r/SouthDakota

I’ve traveled extensively across the State and noticed an amazing number of old vehicles in shelter belts, fields, yards etc. what are your plans for all these vehicles?

Do you plan on just letting them rust away your kids having to deal with them? Why?

Would you ever sell them or give them to someone wanting to restore them or for art?

For those of you in central South Dakota, why do you stay?

I moved to central South Dakota from Montana about a year ago for a job and the chance to move out of my parent’s basement. Fast forward to current day and I’ve been all over the state, riding my bike and fishing one weekend at a time. I am tired of having to drive 2.5-3 hours in any direction just to find a decent mountain bike trail system or fish for trout out of a stream. Tent camping locally is hard because there doesn’t seem to be any places where I can set up camp away from the wind and the afternoon thunderstorms can come out of no where. Between the weather this past couple of weeks and not having anyone to share my hobbies with I am going insane. I guess this was kind of a rant but I think I am looking for reasons to stay? What makes this desolate wind scoured section of state worth living in for the rest of you?

Trump Approves Toxic Cancer-Linked Forever Chemical Pesticides On Major Food Crops Never Before Used In America

Are cancer rates in SD about to skyrocket? I live around Aberdeen. I'm not well versed on our agricultural activity, but I see an awful lot of soybean and corn fields around my area.

Meth we are on it. Or out to stop it

I recently have come back to South Dakota and an old friend has had it pretty rough since I saw her last. At first and as most people would probably think is why she wasn’t aging as gracefully as some. I ended up getting to know a little more about what had happened to her over the last 25 years. She had an incredibly difficult life. Well don’t do drugs. Right. It turns out what happened to her happens to quite a few people. Any given day there are over a 1000 women in jail for drugs. It costs about $50,000 to house them. Each. But we must be getting a lot of drugs off of the street though right. No most don’t even have any drugs or $25 worth. They have it in them. As in currently under the effects of it. Thats all. The majority of them are no threat to society. They traditionally dont sell them or transport them. Well it must be for some reason right. We just built an $80 million dollar prison to house more women in rapid. So we dont. Need to be afraid of them and they aren’t causing the drug problem we must be doing something to help them right? Nope zero education. We take them from the lives they have. If they had kids they now owe back child support so we take away their license and there stuff and they have to start all over if they don’t have somebody to do everything for the. They cannot find places to rent. They can’t get assistance. So we must rehabilitate them. No. 90% come back. So now what do we do. In rapid the new facility allows us to put babies in jail.

Hey get of drugs or the state will ruin your life. Most girls get drugs from guys. They don’t even look for it or try to go buy it when they are young. Well now they only have other drug users to be there friends and support. Wow. We just pushed them into a life of drugs and they don’t have anything left after this justice system does such a great job here.

Im pissed I am having to pay for this. They one average $20 we omg and we make it so they can’t hardly ever succeed. We are getting robbed and causing massive harm. I feel the state justice system is the criminal act here. Am I wrong?

Packing for South Dakota

I’m used to packing for all possible weather - have had an Upper Peninsula trip in August vary from mid 30’s at night to almost 100 in just 6 days 😂. But we are going to IL, MO, NE, a southern tip of SD, upper Mississippi River valley, and IA for the next couple weeks. Will I be over packing if I toss a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt in the bottom of my bag? I do take a light sweater for restaurants, and will have a light rain coat too.

How to deal with feelings about The Outpost Lodge?

Sorry for the long post… I’m on mobile and it’s making formatting interesting for me today. For those who don’t know, north of Pierre on Cow Creek Rd, near Spring Creek, lies The Outpost Lodge. Their restaurant is pretty good, like you won’t leave hungry and it’s homemade kind of food. It’s decent food. The cabins are cozy and most of the staff are wonderful. It’s part of the charm and reputation of the Lodge, but things have changed since the new owner took over.

The staff turn over rate is fairly high now. The new(er) owner, B, normally seems to be doing his best…I know former employees (including myself) who were treated differently when guests were around then when alone with certain staff and when they left never got their final checks (mine currently delayed by a month). A former cook heard B and the kitchen manager, J, making inappropriate comments about former female employees, current female employees and even B’s wife. (Who seems to have no idea how they talk about her while she works at the hospital to provide for their family while The Lodge is in “tight months”).

