the messy humanity nature of midnights and THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT

I think one element that tends to be overlooked about both midnights and TTPD is the messy raw humanity energy in them

midnights is the falling out of love, it's taylor going through the mix of emotion that her relationship with Joe alwyn wouldn't work out as she expected, we see her anxiety, denial, narcissism and finally, acceptance with you're losing me

but nothing last forever

and with TTPD, it's taylor going through the lowest point of her life emotionally with her breakups with matty and joe, and it's her most self-destructive album. (step aside reputation, the real goth female rage album is here/s) TTPD isn't just the matty album but it's play around taylor's life as a celebrity, the highs and the lows of it, her life looks cool until you get to have it

so yeah, you'll never get me to hate those two albums

According to Page Six Taylor Swift will perform at the Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony on June 11th

From the article:

"But sources tell Page Six Hollywood that Swift is also preparing for a different Big Apple summer soiree that will take place weeks before her wedding to the Kansas City Chiefs tight end. The “Love Story” artist is being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 11 and is planning to attend the ceremony with her family. Upping the ante, Swift will perform a song at the Broadway Marriott Marquis event as well, according to sources."

Alright, ik I'm gonna upset a lot of Maylors and theorists right now, but let's speak facts

Debunking a lot of the “about Matty” Taylor songs!

First, let me set up MY belief that...

They dated/had a situationship in 2014.

She broke up with/rejected him because of drug use

He was heartbroken.

She waited for some time, that being in between each breakup pre-Joe, for him to return and be fixed or whatever.

That didn't happen and she got with Joe.

She moved on from Matty.

They rekindle in 2022.

She and Joe start falling apart.

Matty is simply a distraction from her pain because he is everything Joe isn't (SHE IS NOT TRULY IN LOVE WITH HIM YET)

Jaylor break up.

Maylor get together.

Matty ghosts and leaves two months in.

  1. Dancing With Our Hands Tied

This can I see for Matty, but Joe was also 25 when he and Taylor linked, and they were also a private relationship.

  1. False God

About ignoring red flags, not infidelity

  1. Death By A Thousand Cuts

If Taylor ended her first relationship with Matty (or rejected him), it’s unlikely DBATC - a harsh breakup song - is about him.

  1. illicit affairs

Matty didn’t cheat, as far as we know.

  1. ivy

Again, a cheating song that’s probably about Calvin and Tom.

  1. gold rush

Could also easily be about Joe.

  1. right where you left me

Again, painful breakup song about cheating.

  1. champagne problems

Possible? Actually very possible if you think about it. But it could also be about Selena and Justin. I don’t think Matty proposed back then lol.

  1. Maroon

Maroon = red = Jake.

  1. Snow On The Beach

If you think she was falling for Matty, then sure, believe it’s about him, but that was unlikely (at that point), so prob about Joe.

  1. Question…?

A lot of evidence for this, but the Out Of The Woods sample screams Harry. Possibly about both/a cover-up song?

  1. Bejeweled

I don’t even think Bejeweled is about Joe because they hadn’t yet broken up and their breakup was extremely emotional for them (doesn’t really fit Bejeweled). I think either Calvin or Scott Borchetta.

  1. High Infidelity

Um, 100% about Calvin and Tom. April 29.

  1. Labyrinth and Glitch

Same reason as Snow On The Beach

  1. Hits Different

Definitely Joe. She couldn’t leave him.

  1. Anything on 1989

Too early.

  1. Anything on The Life of a Showgirl

Are we fr? No, Father Figure is definitely not about Travis being a PR boyfriend… No, Ruin The Friendship is not an allegory about Matty…

Thank you!

I’ve always said it, and I’ll say it again. SWEET NOTHING IS A SAD SONG!

w first time i heard it, i assumed everyone would agree it’s a sad song, and everyone i knew said it’s the sweetest thing ever😭

“All that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothing”- could mean he doesn’t ask her for anything he lets her be (which i’m guessing it’s the original meaning). but also, that he doesn’t want more of her (marriage/kids).

The verse explains a small cute scene, kinda underwhelming… “everyone’s up to something”= everyone is going further and “evolve”, “the end is coming”= theres bot lot of time left.
“it happens all the time”= nothings new, same small comments. he doesn’t hate her, he just doesn’t wish more of her [Which is close to what we know about their break up].
“You Should be doing more”- the whole bridge is about how he doesn’t expect her to do more or ask her too, which she likes- but it really could go either way.

