Is Stamford doing alright economically?

Big open-ended question, but genuinely curious. I'm moving to Stamford soon and new to this subreddit. Perhaps it's cognitive bias, but I've been noticing a lot of closure postings here: restaurants (Crab Shack Shell), Town Center Barnes & Noble closing this summer, and others.

Is this opening up space for new opportunities? Are economic policies or pressures pushing long-standing business out? Are folks seeing particular types of businesses popping up more often now than before?

Any insights from those who've seen Stamford evolve? Or where you think it's heading?

Thanks!

Edit: Corrected the name to Crab Shell

Beware Aquarion Visits

So we received a notice from Aquarion that they need to replace the water meter. Bet a lot of you got the same notice.

Dude arrives at 8am, right on schedule. Show him to the meter.

Three minutes later, the sudden sound of rushing water like a fire main. Dude has sheered the main line and it cannot be shut off. He has no idea how to fix it or what to do.

For fifteen minutes - literally, fifteen minutes - I'm running around dropping towels while he waves a pipe wrench around fruitlessly, while also calling backup desperately. I ask can he shut it off at the street; he has no idea where that is.

Finally - again, 15 full minutes later - another dude arrives. That's the second dude you see in the video. Fiddles around for two minutes, seals it off.

By then Ive got two inches of water in my living room. It's over my shoes, soaking everything I own. My landlord arrives with an insurance adjuster, basically the whole damn first floor needs to be ripped out. Weeks of work.

Meanwhile I suddenly have no place to live, all my shit is destroyed, Aquarion is talking about replacing my lovely 3br home experience with a 3 week stay at La Quinta, and by the way this is all happening on a brutal work day. Like anybody needs this shit.

Moral of the story: be prepared with some plumbers epoxy putty, some wooden dowels, a backup plumber, or some other plan in place if these dumb bastards come to your house.

Because they will literally tear your house apart and walk away before 9am like it's nothing.

Stamford students have to pay for lunch again. They shouldn't have to

Little bit of a rant, but the Board of Ed last night passed their $350 million budget last night which included the end of the free-meals-for-all program. After the pandemic, lunches were supplemented to SPS students via the Community Eligibility Provision, which connected the district to the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.

This move to end free-meals-for-all ultimately saved the district $1 million while pushing this costs onto families who don't meet the free or reduced lunch requirements, which is 46.3% of all students (7,105), according to data from CT Edsight. This would mean an additional $140 per student not eligible for free-reduced lunch for the 2026-27 academic year.

Please believe me when I say having lunch be free matters. The requirements for free-reduced lunch specifically cater to low-income children who are basically on the brink, failing to account for middle class families who, on paper, look like they're doing well, but are actually balancing on tightropes.

As someone who attended SPS and graduated during the free-lunch era, having to not worry about if I had debt on my lunch account made my school experience miles better than when I was in the fifth grade. I want you to imagine what it's like to be told every day that I had lunch debt because my parents couldn't afford to put anything on my account that month, and having my classmates hear that.

They should've just taken the $1 million on the chin, or at least found somewhere else to cut. This is dumb and my heart goes out to the kids who now have to face the same thing I did.

Live music & Dancing ?

I’m from Ukraine and in my hometown (Odesa) we had a ton of restaurants where people would have dinner, there would be live music, and as people started to relax to post-dinner drinks, they would dance. I would say age group in these would usually be between 30 and infinity, people would bring kids too. I really miss such a vibe! Are there places like this in Stamford and surrounding towns?

Best places to live in Stamford as a new grad?

Hey guys, sorry if this is a very rehashed topic in this sub, but I’m moving to the Stamford/Norwalk area next month and am looking for recommendations for places to live. Preferably around $2k/month but I have the budget for more. I also have two friends that I’d like to live with (so a three bedroom, $2k rent each or $6k total), but would do less if people would recommend. Thanks for your help!

Prenatal / new parent groups in the area?

Our first baby is due this summer and although we have signed up for classes at Stamford hospital we are looking to see if there are any prenatal / new parent groups for pre- and post-birth. Trying to make some connections with folks who are having babies around the same time as us.

Stamford needs more than cheaper rent

As someone who grew up here, I often see people on here complaining about the cost of renting - needing roommates, experiencing rent hikes, etc.

However, I think a different approach is needed for affordability in Stamford. Huge apartment complexes are constantly being slapped up, but noticeably absent is the ability to actually buy condos. All are owned by large companies that make huge money milking rent out of longtime Stamford residents who would rather own property.

I haven’t heard anyone talking about this and quite frankly I am much more concerned about this as a trend in Stamford compared to rent prices as someone who wants to own a home here one day. I think that our politicians should only approve property development where a portion or all of those units are for sale individually rather than rent-only options. And the HOA fees are out of control as well - if you manage to buy something you pay rent to them instead. It all feels like a big scam and I don’t know if anyone else feels the same way.

Note the construction of the new "Burlington" Apartments (74 Broad St) vs Coastline down the street

We have two new prominent apartment buildings going up downtown right now, the new currently unnamed midrise building on the site of the Burlington Coast factory on corner of Summer/Broad and the highrise building down the street on Gay/Broad called "The Coastline".

Take a look at the two buildings mid construction when you get a chance and look at how different they are. And yes, while Coastline is definitely will be a much bigger building than Burlington, it is clear that one uses a superior construction technique to the other.

"Burlington" is the standard heavily cost-engineered all-wood construction that we saw at The Asher down the street (it is built by the same company). Get ready to hear your upstairs neighbor's footsteps all day, deal with mosiure issues and potentially increased fire risks.

"The Coastline" is clearly a far more substantial building with a massive concrete footing and steel framing for the floors above. I am confident that this building will be better to live in than Burlington and have less noise transmisison between units as the structure is much sturdier.

Ultimately these two buildings will probably rent for a similar price tag, so I think it's important for people to know what the buildings are like inside before signing a lease.

searching for apartment recs

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some apartment building recommendations! I'm moving to Stamford for a job in the downtown area and hoping to get a 1 bedroom/1 bathroom that's no more than $2200 a month. I might get flamed for the amount, but I'm trying to be realistic about budget and am hoping to get some helpful feedback/insight into expectations/any recommendations for apartment buildings that might fall into that range. Thank you in advance!

Starting over at 33 (F)

Hi all,

I guess im trying to meet people closer to my age group. Im basically starting over with my move to Stamford. Used to live in queens for a few years until a layoff which forced me to be stuck in my small ct town for like 3 years on and off small contract jobs until recently landing a new full time job.

I’m not really sure how to start over at this age to try and build a fulfilling life with new friends. It was much easier when I moved to the city at age 26. I’m now 33 and I’m not sure people want to make new friends at this age?

Ambivert but more on the introverted side
Moderately active - I like going to the gym and taking walks. I enjoy dance although I’m not a professional
I enjoy traveling alone or with 1 or 2 friends.
Love movie nights.
I feel a little old to be clubbing but I still do enjoy a light night out with the ladies
Cafes and brunch
In building a creative business on the side that I’m looking to scale. Interested in wealth building also
Ambitious but also pretty chill and laid back
own two cats :)

What are your recommendations? Where to start?

Does rye ridge deli get away with their prices?

I was looking at their lunch meats. A lot of them are Hormel which is a cheap brand. Learned a half pound of coleslaw which cost me $6 which is basically mayonnaise and cabbage. Because if my $60 meal with my wife could have easily been percent cheaper in any Italian deli and probably better