There are claims and complaints filed (currently 9 complaints on record)with the Department of Labor, but he seems to be ignoring it all. They have a maintenance list at the Lodge that’s detailed and lengthy. Some things should be a higher priority, but the list seems to be worked on based on what guests can see or would likely complain about. For example, I heard a kitchen staff member talk to B and J about the walk-in needing cleaned as it’s growing some mold, not once but 3 times over separate trips to the restaurant.

The part I’m struggling with is the fact that there’s still good people working there who are likely being told not to do things that are necessary or to do things in an unsafe manner. Like with the mold, if she needs the income, she might not report it. It used to be a great place and there’s a chance it could be again, but this isn’t how SD small businesses should be working. I genuinely have no idea what the next steps should look like. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I saw these beautiful dancers at Rushmore on June 20, 2026. It was an amazing experience.

I believe they are called “Bell Family Dancers”. Does anyone know this group? I would like to look into them more.

Mitchell apartment recommendations

I'm moving to Mitchell for a job soon and am in the process of looking for an apartment. I'm not familiar with Mitchell as a town, so I dont knownif any areas are more unsafe than others. The apartment doesn't need to be that big, I'm single and will be living alone. Ideally, I would like something that is in a safe area with decent amenities that isn't too expensive. Any recommendations or warnings are appreciated.

Was a SD storm's wind gust among the strongest in US history?

Yes.

Winds in excess of 130 mph hit north-central South Dakota early Monday, breaking records and causing significant damage.

The National Weather Service Aberdeen office reported a 131 mph wind gust in Highmore in Hyde County. Photos posted by multiple media outlets show numerous trees uprooted, roofs ripped off buildings, grain silos folded in and downed wind turbines.

The NWS had issued a severe thunderstorm warning at the time of the storm, and it would be the highest recorded thunderstorm wind gust (not from a tornado or derecho) since 1983. The NWS confirmed the winds did not come from a tornado.

Meanwhile, a tornado was reported 2 miles south of Andover. No injuries were reported.

If the 131 mph gust is verified, it would be the 15th-strongest thunderstorm wind gust ever recorded in the United States and second-highest gust in South Dakota. In 2010, winds of 142 mph were measured in Lantry (Dewey County).

This fact brief responds to claims such as this one.

Rosebud Sioux teen's death leads to federal charges against two men on parole

Prosecutors allege a Sioux Falls man provided the drugs that killed 14-year-old McKenna Wendel while another parolee helped conceal evidence.

A federal grand jury in the Northern District of Iowa indicted 51-year-old Mark Milk of Sioux Falls on five felony counts related to the death of his 14-year-old niece, McKenna Wendel, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, according to reporting by South Dakota Searchlight. In the indictment, Milk is accused of providing the cocaine that killed Wendel on March 14, giving her THC, transporting her across state lines to engage in illegal sexual activity and concealing evidence. Jon Rogness, 38, of Brookings, also was indicted on two felony counts alleging he helped conceal evidence.

Both men were on parole at the time of the alleged crimes, according to the South Dakota Searchlight reporting. Milk had been released in 2024 after then-Gov. Kristi Noem commuted his life sentence for manslaughter, while Rogness was serving parole after a manslaughter conviction. U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa Leif Olson declined to discuss details beyond the charges, saying investigators will "prove at trial" the allegations outlined in the indictment.

Who is Dan Ahlers? Where is the representation if said representation is quiet for the democratic party of South Dakota?

This whole governor election and Dan Ahlers is no where to be found.. I think we need to run better democrats out here to get our vote, this is annoying, where the hell is Dan Ahlers? Are you there for the people Dan Ahlers?

Why would Dan wait until republican nominee is announced to start talking policy, why don't you start speaking policy now what the people need now?

Right now, I'm betting Dans policy is to send more money to foreign war system, classic establishment democrat ..

and that is why they lose

Help finding Kuchen for my family!

Hello everyone!

I am from Kansas and I am looking for Kuchen! My grandma used to make this for the family when I was little and all through my dad’s childhood. My dad is from Leola SD. Unfortunately, my grandma has passed, and I am unsure of how to make Kuchen. I love to bake and that’s on my list this winter but I just was able to get my hands on my grandma’s recipe and it looks complicated lol

I will be traveling to Fort Pierre, South Dakota in July. And I was wondering if there was any place around Fort Pierre or on the way to Fort Pierce that would by chance sell Kuchen. We would make a detour if it wasn’t super far from Fort Pierre or our already very long drive. Some towns that we might be going through are Mission, Murdo, Vivian.

Thank you for your help!
