PLAIN DEALER

I'm playing Janet next and I got a copy of the Cleveland Plain Dealer announcing Nixon's resignation.

August 9th, 1974.

It's not the date of Janet's actual newspaper--October 7th, 1974, but the fan theory is that Brad recorded that radio broadcast.

These headlines fit with the radio in the driving scene.

Your favorite obscure, glossed over, or seldom discussed parts of the film?

Hello fellow unconventional conventionists. I know most of us love rhps front to back and have seen it many times over. I haven't watched the movie in a little while but I've been thinking about different funny scenes that are putting me in the mood to watch soon. We all love the scenes with songs, Franks big entrance, and funny moments like "Janet, Mr. Scott, Janet, Brad, Rocky" but I'd love to know some of the community's favorite more obscure less discussed moments from this film. Funny, sad, intriguing, etc.

I'm absolutely tickled every time during the scene where Brad and Janet are being introduced to Frank. He mocks them and calls Brad a "perfect specimen of manhood" to which one of the Transylvanians pulls out a monocle as Brad cuts an eye and adjusts his robe.

Also the dinner scene where Frank is already flustered, trying to put everything behind him for the moment and sing happy birthday to his adulterous Rocky. He starts singing so sweetly and is immediately pissed when everyone joins in so he sits abruptly and hits them with an irritated "shall we?" Makes me crack up every single time!

Please post some of your favorite little moments so when I watch I have fun stuff to look for or think about 💋

Darkness has Conquered

Was listening to the soundtrack again recently, and I was thinking about how downbeat this story concludes, like a reality check on multiple levels. In his commentary on the original DVD, Richard O’Brien talks about how a production of the Brecht play the Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui had been an influence on his take of the themes visited here at the time of the musical’s composition in the early 1970s. in a nutshell this is Brecht’s 1941 play which is an allegory about the rise of Hitler through corruption and violence, how forces of fascistic control sought to suppress freedom on all levels. Of course the Nazi’s designation of any works of art or literature labeled ‘decadent’ and censored is easily brought to mind in the context of a musical that is at once meant to describe sexual liberation, especially that which would be considered deviant or illicit.
So when in the Reprise we hear “Darkness has conquered Brad and Janet”, not long after the paean to Super Heroes, a bittersweet ode of disillusionment, is O’Brien suggesting that this is what’s in store for those struggling to live in sexual freedom, that the forces of Darkness in the form of societal and political oppression will conquer (for now) those looking to express themselves with abandon, or is it a cautionary tale that “excess” is a trap of decadence that is always doomed to fail? Which seems to me both ironic and fairly downbeat in the context of this musical especially. Lost in time, space, and meaning.

50th Anniversary Steelbook in UHD 4K

Just got this today, anyone have thoughts about it if they have checked it out already? Also comes with Blu Ray and digital code. The bonus feature appears to be the same commentary by O’Brien and Quinn that appeared on the original DVD release, also several other items like alternate version with B/W opening etc.

Questions about the 1993 TV recording with audience participation? Any 90s NJ based RHPS fans here?

I have been watching this recording a lot recently and notice that instead of saying slut when Janet is mentioned, the audience say 'Weissss'. I think it was taped in New Jersey (at least based on this being where the audience say it is still a crime to give yourself over to pleasure).

I know that callbacks are very regional but this is interesting to me since now Asshole and Slut are seen as THE main callbacks - most shows I go to now will teach the audience these before the show starts. When/where did shouting Slut instead become so popular? Are NJ based folk still shouting Weiss instead of slut? Was this a substitution just for the TV recording?

I would also be interested if anybody has any more information about this recording, would love to reach somebody that was there!!

Looking for Bluray that includes superheroes at the end

Title is pretty straight forward. I only have RHPS on tape and the ones I have don't include Superheroes except for post movie special features. Looking to add a bluray to my collection that has Superheroes in the actual movie and not just a deleted scene. I was looking at the 50th Anniversary steelbook but cant tell if it's on there.

Shadowcast question. Trust me — the insecurity is real.

I’m a 68-year-old guy, and I’m thinking about trying out for our local RHPS shadowcast.

I’m old enough to have watched Rocky Horror with my girlfriend freshman year at Texas, back when it was just a weird movie and not the whole cult thing it became later. So now I’m wondering if I’m too old for this, or if I should just go for it.

Am I being ridiculous, or is this totally fine?

Is it fair to say RHPS is both a celebration and a warning against Liberation?

I was having the classic "is Rocky Horror transphobic" debate with one of my friends, and it lead to us discussing the ending. They argued that the film is a cautionary tale because it leaves Brad and Janet emotionally scarred from being liberated by Frank-N-Furter. I always thought the line "darkness has conquered Brad and Janet" was supposed to say that they are traumatized after watching Frank, Columbia, and Rocky being killed right in front of them, and that they won't be able to go back to their old selves now that they have tasted "forbidden fruit". I essentially see Frank-N-Furter as being a tragic figure who is essentially a glam rock Frankenstein. He simply wanted to be accepted, but it drove him too far to the point of harming others which is why he is killed.

I personally think that the story is both a celebration and a warning, but how would I explain it to them?

PLEASE steal this image and post when relevant. There's a rise in AI usage everywhere but it has no place in the RHPS community, an environment built on DIY, creativity, artistry, and outlandish decisions made by humans!

Well, i did something..

I found that old script online a long time ago, and I remember reading it and wishing it was real. I’ve always loved Rocky Horror — it’s one of my favorite musicals of all time. I’ve always wondered what a sequel would look like, and now, with today’s technology, we can finally hear a version of O’Brien’s vision and what he may have intended.

The script itself doesn’t have a lot of substance when it comes to the music. There are a few songs, but most of it is just notes and ideas describing what the songs could sound like. I went back and read the script again recently… and honestly, it’s a mess. But I think I managed to carve out a cohesive story that still stays true to what O’Brien originally wrote.

I’m just a fan, but I ended up putting together a fan-made soundtrack that actually turned out pretty good. Some of the songs simply weren’t there, so I had to dig through the script and create new ones to bridge the gaps between the material he already wrote.

Let me know what you think. It’s on Suno for now, but I’ll probably move it to a web app soon.

And again, this is just modern-day fan fiction lol. I’m not making any money from this. I did it purely for fun because I love the world and the characters. I’ve spent sooo many hours of time and my own money putting this together, so please be kind.

There’s more coming, this is just what I have so far. I would love help if you’re interested.

Here’s the link

Here is the script I used, and hey this might be fan fiction on its own, but my research says it’s legit and written by O’Brien.

My favorite songs so far are

Back to the Dirt
I’m Mother
And Sweets on the Street. “I also changed Sunny’s last name to sweet”

Here is the script I used.

Eddie: Ex-Delivery Boy? or Rocker?

I’ve seen people claim he was a delivery boy who came to the castle, and that’s how he came to meet Frank. But… delivering what? I did look through the stage show script a bit and it has him coming out of a coca cola machine instead of a freezer. Did he deliver sodas…? Is this addressed more in the stage show, and I just skimmed too fast?

Even so, why did he have a saxophone with him? Or did Frank just have one at the castle? In “Hot Patootie”, he says “a saxophone was blowin’ on a rock-n-roll show”, but he doesn’t say that HE was blowin it. Or was it playing on the radio?

So… Was he a rock star, or at least in a band? If not, then how did Columbia get a giant poster and a guitar with his face on it? Did she have that custom made?

I’ve been considering writing a fanfic prequel/midquel but I have so many questions. This is the main one that’s holding me up. Why is he titled “ex-delivery boy”? Is he “ex” because he’s now frozen in the freezer? Or because he hit the big time?
