Before Knives Out and Looper, Rian Johnson made BRICK. Written like a classic film noir down to the dialogue, but shot with super stylized quick cuts and packing one of my favorite film scores EVER.
What makes it weird? The setting turns the whole film noir thing on its side, it’s about high school kids, it’s about those old dudes who hang out with them and still live in their mom’s basement, it’s about cliques and social outcasts. The dialogue written so well in the style of classic detective films, and when it clashes with the setting it makes for a weirdly compelling piece of art that imo Johnson has never been able to top.
I recommend this one 100% to anyone who went to high school in the early to mid 2000’s, especially if you grew up in Southern California, it will feel strangely personal.
Hey Yall! My Penny Lane is doing a lot better. She had a seizure two Fridays ago and spent the day in the hospital and now she’s medicated and she’s doing a lot better. Included some pics of her. Wanted to say thank you to you all who reached out, all those who commented, and to the person who sent us the free bark box, she’s been loving it.
We racked up quite the medical bill, and we are doing our best to recoup before things get crazy hectic during the slow months for work. I hope this is okay to post here, I’m going to be doing a fund raiser in the next couple of days. Some of you know my work and what I do and some of you may not. I’m going to be making these gift sets and some other fun sets you can’t find anywhere else and offering them at a lower rate than usual so we can try and get my girl the neurologist appointment she needs and pay off the debt we got from the animal hospital last week. Feel free to DM me or contact me through my insta if you guys have questions or requests or if you know a dog neurologist in SoCal, all my contact info is in my bio.

Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999):
Murders. Minnesota accents. Denise Richards.
Late 90’s black comedy/satire about a small town taken over with pageant fever.
This one doesn’t take itself seriously at all, it’s great for a laugh, it’s honestly BIZARRE, offensive as hell, and unapologetically weird. Great performances from young Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adam’s, Kirstie Alley, and even a small role for the GOAT Brittany Murphy(RIP QUEEN)
It’s raunchy in the right ways, it’s Americana at its core and it’s a classic. Did I mention Denise Richards as a gun obsessed Christian pageant girl?
I never get tired of this film. The editing is 💯 and so well done, I think it’s honestly the star of the film because it makes you FEEL like you’re riding(or chasing) the same high that the characters are.
Why it’s weird: a drug fueled adventure in the valley with a selection of weirdos, all addicted but all with their own messed up personalities and flaws. There are no good people in this film. Everyone sucks. But they’re all deliciously compelling. The filmmaking itself is very inventive and make s great use of its low budget.
Like the best weird movies it has a REALLY GOOD SOUNDTRACK.
And lastly, the cast is phenomenal. Every role is brilliantly cast down to the cameos from people like Rob Halferd and Debbie Harry.
I cannot recommend this one enough.
Heads up. TONS of drug use and sexual content/conversation if that’s something that you are trying to avoid.
This is a soft type strange one.
Why it’s weird: imagine an old west story about a stranger who meets the lawman’s daughter… now set it in Southern California in the 2000’s but shoot it with the style and pacing of a western romance.
Now turn that in its head and forget anything you expected.
It’s not a mind blowing film, but it will surprise you. It’s kinda this and kinda that but all the performances are great. Edward Norton and David Morse are great foils to each other, Evan Rachel Wood is perfect as always. Hell there’s even a Culkin in there for those that require it for the weird scale.
Go in blind, enjoy it.
dark comedy/fantasy
Heaven? Hell? There's a special place for people who take their own lives in this oddly quirky film about where you go after death if you choose a certain way out. it's got a great cast and an amazing soundtrack(as the best weird movies do). Obviously warnings for self harm, but this one is a really special one for me. Melancholy but full of charm.
In an alternate Earth everyone is born with a frequency that is measured to tell you how lucky or successful you will be in life. It starts as a quirky sci fi and turns into a superbly unique loook at fate and love and free will.
It’s a sci fi romance puzzler, low budget but they definitely know how to use it. Go in blind and don’t look up the ending. One of my favorites.
Not to be confused with Frequency, the Jim Cavizel/Denbis Quaid movie.

Oookay sub I wanted to offer something more fun today since my last few were kinda downers. Someone is getting married so the boys are having a bachelor party. This one is bizarre and the turns twist so fast and so far, takes you places you don’t expect. It is a dark comedy so you can watch it as more of a palette cleanser to some of the other stuff I recommend but girl, just don’t watch it with your parents or with your kids because it gets messy. Slater and Diaz both crank it to 11 and you won’t see where it’s going until it’s too late!!1
This one is hard to spoil because there’s a lot going on and super easy to recommend. A VR game creator is on the run after an unexpected attack at a pre launch event of her newest VR game. This is not the cheesy type of LAWNMOWER MAN / VIRTUOSITY vr movie. It’s really well executed and it is a perfect candidate for this sub. Young Jude Law and Jennifer Jason Leigh with appearances from a young Chris Eccleston and even WILLEM DAFOE. This one is by definition a weird ass movie and I’m sure if you haven’t already seen it, you guys will dig jt.
some of you will say posting anything by Gregg Araki is cheating, and I'll sort of agree with that, but for those who haven't seen it. It's a coming of age story built on a shaky foundation of abuse and pain, and not one that should be entered lightly. A very intense film based on a novel(same name) about two boys who grow up leading parallel but different lives after they crossed passed as kids.
Why it's weird, big spoilers follow: >!One of the main characters thinks he was abducted by aliens as a kid. !< Further Spoilers: >!He's misremembering being abused by both his baseball coach and the other boy(JGL's character)!<
worth a watch if you are into films about aliens, memories, films with gritty realism, early 2000's indie film vibes.
content warnings for >!sexual abuse, rape, drug use, violence!<
It’s hard to describe this one without going into spoiler territory. All I’ll say is it starts as a sort of meeting of a women’s club and very quickly evolved into one of the most disturbing unsettling films I’ve ever seen. Rarely do I have to pause a film. I had to watch this over two nights because the subject matter is intense. I strongly recommend going in blind.
