Interview with Alan McCann (Switchbacks FC)

Had a great interview with Alan McCann, and I thought y’all might be interested in hearing it. It’s short, but I thought it was an insightful conversation. Check it out and if you have any questions or feedback let me know!

Attendance Figures

Where's a reliable source to get matchday attendance numbers for the division? Is it just a regional reporter thing or is there a universal source? The only luck I have while looking for them is Transfermarkt, but I'm not too confident in their numbers.

Cut by St. Louis City, USL2 Champion with Vermont, Now With Richmond

A really honest and insightful interview with Owen O'Malley, current player and leader for Richmond Kickers.

Owen’s journey has been anything but linear:

  • Released by MLS side St. Louis City
  • Became a USL2 legend with Vermont Green, leading them to the USL League Two Championship last season
  • Now making his mark in USL League One with Richmond

In this chat we talk about:

  • The emotional side of being cut by an MLS club
  • What winning the USL2 title meant to him
  • Transitioning back to pro ball with Richmond
  • Leadership, proving people wrong, and his outlook for 2026

It’s a great redemption/under-dog story with a lot of real talk about the realities of the American soccer pyramid.

The current standings tell an interesting story

Most of the same teams are in the top 8 as last season, with one hole because Tormenta — who finished 6th last year — is on “hiatus” this season. But there are two teams hanging out up there at the moment: Forward Madison and AC Boise. So who left the other hole?

The Cattanooga Red Wolves finished top 8 in 2025, but I was surprised to see are way down the list — however, they’ve only played four games so far, so it’s kind of understandable. Still, that’s the fewest games of any team, and I haven’t been able to find out why yet. Does anyone know what’s going on there?

Madison has only played five games, but that’s because there hasn’t been a home game yet since Breese Stevens field is getting new turf, and the first league home game won’t be until (update) the end of May.

I didn’t do the exact math, but the median amount of games I think is seven, and the average is slightly above six. Still plenty of time for some upsets.

It’s cool to see Boise near the top already, and Fort Wayne tied for 8th. Can’t wait to see what else the new expansion teams will bring to the (national) table!

Early Season Trips

Hey All!

It's looking to be a great season and we're on the road again! I posted my experiences from last season and want to encourage folks to travel too! For reference it's always me a fucking old, fat GenX and my son (early teen).

So far this season we've been to Sarasota and Columbus.

Went to Sarasota is a pretty relaxed and urban sprawled place. We flew into Tampa and spent a full day around Sarasota/Bradenton before the match. Lots of good stuff to do from beaches to art to botanical gardens. At the stadium everyone was great to us despite my f'up in getting seats behind the Sarasota bench. Roed was in the stands that match and was interacting with fans the whole time. It's awesome to see players hanging out with fans and making sure there's a connection. Great engagement and fun talking with them. They're setting up a great program. Overall, it was a great venue, easy parking, friendly fans, and cheap eats. I'd go back.

Went to Columbus Crew for our what turned out to be our final game in the open cup. Took a club bus up with The Scruffs (our fan base) and it was a blast. Had food before hand outside the stadium and there were lots of Crew there and all were supportive and had fun talking and banter. Stadium is pretty spectacular coming from our USL side. Fans in the stadium were great and happy to have us. The stadium staff didn't like us putting up flags and such on railings... maybe an MLS thing. Hope there are more chances for USL sides to take out MSL in the future. We traveled 5 hours and had as many folks as were in their supporter's section... definitely not massive.

We'll be at a bunch more this year: East Ridge Red Pups in Aug., Charlotte Independence in June, Fort Wayne and Union Omaha in Sept., and NY Cosmos in October.

Can't wait to meet y'all!

I really wanted to get to Portland, but v One Knox was your all's first home match and sold the fuck out so congrats to you darlings (hope Wada's recovery is quick, he's a badass). Spokane might still happen, we'll see. Madison revisit is going to have to wait till next year.
