Do you guys read Haddock as British?

In particular I’m addressing the Francophones among us here!

I’m a Brit, so I grew up with the English translations of the books and the 90s tv series where Haddock has a sort of Canadian-cum-Scottish (Nova Scotian(?)) accent. Of course, with the 2011 film, Serkis opted for a Scottish accent, and in regards to the 60s tv series my parents watched, Haddock again has a quasi Gaelic accent that I’d say is more Irish but has a Scottish lilt.

I’ve always read him to have a generic salty sea-dog accent, the kind of blend where you have to listen to someone for a while before determining if they’re West Country, Scottish or Irish (my granddad had one of those - he was West Country but sounded very like Michael Gambon’s Dumbledore).

I know that there’s the anecdote of Hergé’s wife referring to haddock as a “sad English/British fish” but as to how much weight that actually holds, I’m not sure.

There’s also people online who say that, in the translations of their own languages, Haddock’s accent is usually one of a sailor-heavy/coastal region of whichever their native country is.

So yeah, I’m curious as to how Haddock’s accent and nationality is handled in your own versions of the media? I’m not a naïve Anglocentric or anything but I was curious as to whether you think his vibe is your typical British sea-dog, or whether you associate him with your own nationality’s stereotype of “sailor”??

Belgium 2024 Soccer Jerseys

Watching Belgium play at the World Cup today, I was reminded of how in 2024 they wore Tintin inspired jerseys (kits).

How cool was that? I know it’s not their flag colour, but this should be the permanent 3rd uniform for them.

Not sure if this was ever shared in here back then.

I adore them.

Little DIY project of mine. Hope you like it :D

The led strips under the cotton are connected to an Arduino nano, so the light pulsates slightly 😁

Which character do you wish Hergé used more often in the series, and which one less often than they were?

The subject line is self explanatory: Which character would you nominate in each category, and why?

What is the story about the Tintin font?

I was wondering about the Tintin font: The typeface, in which the title of the albums is set. Is it connected to Hergé in some way or is it in broader use? The Blake and Mortimer comics also use the font, but those of course also have a connection to Tintin magazine. I would love to get to know more about the history of the font. For me, it's a defining aspect of the Tintin identity.
