r/SmashingPumpkins

The first time I heard Edin, my heart started racing. The rawk was finally back.

Pentagrams sounds and feels like being swept up in the casting of a pagan spell.
It is hypnotic and ritualistic, the song feels like an experience rather than just a badass track. Pay as you go… f yeah man.

On this tour, these two songs deliver an incredible 1/2 punch back-to-back and stand out as one of the highlights of the second set.

Edin & Pentagrams belong in the Smashing Pumpkins pantheon. Both are all-time classics. Change my mind :)

I was at the rats in a cage tour last night in Montreal and I think it’s insane that they dropped Stand inside your love from the setlist. I think it’s easily their best song and considering the spotlight they gave James got soloing and the sound quality it would have been perfect. I don’t understand why instead they played stuff like machina machina or sojourner which literally no one gives a shit about. Starting the second set with songs that weren’t from the classic era ruined the vibe since it was pretty much just earrape wall of sound for the first 20 mins after the break. They could have easily just played Luna or soma or rocket or perfect but they have Billy wanting to spend 15 mins playing shit like Edin and pentagrams to 0 crowd engagement. Overall for me, the show was great but had potential to be soo much better with a better setlist especially considering they played 3 hrs and had no opener. The Mellon collie set was fine since it was just that album but the rest should’ve been strictly greatest hits, people spent the money to see those songs. Even opening the whole concert with 1979 and bullet is crazy, why not save it for the end of set 1? And songs like fuck you/an ode to no one and jelly belly or bodies were just terrible to hear live, made me want to plug my ears and wait for disarm

Hi everyone, i wanted to know your opinions.

Do you think that if billy had never lost his hair, the band would have stayed in that 1991-1994 style? I only ask because i feel that mellon collie was the beginning of his kind of “Nosferatu” look that he adopted for a while after, same with the zero character.
EDIT - What i mean is that the shaved head reveal was a pivotal point that introduced the new style, musically aswell. So without the shaved head, what would the big reveal have been instead or would they have stayed with the whole lsd style?

He flubbed this so badly, I feel like I have to take my own shot at it to see the potential that was. I took some of the original slots but instead of Ava Adore why not Pug?

Instead of Everlasting Gaze why not Wound?

This set would bring the house down every night.

Zodeon at Crystal Hall CD: Is it in a jewel case? One for sale on Discogs, in a jewel case, which makes me wonder whether it's legit. Thanks for any insight!

My dad saw the Pumpkins at Purdue University in Indiana on April 18th, 2000. I found a recording of the concert, audio only.
He’s told me MANY times that he has a distinct memory of Chamberlin leaving his kit and playing guitar with Billy and James for “1979”. Only problem is, I can’t find a single piece of evidence for Jimmy doing this anywhere.
The drums in the recording sound clean and sharp enough to be a drum machine passing for real drums, so it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s not really him. There’s a different introduction to the song too, so it makes me wonder that introduction was possible because there was a third guitarist, allowing James or Billy to play something different.

The linked Archive.org article is the recording of the concert. 1979 is the second to last song.

Can anybody help me confirm/deny my dad’s claims? He’s very very very sure that this happened and said that he can still vividly picture Jimmy walking out from behind his kit and joining James and Billy.

Going to see them in a few weeks and disappointed to see the same setlist every night. Probably bailing after Cherub Rock and beat traffic.

Zuzu's had recent posts about Machina reissue on CD and Live in Europe 1992 on CD saying "coming 10/10" but I haven't seen anything about what time they'll be available for order. Anybody know? It's the day before...
