Brockwell Park), with routes possibly going via Dulwich, Peckham... maybe Clapham way? There are lots of parks and commons, just maybe too many A roads and hills (not that hills would deter too many). What do you think? Has anyone managed to plot out a potential route that would work for this?

Weston Super-Mare half Marathon

Hi there,

Question about the Weston Super-Mare half marathon. How much running on the beach is there going to be?

I’ve only ever run half marathon distances on roads and I’m worried that a lot of running on sand might be a bit of a killer!

Any other information or tips about that event gratefully received.

Will rubbing improve on shoes?

Currently on w9 of C25k, was running in old hoka clifton 9s and treated myself a couple of weeks ago to brooks glycerin max. Now on the inside of my feet at the widest part they're rubbing and the skin has blistered, it doesn't really hurt apart from after runs as the shoes keep aggravating it. I run in more miles socks, is there anyway to stop the rubbing or are my shoes just not wide enough? I may have to admit defeat and get more hokas as I know they're wide enough but I really enjoy running in the brooks other than the bloody blisters 🙃

Alpha Fly 3 sizing

The first two pics are my true size 10.5. Pictures 3, 4, 5, and 6 are 10.5 on the left foot and 11 on the right. I don’t have standard thumb space in the toe box for my TTS 10.5, but they fit snug. I’m just worried if I run a marathon that they will hurt after a while, so I was thinking about going half size up, which is size 11, but the size 11 has too much space for me. If you look carefully at pic 3, you can actually see all the space that’s left in the shoe. I wanted to know from someone that has experience in the shoe, should I go for the 11 even though it leaves a lot of space or just go through the size?

Bognor Prom 10k today - lots of disqualified runners

Edit: this question is about 2024 results, not today's...

I didn't even enter this but it's a very flat seaside course so was interested in the results.

https://www.racetecresults.com/results.aspx?CId=61&RId=588&EId=1&dt=0&PageNo=25

In 2024 it looks like 250 runners were disqualified (out of 1500 finishers) but they all have times so they're not DNF.

Does anyone know what might have happened?

(I assume that's not a normal number of DQs)

I couldn’t find a free mobile friendly route planning app - so I made a free one - I would love your feedback

It’s free to use, I will add a couple of adverts in just to cover the cost of running it, but it would be great to get your feedback on it, if it needs tweaking!
(Edit: like the fool I am I forgot to put the website in for anyone to check)
