The one move I want to see happen
I'd love to see the Kraken acquire Marchenko. Maybe with the Kraken and Wright motivated to find a new home they can work something out with CBJ
Worried for Future
I've been hella anxious for our future, especially with the news of Wright (tho I saw that coming a mile away). This fear is brought about by the fact of the big glaring issue the NHL refuses to acknowledge, and the fact Washington just passed a harsh tax on millionaires (there's others as well but these are the big points) we are going to continue to see players reject to come here because we are officially the worst state to play a major league sport in because of the tax. On top of that half the fans are just in the camp of "oh I'm just happy we have a team." And the other half say "we have no identity" Sports teams need to be competitive, I'm not so worried about like the next 5 years (ik were going to continue to not be a great team) its more so the long term. I hate to both get invested in a team and see it leave in the next 15-20 yrs cuz no one wants to be here. Granted I am just a stressed transfer fan, but I see shit like this rn going on with the kraken and I only see an expos or an A's situation happening from here on.
I'm not looking for a fix or an immediate impact or answer just looking to see if there are other in the same boat or anyone with a counterpoint to all of this cuz "erm actually ur dumb for this reason..." Etc.
I love this team, I've been invested sense the start when I was still in Chicago. I care a lot about this team. And ik a lot of y'all do too.
[Daugherty] I’ve been told NHL teams received correspondence recently that the “one 19 year old in the AHL” rules is official now. It was an MOU before, but now it’s set in stone.
Offer Sheets. Kraken?
I've always been fuzzy on this.
Leo Carlsson just signed a offer sheet from the Flyers for $18 mill aav. Anaheim can match or they get 4 first round picks as compensation.
I've seen offer sheets suggested as a move the Kraken could make. But...4 first round picks?? That's insane. Carlsson is good...but 4 firsts?
This would be an insane option for us then, correct?
So no Bedard. He'd be up there in the $18 mill aav/4 pick range.
This is insane. No way they don't take 4 picks....right?
Definitely not our path to success. I don't understand all the rules but it seems like they're insane gambles.
How are we feeling with all the moves by the Kraken during the off season? Trades, letting guys go, the draft? This is my first off season with the team.
reddit.comHow are you guys feeling about Mason Marchment going to San Jose?
So I know this isn't the Sharks sub, but they're kinda my second Pacific team, and with all the negativity he brought us during his stay I wanna see how we feel about this.
Thing is, if any other Pacific team were to succeed, I'd want it to be the Sharks, and because of how good the locker room vibe has been over there, I don't want him ruining that for them.
So, any thoughts?
Mail Call!
Nothing like a box of goodies straight from the Emerald City! (Already had Buoy, but needed something to put the beanie on)
Very impressed with the shipping too, 4 days from the US to Australia!
The Vancouver Canucks have signed Jamie Oleksiak to a 2 year contract with a $5 million AAV
Skating Speed
I've been thinking about the direction that GM JB wants to bring the organization, in particular on the forward units, and how much draft capital we invested in the Mackie Samoskevich. I think we're going to see a slightly faster team next year with McMann and Samoskevich eating up minutes, particularly considering upgrades in speed burst.
If we compare the Kraken overall to other teams using the Edge DB one NHL.com, it's pretty clear the Kraken have been lacking in foot speed. With Eberle, Kakko, and Tolvanen on the right side, last year we may have fielded one of the slowest top three RW bunch in the league. If you look at the Kraken's 20-22 mph bursts, we're consistently about half or even less than half of the top contenders in that category. This helps defenses take more risks, and pack in our D zone without feeling threatened by a breakout. This was a massive issue last year for the team keeping defenses honest and not tilting ice time as much.
Consider the comparisons of Mackie Samoskevich versus Eeli Tolvanen for RW comparisons, and Bobby McMann versus Jared McCann for LW comparisons. The speed upgrades in the 20-22 mph burst categories are approximately 4x-7x greater for Mackie and Bobby, respectively. I'm anticipating that these speed upgrades on both wings, will make the Kraken marginally (tempering expectations here) more competitive in preventing D from pinching up into the zone. Not to mention more minutes for Winterton and Catton, who also have the potential to rank high in this category next year.
When Matty Beniers first came to the Kraken at the end of the first season, wasn't he scoring almost every game?
I wonder if that's because the Kraken knew they weren't going to make it to the playoffs so he felt no pressure and was just relaxed doing his thing, but after that the pressure got to him? Did the coaching staff tell him to just go out and do what he felt like doing? I'm sure know one knows the answers to these questions but it's just been eating at me.
Are we playing him "wrong"? Would he be better off playing in a different style or a different position? Was he playing center in those last few games of the first season or was he a winger?
Also, I've been watching him much more closely than the other players and I've definitely notice him trying new techniques. While he might not be a star yet, I can see he isn't just doing the same old stuff. He is learning.
Edit: I was mistaken about the goals. He had 9 points (3 goals, 6 assists) across 10 games in 21-22
Kraken sign Curtis Douglas to a two year $1.25 million deal
Qualifying offers made for Melanson, Samoskevich, Ostman, & Ottavainen
the Kraken moment that made you realize this team actually has an identity now
It takes a while for an expansion team to feel like it has its own personality instead of just being the new team in town. There was a specific moment for me where it clicked. Has that happened for you yet and what was it.

[Kraken] Kraken sign Mackie Samoskevich $3.85M x 3 years
Where is Jake O’Brien going to play next year?
I was just wondering this. With him having just had a huge OHL year, he’s probably maxed out at the junior level. Would be nice if he jumped to NCAA, but it seems like the options are 1) back to the OHL where he might learn bad habits and have a little slower development (due to the lack of a real learning curve for him) or 2) the AHL or 3) going into camp trying to win a job with the Kraken.
What does everyone else think? Seems like he’s a long way away from #3 so #2 seems like the right choice.
