What skis to pack for 4 year old first timer?

Hi All,
I am a snowboarder Dad but have a range of skis to pick from for my 4 year old boys first time up on the mountains in Queenstown this winter. I’ve checked with chat GPT but just looking for some actual opinions. It is his first time skiing, we have 3x days booked into Skiwiland (ski school) where they provide all the gear but this is for the other days if he wants to ride (I only expect around magic carpets).

He is currently approx 105cm tall, 17-18kgs 4.5 years old.

We have the following skis

  1. Head Supershape 77cm (the small ones in the picture come to about nipple height)
  2. Head Supershape 97cm
  3. Head Souphead 68 97cm

Pretty sure the answer is the smaller skis but not sure if they are too small?

115W pivots on 112 ski

Just got my Pivots in the mail: 115W brakes for a 112 width ski (Rustler 11 in 180)

I talked to the shop before buying them and they said if it looked like too much gap, I could swap them for the 105W brakes instead.

What do you guys think of the fitment?

Show me you Zipfits

There seems to be a number of us that have Zipfits. Different models, different alterations, different colorways. Newer models, older models, etc…

1st two pictures are of the current Gara model I have now. Not 100% on the actual model they are as they are a Le Boot Lab special edition. They came to me without lace loops so I had a local person to me in PA add some loops and I went a little excessive with a sharpie.

Just recently(within the week) purchased the older model Freeride ones that should be getting shipped to me by end of next week(seller coming back from Europe this week). These are 27.5 so will fit a little more snug than my 28.5 which have a little bunching at some points not to mention the fluted cuffs will be a whole lot better!!!

Volkl peregrine 72 master

Has anyone skiid it, struggle to find many reviews/information about it online. Been recommended the 72/76, but only 72 master available. if anyone has skiid it, please help out :)

Im 6 foot (184cm) and 70kg, and only 178cm available, which makes life that little bit harder. I’m looking for a piste ski (nothing excessively stiff) which is good for carving, short turns and teaching as a ski instructor. thanks

Talk me out of my ski choice

As the subject suggests, talk me out of my ski choice - I’m thinking about pulling the trigger on a pair of Head Shape e-V8’s with PR 13 bindings. 170cm length. It’s my first pair of skis in about 20 years… ski team (GS mainly / some Super G) in high school, but skied rarely until last year.. I’m 45 now, 260 pounds, and happy to ski from opening to about 1pm. Groomers pretty much exclusively. Might venture into trees at some point, but no bumps or freestyle parks in my future.

Last year I was renting mostly 160 length skis - local mountain carried rossignol experiences. They were fun and light… and unstable / too bendy, but while I’m working on getting back in shape, the light weight helped max my runs before I was gassed embarrassingly too soon the day.

Everything online screams I need to get as long of a ski as I can get given my weight. In this case, the V8 goes up to 177. Do I really need the extra length (and ski weight), or can I save the weight and still have fun with the 170 length, convincing myself I’m letting it rip like I did in high school but actually skiing like a weekend warrior jerry (sigh)?

Oh, and feel free to comment on the bindings (PR 13’s). I’d like to keep the knees out of the operating room, so from what I’ve read these are great for injury prevention and with a din setting of around 9, I’m right on the line between ideal for PR11 or 13 (thus the 13 choice), but happy to hear any thoughts on those or similar.

Thanks for any input / thoughts!

Anyone here found a prescription setup that actually feels good all day?

Trying to sort out my setup before the season. Glasses under goggles always end up uncomfortable for me after a few hours, and contacts get really dry once it is cold and windy.

I have been looking at prescription inserts too, but a lot of the ones people mention seem based on pretty old designs. Curious what people here are actually using now and what has held up best in real use.

Looking for "pencil shaft" / non-tapered ski poles

Hey ya'll! I'm doing a bit of research on cheap and / or vintage "pencil shaft" ski poles, but I can't find much info. I'm looking for poles that no one will miss to make into bike polo mallets for my club.

So far I know that Goode exclusively makes them, and there are a couple Exel poles that lack taper, like the Exel Nova.

Can anyone name some more brands or models off the top of their heads? Alternatively is there a wiki somewhere for this sorta of thing? It'd be nice to have a list of names to look out for at the local goodwill or on eBay.

Thanks for reading!

Gear Recommendations Boots & Binding

dear Reddit-Hive Mind,

8 years ago, I broke by beloved Armada JJ and thought with Climate Change and so on … it is not worth it to get new gear (also broke my poles, lost my helmet …) and stated with XC Skiing.

however, there seems to be some snow left and I moved to Switzerland. Biggest sign by some deity, I won with some luck a pair of brand new Armadas zero 180 / 133mm under the binding. So the idea is to make a comeback and I saw that pin bindings are now available by different brands.

so I wanted to ask you, can you recommend me some bindings and fitting shoes maybe. I know the skis are a bit big and heavy for touring but it will be fine I guess (still prob. lighter than my past JJs with the Marker Duke). Also maybe some polls?

your help is much appreciated!

Bootfitted, is this ok/normal?

My K2 Recon 130 Boa skiboots. Bought them earlier this year. Returned to shop for boot fitting after first ski-trip as there were some uncomfortable pressure points. They did something with clamps. Picked them up recently and did a test run on an indoor slope today (I accidently bought some new skis on sale when I picked them up, love my new Kästle MX75's). After an hour of skiing I noticed that the hinge on the inner side of the left boot looked weird. Very much pushed out and not flush anymore. Did not do anything out of the ordinary with them and did not fall.

Is this normal / common after boot fitting or should I be concerned about this?

Last photo is of right boot for comparison.

