I'm putting this '79 242GT back on the road after it sat in a barn for 10 years.

I found this Canadian (Southern Ontario) 1979 242GT about 30 minutes from me. The owner had it in a barn where a few racoons and maybe a skunk called it home for a number of years. So the interior was pretty dirty, but not destroyed. Unfortunately it was removed from the barn before I saw it, since someone looked at it before me.

I made a deal with the guy that also included 2 140s that I didn't want/need(my friend took them) and removed all three cars from the properties.

I'm doing a series on YouTube if you want to check it out. There aren't too many of these left in Canada, especially original Ontario cars! It will be a driver, not a full restoration, fixing holes in the body, keeping it mostly stock, rubber bushings, all new suspension/brake, its getting a modern B230FT I had rebuilt years ago, and probably megasquirt to just get it going(easier than running LH 2.4 harness or something).

Volvo 245 Manual Swap Opinions

I have 79 non-Turbo 245 automatic. I recently picked up an m47 transmission with driveshaft and all other relevant mechanical bits for a swap. This is an eventual project, but I want to hear from anyone who has done this or had it done.

How feasible is it to do yourself with ramps in a driveway? What was the most difficult part and are there any guides you might recommend.

Are these as rare as I’m hearing?

I’m hearing that these 240 saloon tail light connectors are like gold dust, does anyone know where to source please?

24 years sitting outside, Is it worth it to restore or part it out?

Recently picked up this 1984 240 intercooler turbo for $900 USD in southern Wisconsin and need advice on whats the better option. The car was last tagged in ‘02 and has sat since then because the last owner wanted a car with better mpg. 24 years later I bought it as my first project car. Ive had some friends tell me to restore it and some tell me to part it out. What do you folks think? It will definitely need a lot of bodywork. Thank you for any advice

CR 702 help volvo 240

Hi everyone! I recently bought an old car stereo for my 1993 Volvo 240 — a Volvo CR-702.

I wanted to test whether it works at home, so I spent several hours trying to find information about the wiring and what each wire is for. Unfortunately, I only found diagrams for versions that have a connector, while mine simply has wires coming directly out of the radio.

I believe these wires are original from the factory and that nobody has modified them, since the soldering looks factory-made.

Could someone please help me identify which wire goes where — speakers, antenna, and power?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

BNE coilovers?

Anyone have experience with bne coilovers? previous owner put these on in the front they seem pretty sweet, but the car is stiff as a board going over bumps. I can’t find much info, do I just need to buy a softer spring? Also the car is much too low in the front, will bringing the gold piece up raise the car?
Thank you for any help and forgive me being naive. 🤦‍♂️

Question about reinstalling front strut: what's the trick?

Hi,

I am replacing the cartridges in the front struts of my 1990 240.

The passenger side is done.

I am having a problem with the driver's side though. I got the new cartridge installed properly in the strut housing, and I am at the point of rotating the assembly up into place. The problem: the strut keeps hanging up on the third bolt stud in the strut bearing. It won't go in the tower. I have tried for hours.

I was able to jiggle the passenger side around and then lift it into place for bolting with a hydraulic jack; but that method just isn't working on the driver's side. I can't understand it, everythng seems identical side to side.

is there a known "trick" that folks here can share? Or, failing that... would it be viable to unbolt the 3 bolts holding the ball joint to the control arm, attach the strut up above in the tower, and then re-attach the ball joint below? Or is that opening a new can of worms?

Advice appreciated...

Tips for doing the head gasket?

Honestly I’m not too worried about doing it and am comfortable with the procedures, just want to know if anyone has some useful tips that may help with the process, and maybe save some headache. As far as tools go, I am good, only thing I don’t have is a machinist edge to check the deck of the head and block. The head gasket isn’t blown yet, this is more of a preventative measure, so I am not too worried about the head being warped, but is it necessary for me to get one? Other than that, any other little tips would be great. I made sure to get new intake, exhaust manifold gaskets, and a new valve cover gasket. Oh, and I’ve already done the timing belt, and front seals, as well as the rear cam seal/plug so I will not have to do those while the head is off which is nice. So I pretty much only have to tackle the head gasket, as the other things mentioned have already been done.

help in Brooklyn

Hey hello, my 89’ 240 DL is currently not running after sputtering out and no longer starting (it cranks).

I’ve gone over the fuse box (OG ceramics), replaced the pump relay, installed new plugs/rotor/cap/wires/ignition coil; i have a fuel pump kit (in-take, main, and filter) ready to install next but hoping maybe a fellow has a little time to help out a neighbor and take a look to see whats going on, My multimeter reads everything kosher so I cant for the life of me figure which way to go with this outside of resorting in a trip over to Lorenzutti; let me know!

Getting road trip ready

I bought my first 240 last weekend after getting advice from you guys, thank you! Besides some minor oil leaks and inner tie rod play, my mechanic gave her a clean bill of health.

I’m planning a 2500km coastal road trip for mid September, and will give her a service and change all fluids beforehand.

I’ve got a comprehensive breakdown policy that covers a tow for up to 300km in case of the worst, but expecting a rural mechanic to keep 1989 Volvo spares is a pipe dream.

If you were planning this trip, what would your must have spare parts be to keep onboard? Any other prep tips would be appreciated. Cheers!

Tune up going sideways. 1988 240 sedan

So, I began doing a tune up. Things were going smoothly until I came to the distributor cap and rotor. The cap is fine, however I can't get the rotor out. I didn't exactly want to brute force it off. Without consulting people who have done this more then I. This is my first Volvo. My first time doing a tune up of any kind solo. So any and all suggestions are appreciated. Thank you all and have a great day.

What are modernization recommendations to improve fuel economy?

I plan on faulting my 244, but I’d like to get the most fuel efficiency out of this motor. What are some things you guys have done that you’ve seen to make an improvement in MPG?

1990 240 No crank mystery.

Hey y'all, been chasing a gremlin of sorts with my 1990 240. A while back I ran into a no crank issue, but the starter is fine so I installed a push button start as a temporary fix. It cranks and runs just fine.

Finally getting around to fixing it, I thought it might be the ignition switch, so I just spent about 3 days swapping that with an OEM replacement. Still no crank. Thought it might be the neutral safety switch, so I jumped the cables but still nothing. Tested with a multimeter, I'm getting no power to the blue/yellow wire that goes to the starter. Only getting 2.5V at the smaller spade on the alternator with key in II position. All the fuses look good including 25A under the hood. Battery and terminals are essentially brand new. Just curious if anyone's run into a similar problem, or any suggestions on what to check next? Feeling stumped.

Cabin heater not doing its job

Red line is hot and blue line is not. The slider is actuating the valve inside.

Could there be air or another blockage in the system? How much of a pain in the arse will it be?

Any advice is welcome, thanks in advance.
