Brick(2005): give me a classic style film noir drug mystery film with an amazing cast and great music… but set it in a high school in SoCal

Before Knives Out and Looper, Rian Johnson made BRICK. Written like a classic film noir down to the dialogue, but shot with super stylized quick cuts and packing one of my favorite film scores EVER.

What makes it weird? The setting turns the whole film noir thing on its side, it’s about high school kids, it’s about those old dudes who hang out with them and still live in their mom’s basement, it’s about cliques and social outcasts. The dialogue written so well in the style of classic detective films, and when it clashes with the setting it makes for a weirdly compelling piece of art that imo Johnson has never been able to top.

I recommend this one 100% to anyone who went to high school in the early to mid 2000’s, especially if you grew up in Southern California, it will feel strangely personal.

The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989)

Sort of a mix between a movie and a filmed stage play. If this movie is up your alley, I think there are very few faults you will find in it. Every actor is on point, the music, sets, camera work are all remarkable. But you need to really let go how you feel a movie should look and sound. I think its an incredible piece of art.

Drop Dead Gorgeous: satire/mockumentary about the murderous side of the pageant scene. Funny, dark as hell, and best of it’s kind.

Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999):
Murders. Minnesota accents. Denise Richards.
Late 90’s black comedy/satire about a small town taken over with pageant fever.
This one doesn’t take itself seriously at all, it’s great for a laugh, it’s honestly BIZARRE, offensive as hell, and unapologetically weird. Great performances from young Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adam’s, Kirstie Alley, and even a small role for the GOAT Brittany Murphy(RIP QUEEN)

It’s raunchy in the right ways, it’s Americana at its core and it’s a classic. Did I mention Denise Richards as a gun obsessed Christian pageant girl?

Digger (2026)

I'm only making this post because it's a lot more unique and different than what you'd expect it to be based on the trailer (seemed like a Coen Brothers-esque thing...which is some of it but the scope is way bigger).

Go see that shit. A lot of the critics shitting on it are fucking dumb. In my opinion. At a minimum, it is a very weird ass movie structurally and tonally and people in this group will love it. Just saw it today. I don't think explaining what it's fully about and the multiple levels of meta that it exists inside would ruin it for anyone but I'm not gonna spoil any of that.

I'll just say that it's one of the best weird movies I've seen that's come out in the last few years. This is a hard film to market and I do think the director and the studio shit the bed there (word has come out the marketing for the trailers was in large part the directors idea because it's a huge misdirect from what the film really is and he wanted it to throw people off expectations wise versus what it actually is when you see it) but even if they had chosen to get into all the twists and meta levels it is compromised of it would still be a convoluted sell marketing wise.

It's by the guy that did Bird Man and it definitely has a vibe like that movie. If that helps. Also, Tom Cruise is fucking incredible in it. Les Grossman vibes but going even further. John Goodman is goddamn incredible here and drives the movie just as much as Tom does. Really good ensemble cast honestly.

Videodrome (1983)

Surreal (shocking, I know) and one of my favorite Cronenberg films. eXistenZ feels like a logical continuation of Videodrome, taking those exact same themes and pushing them even further

Tank Girl

A girl is among the few survivors of a dystopian Earth. Riding a war tank, she fights against the tyranny of a mega-corporation that dominates the world's remaining potable water supply

Classic 90s properly weird comic adaptation.

The Blasphemous Cinema of Natali Cohen Vaxberg: 10-Year Total State Boycott Over Radical Atheist & Anti-Religious Satire

This is her short film, "Purity"—a grotesque dark comedy/satire:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RluevjPVyTk&t=684s

What happened to little Purity when she found out about an imaginary creature called God? And what did it make her do on Yom Kippur?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE [NEWS]

Israeli avant-garde dissident filmmaker Natali Cohen Vaxberg is facing a massive, decade-long total institutional blacklist due to her brutal political and anti-religious satire.

Strictly refusing to align with nationalist hysteria, Vaxberg utilizes extreme aesthetic discomfort and pitch-black absurdist comedy to dismantle the sanctity of religious propaganda, state bureaucracy, and institutional dogma. Following a series of highly controversial performance art pieces targeting the core myths of the local establishment, she was subjected to high-profile criminal police investigations, house arrests, and an absolute embargo from all state funding and public cinema venues.

Her subversive mini-feature film, "Tohar" (Purity), stands as a direct, uncompromised cinematic assault against systemic religious conditioning and institutional fanaticism. The film details the psychological abuse of religious brainwashing, tracking the brutal, clinical process of forcing a human mind into absolute theological conformity. It exposes how religious authority utilizes institutional violence, ritualistic guilt, and systematic trauma to scrub away individual free thought under the guise of spiritual purification.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RluevjPVyTk&t=684s

SPUN: visually inventive, uncomfortably accurate, stylistically perfect

I never get tired of this film. The editing is 💯 and so well done, I think it’s honestly the star of the film because it makes you FEEL like you’re riding(or chasing) the same high that the characters are.

Why it’s weird: a drug fueled adventure in the valley with a selection of weirdos, all addicted but all with their own messed up personalities and flaws. There are no good people in this film. Everyone sucks. But they’re all deliciously compelling. The filmmaking itself is very inventive and make s great use of its low budget.

Like the best weird movies it has a REALLY GOOD SOUNDTRACK.

And lastly, the cast is phenomenal. Every role is brilliantly cast down to the cameos from people like Rob Halferd and Debbie Harry.

I cannot recommend this one enough.

Heads up. TONS of drug use and sexual content/conversation if that’s something that you are trying to avoid.

Baxter

Definitely a weird ass movie, told for the most part from the perspective of a bull terrier passed off, at first, to an old widow. He thinks he thrives with discipline and order, and through murder, both attempted and successful, he manages to find his way to a stern disciplinarian owner in a Hitler-idolizing young man.

Surprisingly thoughtful movie for something that can be summed up as being 'about a killer dog.'

Trivia: The dog actors' name was Chimbot.

Castration Movie Anthology II. The Best of Both Worlds

I love Louise Weard and part 2 of this anthology is nothing like I have ever seen before. Best to go in blind and you don't have to see part 1 before to watch it but I highly recommend it. If you are looking for something that is totally original, totally weird, and totally fucking great art, check it out. This is in my top 10 of all time.