Skis recommendation

Hi, I'm looking for skis recommendation for my father as a gift for his 60th birthday. He is a pro skier, classical style with phantom move when carving. I'm looking for skis mostly for on piste but it would be good if the skis could handle some occasional off-piste slopes too. Thanks!

Topsheet repair, trash or treasure?

I got this free pair of skis off Facebook. I’m still pretty new to skiing and I’ve never really done ski repair before, so im looking for some advice. The topsheets are pretty rough, but the bases actually look solid (no core shots). My idea was to remove or sand down the remaining topsheet, seal and repaint them, then hit everything with a bunch of clear coat and get some more life out of them. Am I completely dreaming thinking this could work, or is it worth trying? Worst case they become wall skis, but I feel like it could be a fun project either way.

First time Skier: Looking for quality recommendations for jacket, pants, gear etc. !!

I live in Asia (16F) where there are NO physical stores that sell any ski gear (Closest is Japan/China and I just pray for good outlets) but I am open to ordering online and paying shipping. I have not planned specifically where to ski but it would most likely be in countries like Sweden, Switzerland etc. my ski trip would be 2027 winter most likely.

As of now, my focus is mainly on searching for pants with a budget of $100-$200; maybe higher if the quality is truly worth the investment. My requirements are for a baggier feel/look that's waterproof! I'm really looking for something to invest in as I'm not getting any taller and "upgrading" isn't really a consideration because $60USD is already so much money (+ shipping) converted to my currency. (If anyone recommends a European brand, I wouldn't have to pay shipping) - I am also travelling to Paris this winter.

I am still looking for recommendations for jacket (preferably a shell) / mittens / helmet / goggles. I'll rent boots and skis and purchase my own when I am better experienced so I will appreciate any advice/recommendations for it.

Side note: Please don't just recommend renting. I am slowly going to buy gear as I go but I was just offered as a birthday gift to get a pair of ski pants this year and I'll be able to get a jacket of choice as a gift next year, months before winter! (: I have actually been skiing before and I'm going for lessons soon.

Searching for my unicorn skis

Do you know where I could find a *new, unmounted pair* of Atomic Backland 98W or Backland 100 in 164cm?

They are my all-time favorite touring ski and I meant to buy a backup pair before they were discontinued (in 2024 or so?), but I didn't. I am in Seattle, but hoping to spread my search countrywide!

-I am not looking for the new, redesigned Backland 101s. Not the old or new 107s or 109s or 102s or 95s or any other Atomic ski. (However, men's 100 @ 164cm and the women's 98W @ 164cm were, I believe, identical. So either works.)

-I am only looking for new and unmounted. I have scored a pair of once-mounted 98Ws as a backup, but prefer new. Yes, I've searched online, to no avail. I'm hoping that someone here works in an indie shop with a shrinkwrapped pair in a dusty corner! I can clear them out for ya!

I know that once my current pair kicks the bucket I could find a new pair to love, but they've been my ride or die for like 5 years and I just love 'em. Light enough for volcanoes and multidays, but so fun to ski. Photo of the ski rack at Mount Adams last weekend...they're a popular ski in our crew!

Skis are expensive to date

I've heard the saying "date your skis, marry your boots" many times. In a newish skier (beginner to intermediate). Most of the skis I'm seeing are around the $700-$900 range. I can't imagine "dating" a $700 item. That's about the same price as boots. How are y'all saying date your skis when they cost as much as the boots? Or does that saying mean I should always rent skis?

EDIT: Thanks for all the input. Summary is that I should buy used. Another way to go is to demo a few skis on the mountain till I find ones I like and then buy them. I'm pretty new to this so I want skis that aren't expensive but good enough for me to learn. Once I'm better and can actually tell the difference I'll go the demo route.

What 3 Layer should i choose for skiing/snowboarding? Advise needed.

Hi everyone.

I need something versatile to use not only for skiing, but also for hiking and trekking, or even as streetwear. The thing is, I'm looking for a third-layer jacket, and the more jackets I look at, the harder it is to decide. I'm looking for a waterproof and breathable third layer, but I have a major dilemma regarding the type of membrane and versatility.

On one hand, I'm looking for something that guarantees total waterproofness for those tough days of blizzards or wet snow, but at the same time breathes well when the activity intensifies or during demanding approach sections. I've seen some very robust, ski-specific options (with Gore-Tex Pro or similar), but the prices are a bit scary, and I'm afraid they might be too rigid or heavy.

On the other hand, I have several 3-layer (3L) jackets on my radar that were initially designed for trekking/mountaineering (specifically the Haglöfs Front Proof II). Aesthetically I like it, it's lightweight, and the price is usually a bit more contained. My question is, does anyone use or has anyone used a 3L trekking jacket for skiing?

Let's see if you can recommend some jackets.

Thanks"

Blizzard Black Pearl 88 vs Nordica Santa Ana 92

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on which skis and ski length to buy and I’m torn between two models: Blizzard Black Pearl 88 and Nordica Santa Ana 92.

A bit about me:
- 29F
- 155 cm tall, 50 kg
- Intermediate/advanced skier, have been skiing regularly since I was 5 years old
- Ski mainly in Norway and the Alps
- Mostly piste skiing, with occasional off-piste

I haven’t bought new skis in years and have been skiing on an old twin-tip pair for the last few seasons, so I’m definitely long overdue for a proper all-mountain setup.

I currently have two skis I’m considering:

Blizzard Black Pearl 88
Available in 146 cm (currently on sale) or 152 cm

Nordica Santa Ana 92
Available in 150 cm or 155 cm

Which skis do you think would suit me best?

Also, any ski boot recommendations would be appreciated as I’m upgrading everything at once.

Thank you!