So… does anyone else see it that way? am i being too depressed 💀? thx for reading🥹

Eldest Daughter - The Language We Loathe

I appreciate that some of the lines in “Eldest Daughter” rub people the wrong way. Specifically, “we all dressed up as wolves and we looked fire.”

The “bad bitch” / “savage” repetition bugged me at first too. But the more I’ve sat with the song, the more convinced I am that the discomfort is intentional. And honestly, I think it might be one of the best songs she’s ever written.

To me, “Eldest Daughter” is about the gap between feminine performance and real emotional experience, especially in the context of internet culture and modern womanhood.

I think the title operates more symbolically than literally. I identify deeply with almost everything she writes here, and I’m not first in birth order. “Eldest daughter” feels more like shorthand for women who feel responsible for holding everything together emotionally while simultaneously performing competence, polish, humor, beauty, resilience, and emotional self-sufficiency for everyone else.

This echoes themes she has touched on before in songs like “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” and “The Life of a Showgirl.”

>Now I make my money being pretty and witty
Thank you for the lovely bouquet

From the first stanza, the song situates us in a hyper-performative online world:

>Everybody's so punk on the internet
Everyone's unbothered 'til they're not
Every joke's just trolling and memes
Sad as it seems, apathy is hot
Everybody's cutthroat in the comments
Every single hot take is cold as ice
When you found me, I said I was busy
That was a lie

Right off the bat, we’re talking about performance and emotional distancing, especially online. Internet culture rewards irony, detachment, curated coolness, and performative indifference far more than sincerity or vulnerability.

This is why I really don’t think the kind of “cringe” slang throughout the song is accidental or bad songwriting:

“dressed up as wolves”
“looked fire”
“bad bitch”
“savage”

These phrases feel jarring because they don’t sound like the intimate, emotionally open writing style many of us associate with TS at her best. They sound intentionally online, performative, detached, hyper-self-aware. Curated, defensive identities.

So in this context, we go: huh? Why is she doing this?

These things sound like the kind of thing women post under each other’s mirror selfies online. Compliments of the highest order in the internet age. Celebrations of performative confidence, power, desirability, emotional hardness.

And I think that’s exactly the point.

We perform power, sexiness, intimidation, apathy, emotional hardness, and inaccessibility because contemporary culture increasingly seems to reward those traits more than it rewards openness, sincerity, tenderness, or vulnerability. Women are often encouraged, both by each other and by culture generally, to conflate emotional detachment with empowerment.

But underneath all of that, the emotional core of the song is beautifully earnest.

Beneath the detached persona is someone deeply loyal, sentimental, wounded, hopeful, and desperate to love and be loved securely.

The song contrasts the way most of us move through the world as children, openhearted and emotionally honest, with what happens after our vulnerability is exploited or punished. Eventually, we learn to perform hardness, control, irony, and emotional invulnerability as self-protection.

That’s why lines like:

>When I said I don't believe in marriage
That was a lie

and

>Ferris wheels, kisses and lilacs
And things I said were dumb
'Cause I thought that I'd never find that beautiful, beautiful life that
Shimmers that innocent light back
Like when we were young

land like a gut punch.

I think the song is ultimately admitting: I cared deeply the whole time. I always cared. I just had to pretend I didn’t because vulnerability gives people the power to hurt you. And I see you doing the same thing.

The idea that modern women care less than we do? That was the lie.

Taylor's singles with the General Public

Taylor is inarguably one of the very few monocultural things right now. But people tend to disregard her singles' successes as being only popular among her fanbase. There are a few songs that come to mind when someone mentions her name to a non-fan, being Blank Space, Shake It Off, Love Story, and You Belong With Me. How would you gauge her recent Lead/Follow up singles' successes and popularity with the General Public? Are they legitimate hits that even non-fans have heard playing out and about and/or on social media? Or are they really just popular due to her having the largest fanbase on the planet? Think Anti-Hero, Fortnight, The Fate Of Ophelia, Opalite, etc. Personally, I'd say Anti-Hero and Ophelia have been legitimate hits with mass appeal, and have even grown her fanbase, as I saw a lot of reels around Showgirl's release about "This song made me a Taylor Swift fan" with Ophelia. But I'd love to hear you guys' opinions!

Taylor Swift's recent streetstyle aesthetic

Taylor’s new streetstyle outfits all fall under an interesting aesthetic. Black and white colors with silk, satin and lace elements. Darker hair and bare heeled sandals also characterize most of these. Do you think this pattern could foreshadow the next era?
